GC: Hello everyone! We are here for another videocast. Once again, Master Gualberto has kindly joined us. Gratitude, Master, for this opportunity to bring us here what experience is, what it means to live Free, to live in this Natural State, to live free from problems, to live free from concepts, a life truly beyond all human understanding.
Master, I want to read an excerpt today from Joel's book called “Awakening Mystical Consciousness.” In this book, Joel brings, in a small excerpt, the following sentence: “There is no real power in concepts. What you are considering as a person is not a person, it is a concept of a person.” Master, how to go beyond concept, the concepts?
MG: First, we have to understand what this sense of a present “I” is. When you look at this “I” … That’s what we investigate here: this sense of a present “I.” What do we refer to about this sense of a present “I”? A set of ideas, a set of remembrances, of memories. We refer to ourselves as someone based on the past. So, what does this “I” mean? A concept, an idea of an identity here and now, that, when it talks about itself, all it reports are words referring to memories, to remembrances of the past. This is this “I.”
Going beyond this “I” is, exactly, going beyond this concept, which is the concept of being someone. For us, this concept of being someone is not a concept, it is a truth. We truly believe that we exist here and now as someone present within living, within life, within this experience, but this is nothing more than a set of words, as I just said, a set of memories, remembrances and, therefore, the past. How to go beyond that? Investigating the nature of the “I” ... the structure and nature of the “I.” What is the structure and nature of the “I”? Past. Being attached to the past, which represents holding on to memories and placing an identity within those memories, is continuing to affirm the existence of someone present here and now. This is completely false! There is no truth in that! There's just life happening.
Life is happening... Are there memories? Are there remembrances? Are there recollections in that brain? Yes, but this does not necessarily create a present identity, which is the “I.” This “I” is sustained in the illusion that these memories, these remembrances, are real for this “me.” This is the concept of being someone. This is what sustains the sense of separation in us. So, there is this “I and the other,” “I and life,” “I and the truth,” “I and peace,” “I and happiness,” “I and love.” So, in this duality, suffering is present. Human confusion resides in this sense of an “I,” which separates itself from what it idealizes as “love,” “peace,” “happiness,” “the other” ... This sense of present identity is a self-centeredness, in which this center, which is the “I,” is something totally false.
Here, we are working with you to end this sense of “I” and therefore the end of this concept of person, to embrace the Truth that the only present Reality is beyond this “I,” this ego, this person, this illusory center. This only Reality is Divine Truth, which is the Truth of your Being, which is the Truth of God. So, the beauty, Gilson, of these meetings here, is that we become aware that the only Reality is God. That’s when God becomes aware of Himself. So, we can make use of a language to express words, remembrances, memories, to act in the world based on these memories and remembrances without the sense of an identity, which is the “I”. This is the Truth of God revealing itself. A life like this is a life without suffering. A life like this is a life where there is Real Awareness of Love, Peace, Happiness, and Freedom. This is not for this “I.” This is present in the absence of this illusion, which is the illusion of an “I,” of an identity here and now. It's basically like this.
GC: Master, even within this, there is a question from Marlene Biscarra. She asks: “No matter how much effort I do and desire I have to understand, I still find it very difficult. How can a person get rid of ignorance?”
MG: Notice what an interesting thing our questions are. Notice your question: “How can a person free oneself from ignorance?” So, notice: this person...what is this person? If we truly need to become aware of the Reality of Truth, it is necessary to go beyond ignorance. The question is: can this person do it? Is there any way for this person to accomplish this? What is this person basically? So, notice: in general, our questions always start like this: “How do I get rid of fear?”, “How do I get rid of ignorance?”, “How do I get rid of this or that?”
Why don’t we first ask, “Who am I?” Because it is in this sense of an “I” that there is fear, that is jealousy, envy; It is in this sense of a present “I” that lies ignorance. In fact, this “I” is ignorance, this “I” is envy, this “I” is jealousy. So, we need to verify the Truth about who we are, or about who we believe we are, or about what we identify with here and now, for the end of ignorance, for the end of envy, for the end of fear, for the end of suffering.
