Happiness is not the accomplishment of desires

We are dealing with something simple, but at the same time, deeply challenging. We are dealing with you about the art of Happiness. Satsang is this, and It represents the abandonment of the illusion of the sense of the "person" present. It is important that you remember that life happens without "you" and those thoughts, feelings, all of that is part of life, as well as actions, which are apparently the result of these thoughts and feelings.

What we are saying is that it is not a matter of trying to cooperate with life or trying to create the conditions for happiness, hoping everything to be auspicious. Things do not always have to be perfect as you expect them to be. The perfection you expected in what happens is only a belief, a projection of desire. You cannot expect anything from life, because "expecting" means creating an expectation to be miserable.

Happiness is neither the accomplishment of desires nor the fulfillment of expectations. Happiness is Being! Life is what it is, and that is Being. There is not the sense of "anyone" in Being. I did not say, "to be anything", "to be happy"... Being is Happiness, but it is not being happy! The sense of "person" is always miserable, no matter what it accomplishes in life, because this accomplishment is still part of its misery. You cannot look at the Truth as a mall, where you go shopping and there you get everything you want… you eat in the food court, shop in the clothing stores, buy toys and so on... And now you are "happy"!

Do not look at life as a mall. It does not have what you want, because your desire is miserable and life does not know misery. Everybody seeks Happiness, but they confuse Truth, Life, with a great market where they can get everything they want.

It is not getting what you want that you will be happy, but exactly the opposite: it is no longer desiring, abandoning the sense of "someone" present who desires - this "someone" you believe to be and always misses something: family , success, health, clothing, friendships... This sense of lack is only possible when the sense of the "I" is present, and that is to be miserable.

In Satsang, we are dealing with something simple and profound. Simple because it is easy to get close to it by the word; profound because we have to investigate deeply the illusory nature of this egoic mind, this sense of the “I”. In Satsang, your thoughts, feelings, emotions and all forms of beliefs - at whatever level they appear, inside your head or what you call the "heart" - are discarded. None of this is so important to Be.
To be something, you need to have things, and that makes you a miserable “person”, because there is always fear, dependence, anxiety, worry and suffering. To Be, however, the end of desire is what matters, as well as about the end of ambition, expectation, the search for something, the pursuit of something.

Therefore, Realization is not "accomplishment". Realization is to be here, without future, without expectations, without desires. Then, Happiness reveals itself with the Truth, and definitely it is not a market, where you get everything you want. It is present in Meditation, which is to assume the Truth about yourself; it is to live without the past and the future; it is to have the heart and the mind completely free. So, emotions, thoughts, feelings and physical sensations are simple experiences without "someone" inside fantasizing, imagining and calculating attached to this movement.

Thus, in Satsang, we discover the beauty of living free from the "person" and, of course, from the conflicts it produces by reason of its desires, ambitions and fears. So, Life is what it is! It is not there as a market waiting for you. There is neither separation nor distance between Being and Life... That is Completeness, Wholeness, Happiness.

The question that arises is: "How do I keep going to work, making money, paying bills, taking care of kids and family?" The answer to that question is: there is not "you"! This is the movement of Life! This goes very well without "you" - without anxiety, expectation, desire and, of course, without fear.

Give yourself total Freedom! Give yourself total Peace, total Intelligence, total Truth and total Love! Give yourself the absence of "yourself". This is Realization, but it is not the realization of "anyone" ... It is only Realization! No one realizes [the Self], but the Realization is possible. This is Enlightenment! No one attain enlightenment, but Enlightenment is possible when "you" are not [present], when "what it is" is What it Is! That is all!

What is the origin of every human’s conflict and suffering?

At this point, you have the clear sense of listening to this speech. What you do not question is whether listening to this speech is actually happening to someone. Therefore, the common belief is that there is an entity present in this experience of listening. This phenomenon of listening is nothing more than a physical phenomenon. The sound waves reach the tympanum and produce information to the brain, a message that interprets in the form of words or thoughts. However, this phenomenon of listening is only a phenomenon of Consciousness, and this does not make real the existence of someone present in that listening. It is only a physical phenomenon.

However, the central idea is, "I am present," "I listen," "I agree," or "I disagree with what I am listening," "he is right," or "he is wrong." Another thought also arises saying, "this speech is very interesting." However, the central idea is that all this comes from you, that there is someone present in this experience of listening. That is, what you are doing in this meeting tonight is not to question the truth of the experience, but the truth of the existence of someone present in it. All conflict, every human’s suffering, is basically based on the illusion that there is an entity present in the experience, whether in the experience of speaking, listening, thinking, feeling, doing or not doing anything.

