GC: Hello, everyone! We are here for another videocast; Master Gualberto is here with us again. Thank you, Master, for being here. Today, I'm going to read an excerpt from a book by Joel Goldsmith titled "Living Between Two Worlds". In an excerpt from this book, Master, Joel makes the following comment: "The more we spiritualize our thoughts, the more we foster the action of Truth in our consciousness." Well, in this excerpt, Master, Joel Goldsmith talks about the action of Truth. Can you share your vision of what an action free from the ego is?
MG: Gilson, life is about actions happening. Everything we see in life are relations between objects, situations, people, between a person and one's thoughts. So, everything we have seen in life is the presence of relations. Relations happen all the time, and the basic, main element of these relations is actions. In nature, everything is in relation: plants, animals, marine life. the presence of life in the air, on land, in the sea, everything is in relation and actions happening. But here, when we touch on this issue of the human being, we have, for example, what we just mentioned here: person and thoughts are also in relation. But at what level is this relationship happening? At a psychological level! And at this psychological level, this action is the action of continuity, of this sense of separation from life itself.
So, we have a way of living, psychologically, which is a way of life separate from the totality of life. This is where the whole problem of the human being lies. From a psychological viewpoint, we are living in a model of existence centered on the "I," in an egocentric and therefore separatist centralization. Here, your question is about this action free from the ego. This action free from the ego is the action free from this model of relation, where this "I" and the non-"I" are present. We act in life, act in the world, based on a pre-ordained model, predetermined by thought.
So, let's take a closer look at this, because human life is so confusing, disoriented, and our actions are constantly creating confusion, both for ourselves and for others, for the world around us, because our actions are centered on the "I," on the ego. And your question is: "What is this action free from the ego?" An answer to this question requires that we first investigate together, here, the issue of the presence of this quality of action, which is the action we know, which is the quality of relation, which is the relation we have established, that we are establishing with each other, and with the world and with ourselves. Thus, we need, first, before anything else, to become aware that our actions are not free. They are not free because they are born from the past, because they are born from thought.
It is easy to observe this. When you have an idea and put it into action, this action was determined by thought, by the idea you had. At a certain level, in life, the action that is known, the known action, for the purposes and objectives of this dream of existence we have, this quality of action is reasonable. If you work in engineering, you know that everything has to be planned, so you plan beforehand. When you work in engineering, you have to plan everything; but it is the same when you work in science; but it is the same when you work in research, in science. It is the same when you work building, planning, designing in some specific, technical, functional area.
So, we need planning. You have a thought; you have a design and you set out to execute it. Then, we have action at this level. Therefore, from a technical viewpoint, in this dealing with life, knowledge, planning and execution, which is action, occur at this level. But here we have a problem when we touch on this issue of this psychological model of human existence because we are living, psychologically - the existence of this person, of this "me," of this "I" - is living within this format and these actions of this "me," of this "I," of this person, are also coming from a determination, from a pre-determination of a design or program of thought. Our actions, based on this psychological condition, produce confusion.
When you meet someone, you meet that person based on the past you have of them, on the thoughts you have about who they are. This is a mistake! Because every thought you have about them is a memory record that you have about who they were since the last time you met them. And when you meet them, you want to act and you will act based on that past. Notice, this is why, as far as human beings are concerned within their relations, our actions are actions that produce confusion, that produce disorder, that produce conflict and suffering. When you deal with someone based on the idea you have about them, this idea you have is based on the idea you also have about yourself. This idea you have about yourself is an image that you bring from the past, about who you are. And the idea you have about the other person is also an image, a thought about him or her, that you also bring from the past.
The point here, Gilson, is that in our human relations, thought is creating problems, creating confusion. Since you do not recognize the Truth of your Essential Nature because thought does not reach it, has no notion of it, you are mistaking yourself for thoughts you have about who you are. And all your actions, from thought, are actions that arise from this center, which is the "I," which is this self-image. Thus, our actions are egocentric, centered on this self-image. And these actions are conflicting, they are actions aimed at the search for this security that the "I," the ego psychologically seeks and wants to find within its actions, in its relation with life and also with others.
