Repetitive thoughts: the automatism of thought - Part I

Hello, guys. Welcome to another meeting here on the channel. We are going to talk to you about an issue that people are always involved with and don't know how to handle. It is the question of automatic thoughts. We also have the issue of repetitive thoughts, obsessive thoughts...how to deal with that? Let´s talk about this.

And here we go! Let´s go straight to the point. Automatic thoughts, that is how the mind works. So, someone asks, "but how to deal with this, with this issue of this automatism of thought, this repetitive movement of thought?"

People have an illusion... I remember that when I was young, I was also intrigued by this and one day I asked my father, I said, I asked him: "Dad, why can't we stop the thoughts? Why do I think so much? Why am I always thinking?" My Dad looked at me and did not understand the question. He said: "My son, this is just like that. Everyone is like that!" And I was very young and still did not get the answer. But the fact is that, if you look, we really do not find the answer. Nobody can find an answer to this. This movement of automatism, repetition, obsession with what thought does...in the end, what is the answer to that?

We have the illusion to be able to control this. When you come in contact with Satsang, which is this meeting here...The word "Satsang" means "encounter with Reality," "association with Truth." So, what is Satsang? It is the encounter with Reality, it is the association with Truth. You also, when you come across this meeting, you, yes, here you have the possibility to investigate this issue of thought.

After all, what is thought? Why is there all this process inside our heads when thought carries this movement of automatism, this obsessive movement, this repetitive movement? After all, what is thought?

Let´s go to the first question: What is thought? It is the basis to understand to what comes afterwards. Thought, see, always shows us memories. Thought is basically memory. So, thought is memory, thought is remembrance.

Now, this memory, this remembrance, as for it, remembrance and memory, we have an illusion: the illusion that we are the ones who produce this remembrance or this memory in the form of thought. Notice how false this is! This arrives to the answer of the reason of the automatism of thought. Notice how false this is!

When you forget something, there was no decision by you to forget. When you forget something, this forgetting simply happened, because nobody wants to forget what is needed to remember. Is it not? If you need to remember of something and you keep searching inside yourself, do you remember? No! The greater your effort to remember, the further you are from remembering, the greater is the forgetfulness.

This shows us that you are not the one who produces thoughts. So, not only can you not remember what you have forgotten, but also you cannot help but forget it. This is a belief! This shows us exactly what? There is no thinker, there is no identity present here and now, responsible to produce thoughts. So, here the point is this, this is the point number one: there is no thinker! You are not the thinker you believe to be.

So, let´s continue... This thinker is not real! The thinker is not real! So, this idea of someone, here and now, capable of thinking or dismissing thought does not exist.

So, people want to get rid of this automatism of thought, but, see, the movement of thought is something purely mechanical, and the process of this mechanicalness of thought is something without a "you" present in control of this.

That's why when you have a huge volume of obsessive thoughts, or repetitive thoughts, or automatic thoughts, you cannot do anything about it. You are lying down and this volume of thoughts automatically pops in, pops up uninvited, invite's itself to a party you are not having. You also cannot close the party and stop the dance, you cannot kick these guests out, there is no way to do that, and you lie there to sleep and cannot.

This is so because the movement of thought is an automatic movement.

The question is: How to deal with this? How to deal with this issue of automatism?