This idea of being present, this idea of the “I,” of “me,” of ego-consciousness, is a conditioning that you have received since childhood, but this does not exist. "Your" consciousness is not particular to this organism, to that body. Therefore, this phenomenon of hearing is not a particular phenomenon, but a phenomenon of Consciousness, in Consciousness, by Consciousness and for Consciousness. What I am saying, in other words, is that there is neither "I" here speaking nor "you" there listening; it is just one movement, a single phenomenon. There is only one Presence making this apparition possible.

It is like a wave in the ocean... This ocean is Consciousness and this little wave is this phenomenon. There is no separation between the wave and the ocean, between the phenomenon and where it happens, appears, or - going a little further - seems to appear, seems to happen, because, in reality, your mind is this phenomenon, this apparition.

So, Satsang is only an invitation to investigate the reality of this "you" before life, before existence. Your True Nature is Consciousness; it is not a personal thing. It does not have a "person" present; it has only the appearance of this body-mind phenomenon (sensations, thoughts, emotions, perceptions). The "person" is an illusion, that is, the personal identity with a name, a form and a history is an illusion. This is the beauty of Satsang (Sanskrit word meaning "encounter with What is," "encounter with Reality, with Truth"). This deconstruction or the collapse of this illusion of an “I” is something possible before a real work, a true work.

Your only real Freedom, as Consciousness, is Being, and Being is Happiness! Consciousness is this absolute Intelligence, not verbal, not intellectual, not conceptual. This Consciousness, this absolute Intelligence, is beyond duality, beyond this sense of good and bad, cause and effect, goodness and badness... Consciousness is beyond this "I and the world," this duality of an experimenter present in the experience of the world as if the world were the experience of "someone," of this "me," of this "I,” "of this "person." Therefore, a true approach, which is this face-to-face approach in Satsang, brings this Awakening, revealing so this profound Silence, this deep Consciousness, this profound Reality.

Thus, Being is Consciousness, which is Happiness! That is the nature of Realization! To the Jnani, the one who attained awakening, who is in his Being, as Consciousness, Happiness, there is no conflict, fear and suffering. You were born for It - for Happiness, for Consciousness, for Being! However, as soon as this body-mind appears in this scenario [birth], you are overcome by this conditioning, by that belief, this illusion, by this model, this pattern of thinking, feeling. It is necessary to go beyond this conditioning, beyond this duality. You have to assume the Truth about yourself.

This constant search for peace, love, happiness, and freedom on the outside, in things, in people, in places, it is this illusion that ends. That is when the illusion of the identification with the body ends - identification with this idea of being a boy or a girl, man or woman, a young man or a young woman, an old man or an old woman... Then, when that is over, the Truth reveals Itself.

The Truth is this Supreme Freedom, this Love, this Supreme Happiness, which is possible in this Consciousness, which is absolute Intelligence, which is Being! Thus, the Truth reveals Itself in this Being, which is Consciousness, Happiness, Freedom, Love... It reveals itself in this Happiness, which is Consciousness, Freedom. Notice that we are talking about Being-Consciousness-Happiness, a single Presence, the Presence of your Being, your True Nature, which is this Silence, this Grace, which is another word for Beauty, Love, Truth.

After all, who is the one who suffers? Once you identify with the mind, suffering is present. In Satsang, you are invited to go beyond the illusion of the “I,” of separateness, of duality, of suffering. In fact, it is not the body that suffers; the body has pains. Suffering is something psychological, something from this sense of the "I," the mind. You have been getting confused with the body, and it is in the mind that you get confused with it.

The seeker is blind

We have something to investigate very paradoxical in this meeting. I have observed that when people come to Satsang, their intention is to get rid of suffering, which may seem quite natural at first. When they arrive at this meeting, they hear that the cause of suffering is the illusion of a present entity. Then, when they discover that the cause of suffering is the illusion of a present entity, this so-called "I", the ego, they put into their heads that now it is necessary to get rid of this "I," this ego. That is what I have observed. It seems reasonable that you now seek this liberation. So, you want to free yourself from the ego since it is the cause of suffering.

And here we face a very delicate subject: you cannot free yourself from the ego! You want to free yourself from the ego because you are suffering, but this suffering is the ego itself, and now it wishes to get rid of itself. That is why the subject of Liberation, or Realization, or Enlightenment is a very delicate subject.

Usually, the person approaches this in a personal way, and then, the person wants to get rid of the "person", the ego wants to get rid of the ego with the dualistic mind, with the sense of the present duality. The point here is: all this movement only strengthens the sense of a present entity. This is not the answer, this is not the path. That is why you can spend your whole life listening to speeches, gathering information about It, and also having experiences because of some meditation practice. However, in the end, this does not result in anything, because the mind is never going to get rid of the mind; the ego is never going get rid of the ego.

All this movement is from the illusion, by the illusion, in favor of the illusion. This movement is the search, a great trap that the egoic mind has created. It disguises itself and falls into its own trap, pretending it wants to escape from the trap. It seems it wants to break free, but its movement is a movement against it. Thus, the movement of the search only strengthens the seeker.