See what an important thing is being said here. As long as our actions are born from this psychological model of being someone, this being someone is the image I have of who "I am." As long as our actions are born from this being someone, from this "me," from this "I," from this self-image, they will be actions that are born from thought, and thought is something that, in us, comes from the past. We cannot attend to life in a Real way at this moment, from a drawing we bring from the past, from a frame we bring from the past. So, I like you based on the image I have of you. The moment you contradict me, I no longer like you.
We live within this pattern of egocentric action, of action centered on the "I," of action centered on the ego. So, this "me," this illusion, which is the illusion of the self-image, is what I have about who I am, and this is what is in relation to life, taking actions in life, in this contact with situations, events and people. Note, all of this happens, Gilson, because we do not know the Truth of That which we are, we identify ourselves with this model of thought. There is no Love in our lives, Freedom in our lives, Truth in our lives, because our actions are egocentric actions that are born from thought, that are born from the past, that are born from this mistake that is the presence of the ego, which is the presence of the "I."
So, you ask what this action free from the ego is. First, you have to become aware of the end of this sense of "I," of the ego. You need to comprehend this movement of the "I," of the ego, present, taking up this space in your life. Then, there is a discarding of this ego, of this "I," of this self-image, of this thought, of this past. Then, this quality of action is revealed, which is the action of Love, of Truth, of Wisdom, which is the action of Intelligence. This is the action free from the ego. But this action expresses itself in a natural way; it cannot be calculated by thought, described by thought, explained by thought. It is something that arises from a new dimension, from a new quality of mind, of heart, of brain. This quality of action is the action of your Being, it is the action of God.
This is what we are working on here with you. In life, we need to discover the quality of action that encompasses the totality of life. For practical, technical and functional affairs in the world, we need thought in action, but for this vision of the totality of life in human relations, in relation with others, with ourselves, the presence of this action cannot be the action of the "I," it needs to be the action of God. And this is what you, in your Natural State, express when the ego is not present. This is our proposal here, for you. We have hundreds of videos delving deeper into all of this, here.
GC: Master, we have a question from a subscriber here on the channel. Maria makes the following comment and asks: "Master, I would like to know if the desire I am feeling to seek out volunteer work is from a being who is seeing itself as separate? How can I know if what I should do with my actions is from separation or from the will of life?"
MG: Note, your own question already states that any action you take from this doubt will be an action born out of this state of confusion. So, in your own question it is already clear that this idea is produced by thought. It is a plan, a project produced by thought, it is something coming from the past. There is some level of discomfort there, and that is why you want to take actions, but there is a doubt. And you want to know if these actions are actions of life or actions of the mind. This doubt already demonstrates that what is present is confusion, dissatisfaction and, of course, any action from this state is the action of the "I," is the action of the ego.
You see, it is a very simple question, the answer is already in your own question. The Truth of Real action does not arise from thought. Doubt has arisen, the search for certainty has arisen, the search for security to take action, thought, confusion, some level of contradiction and, therefore, conflict is already present. This is how our actions are born from the "I," born from the ego, born from thought. The Truth of action happens naturally, there is no one within action, there is no plan, no idea. It is not like building a house or building a bridge or learning a language. You decide to learn the language from an idea, from a need to learn that language.
Note, from a technical viewpoint, this quality of action, okay, but there is within us the quality of action that arises from dissatisfaction, from the pain of loneliness, from the existential void, from the search for a purpose in life. Then, the quality of action of the "I," of the ego, is present. And we take this type of action precisely to try to fill that void or find satisfaction, which represents the model of action in the escape from pain, in the escape from some level of suffering. Here we need to discover what it means to look at our reactions, at our current model of thought, which is constructing these images, these mental frames, and placing this within these relations we have with him or her, or with life. Thereby, we will have the discarding of this psychological condition that is the condition of the "I."