We are living a moment particularly in Brazil where there are many seekers, but they are blind seekers. The blind seeker is the one who walks in the dark. When a blind man walks, he bumps into many objects if he does not have a guide; if there are holes, he can easily fall into them. The search is something like this: a walk in the dark, a road full of holes and no light on it. This is the movement of the "I", of the ego, in the search.

Therefore, being a seeker means nothing. The seeker is a blind man! The point is that everyone loves this search thing, getting entertained with it - reading books, watching videos, etc., these are just entertainments. This is like to be blind and walk in the dark, on a road full of holes. You do not need the search! You need this self-inquiry, self-observation. So, it is not about looking for It in speeches, videos, books or jumping from guru to guru, which is also entertainment. In this way, you are looking for distractions. The work is completely different. The work is in the surrender, in the surrender of the “I” through this self-investigation, which is this self-observation, in a real devotion to God, to the Truth, which is the Real surrender to the Guru. So, the Guru outside, at this moment and only then, is the same Guru inside you. Then, there is neither outside nor inside.

Thus, this self-investigation is the observation of this movement of the egoic mind occupied with its desires, predilections, choices, dissatisfaction, anger, fear, focused on the accomplishment of pleasures, on the pursuit of entertainments, amusements, anyhow, with this whole willingness to a worldly and undisciplined life. Observe that the egoic mind is with its whole energy turned towards the exteriority, in a complete inattention, interested in stupid things such as being engaged in movements of social and political reactivity...

This self-investigation is the work, and it is not a matter of seeking the end of the "I", feeding the "I" with what it desires, such as spirituality, knowledge, experiences and all this sort of things. Here, it is a matter of looking at this, at this impulse, this addicted movement of going outside, of seeking fulfillment and external accomplishments, of being identified with thoughts, with what is rubbish.

If you are serious about it, you will learn to look at that sense of "someone" present, this "me", that “I”, and all the stupidity that it desires, and you will give it up. No matter how much spiritual knowledge you have, if your mind is full of stupid thoughts, if you are constantly yielding to the caprices of the stupidity of this thought. If so, this is not your time yet.

All that I just have said to you is the very action of the Grace... It is paving the way. If your home is already clean and tidy, then you can already receive a guest just as a paved way can receive a plant able to flourish. This "house" can receive a guest, the visitation of Awakening, and that is the germination and flourishing of this Truth. So, you leave the search, abandon the sense of the "seeker" and look at yourself, at all this inner disorder, this mess, to put your “house” in order and pave the way. Then, the Truth, which is already present, can flourish. Talking about a present Truth without this self-investigation, this surrender, this rendition is a great illusion. This is being a blind seeker.

The world created by thought

The thought has created this world. Everything that your eyes are seeing here, in this room, has been created by the thought. This outfit you are wearing was designed by thought ... some things the thought produces, materializes, it gives a physical form, palpable; other things, it does not materialize in the physical form, palpable, but it materializes in the form of sensations, feelings, emotions and subjective experiences. This is your world: The world created by thought.

There is nothing external, which is not internal; there is nothing outside, which is not inside. What do I mean by that? That your world is mental; a particular mental world for the illusion of “someone” present in this experience called thought. Do you follow it up? Can you see? What are you feeling right now? Result of thoughts! The thought materializes and makes palpable, visible, the objects outside and it turns real the sensations inside. So what you feel is not reliable, because it is just a thought.

What are we doing in Satsang? We are affirming the Reality of Consciousness and It does not know the world. Do you believe that God knows the world? Some days ago, I was asked who has created this, if it were the mind or if it were God. I thought it a very interesting question. Mind is a word, God is a word, Consciousness is a word. Thought can imagine these three things as distinct things and separate things, but everything is what it produces. It is in the thought everything appears and disappears. But what is it prior to this? What is it prior to and that is during and after? What name can you give to that?

We are investigating the substance of apparitions, which is beyond duality, beyond the thought – which means that it is beyond feelings, emotions, sensations, body and mind. This is where all conflict, suffering and fear end, because the outside and the inside disappear.

The problems are not in the apparitions, they are not the people, they are not in the world, they are not out there, but they are in the illusion that is inside. So what is out there is inside there. There is nothing that needs to be changed that is no longer changing, but there is not anybody doing it. That is, there is nothing being done by somebody or by a new system, because everything is only happening in a natural way. The changes are happening, everything that has to happen is already happening, but it does not have a group, an organization or a movement doing it.
You have spent a lot of time identified with the mind, which means being indentified with thought, with the illusion of this inner side, seeing things that are only in the imaginary of the thought. Being identified means bringing a subjective meaning to the experience. If I believe to understand the meaning of this experience, it is because of this subjectivity – To be identified with this “someone” who knows what is happening outside, which in fact, is only a projection of what the thought is imagining inside.