Any thought about what to do or not to do is based on doubt and therefore on a state of confusion, purely mental. Comprehending the Truth about oneself is discarding the illusion of this self-image that thinks about acting, that thinks about actions, that thinks about doing. Natural action is action free from the ego. It happens, it emerges, it appears, but there is no self-image, there is nothing to be gained from the quality of action in Joy, in Freedom, with the quality of action in Happiness, which is the action of Love, which is the action of God, which is the action of life itself. Thus, Liberation from the sense of ego, from the sense of "I," is the presence of this quality of action, in a free and natural way. In life, the only thing that matters is to live life free from the ego, so everything happens on this level of relation.
Your state of Being in relation to life is the inclusive presence of life, inclusive of feeling, sensation, perception and also of thought, but we no longer have the presence of the ego, the presence of the "I," only this action of Wisdom, this vision of Truth. And there is no doubt, there is no fear, there is no one to ask. There is no need for any question when action is natural, because there is no longer this questioner, this doubter, this ego. That is why we have invited you to participate in online meetings in addition to these videos. In these online meetings, this begins to make sense in a much deeper way than just watching the videos.
GC: Master, we have another question from another subscriber here on the channel, who asks the following: "Master, how does the ego arise? What is ego?"
MG: Your question is: "How does the ego arise?" Notice, Gilson, how does the ego arise? The idea is that something is appearing at some point. Here we are faced with a movement of duality, of separation. We can place this or situate this within a position of appearance, but this idea of appearance in time is something that serves little purpose, like having a direct answer pointing to a moment or an instant in which this so-called "ego" arose. Here what interests us is to become aware of what is here, not this idea of when it arose, or how it arose. What matters is to become aware of this sense of separation that is present at this moment in each one of us.
An approach to the Truth about yourself requires observing the movement of the thinker, the experiencer, the observer. And we become aware of this when we perceive that what is being observed is being observed by this "me," by this "I." This is important to investigate! This is the presence of the "I," this is how the "I" arises. So, it is not about the idea of "when." But what is this movement of separation between the observer and the thing observed? What is this movement of separation between thought and the thinker? Between the feeling present and the one who feels? I become aware here and now of these reactions that arise creating this condition and, as this becomes clear, it vanishes. So, it is not about when or how this happens.
Once we have direct contact with this awareness of looking without the observer, that's the end of the ego. Once we become aware of this watching, this listening, this perceiving - which requires the presence of Self-Awareness - we come closer to Meditation. The Truth about you is that in your Real Nature you were never born. The Truth about you is that this sense of "I," of ego, of "me," is just an apparition that arises because of this principle of separation, of duality. But it is an apparition that does not establish itself as being Real, since that which is Real is beyond appearance and disappearance. So, to become aware of your reactions, without placing an element that separates itself to react, to respond out of separation, that is the end of the "I." Then the end of this illusion of "I" is more important, but you cannot become aware of the end of this illusion of "I" unless you become aware of this sense of separation. Thus, the answer to how it arises. It is just this apparition. And the truth of how it ends or vanishes lies in this awareness that What is Real never ceases to be Real.
This is the approach of Meditation. The presence of Meditation is that which is present when there is no meditator, when there is no "I," when there is no "me," no observer. Working on this, assuming this, living this, is the only thing.
GC: Thank you, Master. Our time has come. Thank you for this videocast. And for those of you who are watching the videocast until the end and really want to delve deeper into these teachings, to have this completely free vision like the Master has, we invite you to participate in the intensive weekend meetings that Master Gualberto offers. These are online meetings. There are also face-to-face meetings and multi-day retreats. In these meetings, we can delve deeper into this self-investigation because in addition to the Master answering our questions directly, he shares this state of Presence in which he lives. And in this sharing, there is a Power, a Grace and an Energy that greatly help us to self-investigate, to be able to perceive the chattering mind we have.
So, here's the invitation, in the first comment, pinned, there's the WhatsApp link to be able to participate in these meetings. Also, please, give a like to the video, subscribe to the channel, and you can leave questions here in the comments, so we can bring them to the next videocasts. And, once again, Master, thank you for the videocast.