Another aspect of this identification with thought is sadness. If you have already had a moment of sadness in your life, at that moment you were immersed in a subjectivity of conclusion about an event, which produced this state that you called sad; that is to be identified. There is no sadness in the Natural State. You will never find a sad Sage, because sadness requires a lot of imagination, subjectivity and identification.

Depression, for example, is an acute case of sadness. When sadness comes to a gravest, scathing and strong point, you call it depression. It is an acute case of sadness, that is, of extreme imagination, for a supposed entity present in the experience of this pain of disappointment, of the frustration, of the abandonment, of stress, for which it cannot find the exit. Do you understand now what it means to be indentified? It is to be stuck to this experience as an entity present, so fixed, glued, glued to it, that you become one with this pain, which is purely subjective, psychological; which is purely egoic. So, you become unique, very special.

Why do not I feel sorry for the depressed, the anxious one? Because I cannot do anything by keeping consensus with the illusion ... It is the pure illusion of someone very important, very special, who can be in such an absolute sorrow, that the whole world has to work and he does not; the whole world has to take care of things from day to day and he can retire in the dark room and cry, asking others for medicine and help. The sense of importance is so great that he has to catch the eye of the world saying: "I am an emperor, a king, in my pain, and I do not have to work, take care of life, pay the bills... I do not need to do anything! It is enough to be lying down here and the world will meet all my requests. Everyone will look at me; they will consider me and recognize that this case here is a lost case. I deserve the whole attention of the world!”

You do this on several scales. Here I am pointing to the extreme scale of depression: In the dark room (light off, window closed), with an enormous amount of medicines at your side and a lot of people worried about trying to rescue you from the world, which is a fantasy.

The only thing that really matters is to find yourself

The only thing that really matters to you is to find yourself. Deep down, everything you do, or have done, or intends to do is to meet yourself.

Everything you have done in life is to find Happiness, but This is not something resulted of an external fulfillment. That means you are in the pursuit of yourself, but you do not know. The path that culture, society, the world has given to you was this movement towards outside. It is necessary to turn into yourself, to leave the street and to go back home. The mind only knows exteriority, it only knows the outside. While the mind only knows the outside, something in you only knows the inside.

There is something in you that is the basis of all external apparitions, which sustains all these outward appearances, but It does not confused Itself with them. There is something in you deeply rooted in this interiority. This something in you is this inner Presence, which does not despise the outside, but It does not get lost in it. It is the Core, the indescribable Space of pure Presence ... It is the "Heart"!

Mind means exteriority and misery; Heart represents Presence, Consciousness and Happiness. All your real wealth is inside home, not on the street. The only real thing present, here and now, is this Presence beyond mind and body. This can not be touched by death, and It has not been touched by birth either.

By going outside, leaving home, you have confused yourself with the body, with the mind and with the projects of an external accomplishment, and as a person, as a separate entity, you have become impoverished, confusing yourself with the experience "body-mind-world." You are living in poverty.

In this illusion that you have been born, you carry this illusion of falling ill, getting old and dying. You carry the illusion "I am the body," "I am in the world," and this is not true. This is the illusion of being on the outside, away from home, of being "someone" in the world, of being on the street.

When you come to me, when you listen to my words, or look into my eyes, in that instant, I talk to that interiority, this richness of your Real Nature. In that sense, there is no one talking, there is no one listening. It is Richness meeting Itself, the Heart meeting Itself, Interiority meeting Itself. It is God with Himself! You are God, but you see yourself as a person, outside of your True Nature. Outside of your Essential Nature, you see yourself on the street, you see yourself thrown onto the street, looking for something outside, looking for wealth that is not there.

You want to be healthier, to have more money, more stuff... Everyone wants to win the lottery! You want more power, you want to do something for the world, for others, you want to help humanity, you want to save the planet, you want to leave your name in history, you want to be remembered, recognized, important, famous... On the street, you always want something . On the outside, you always look for more, and this is always more of the same, more of the same things that everyone seeks, more, more, more ...

Happiness is not having more, it is not more power, it is not doing more, it is not gaining more. Happiness is only Happiness, and in it, there is no "you" and there is no “more.” Happiness is the absence of this "you,” of this illusion of being on the outside looking for something. Whoever is “something” has something to lose. Whoever is not “something” has nothing to have and therefore has nothing to lose.

So, my invitation to you is: leave the street, go back home. People are dying, but when people die, they are not coming home, they are only continuing their personal histories, personal dreams, the dreams of this illusory entity - the street remains. It is necessary to die, but to die truly. Truth means coming home, letting go of this illusion of being "someone" sustained, attached, holding, or looking for things. When you die like that, you only die once. That means dying to the past, dying to the future, dying to things, people and geographical places; Leave the time.