So, here is the answer to your question: examine yourself, study yourself, become aware of this movement, which is the movement of the “I”, this “me.” The basis for Truth, for Wisdom, for the end of ignorance, is in the verification of this illusion, the illusion of the “I”. This “I” is ignorance. This ignorance is the illusion of this “I.” The realization of this is the end of illusion and, therefore, the end of the “I,” the end of ignorance.
The work consists of becoming aware of this movement now, here, learning the art of getting closer to yourself, to yourself, and looking at what is happening. It's when you look at yourself, it's when you observe without the sense of someone wanting to alter, change, get rid of, do something with what you observe, that, in the presence of this Intelligence, this Consciousness, the sense of separation disappears. So, it is not about “me free from ignorance,” it is about the end of the illusion of ignorance, which is the end of the illusion of this “I.”
This attention on oneself is like opening a window and allowing the sun, which is already present, to show itself inside the room. We don't bring the sun into the room; we just open the window. The work of Self-awareness and surrender to this Truth of True Meditation opens the window. Then, the presence of the sun, which is this Divine Grace, reveals itself, bringing light into the room. This is the end of illusion, this is the end of ignorance, this is the end of the “I.” Is this clear? It's like that.
GC: Master, but it is impressive how, in this “I” identity, identification with thought is complete. Speaking about myself, I was completely unaware of how much I was identified with thoughts. Obviously, in Satsang, in this proximity to the Master, I saw how much thought... I was mixed with thought, with the thinker, and I was always dividing myself, so... But there was no awareness of this, it was completely unconscious. And then, at the moment that this awareness of thought exists without a thinker, it's something very strange, because even translating it into words...it's kind of strange. Can you, Master, talk a little more about it?
MG: Gilson, the central idea of the thinker is the movement of thought, and vice versa. The movement of thought is the idea of the thinker. This is so ingrained, this is something so intimate, that we cannot discern the truth about what thought is, because there is always the illusion of a thinker behind every thought. So, the illusion is that, behind every thought, there is a thinker manufacturing that thought. This is something completely illusory! We spend thirty, forty, eighty years of life without any piece of knowledge about what thought is. Because we don't know what thought is, we are always trapped in this condition of psychological prison, where there is this mental restlessness, this internal chatter, this anxiety, this movement of anguish, worry, depression, and all forms of fear, anxiety present because of this unconsciousness about how thought moves.
The truth about thought is that thought is just a memory that arises as a reaction of the brain itself to a given moment, to a given experience present here. The brain sees something and a thought comes, but the illusion is that this thinker is bringing that thought. This is not true. This thought is arising in response to a reaction from a vision, from a sensory perception. So, it is a reaction of the brain coming from the past, and when this appears, it appears already mixed due to the conditioning that we bring, the illusion that there is a thinker producing this. And when this happens, there is the illusion of duality: the thinker and the thought.
If thought is pleasant, this so-called “thinker” likes it, wants more, gets attached to it. If it's bad, it wants to get rid of it and then it gets into a fight. We are always, constantly, maintaining the continuity of the movement of thought, because we are always adding to each thought the illusion of a thinker. This is being done, Gilson, by thought itself. It's thought… This is very strange for you to hear: it's thought that is producing, when it arises, the idea of a thinker behind it.
So, we spend our entire lives fighting unpleasant, worrying, difficult-to-deal, distressing, negative thoughts, and we are always clinging to pleasant, happy thoughts, good memories, and experiencing the feelings and emotions involved in this memory process, always in the illusion of someone present within the experience of thought, feeling, emotion, and that sensation. This is the condition of the ego; this is the condition of ego-identity. We are never free from this model of thinking. We don’t know how to deal with thought, because we are “someone” wanting to deal with thought. Here lies the problem.
In this work, the emphasis is on you discovering that thought is merely an appearance of memory, and you do not need to be involved in this appearance, as being this “I” to judge, compare, cling to that thought, try to get rid of that thought. When this occurs, there is an end to this separation between this “I,” which is the thinker, and thought. Thought, just as it appears, disappears, because it is not being energized by this illusion of duality, by this thinker behind that thought. This is when you can free yourself from obsessive thoughts, from negative thoughts, from depressive thoughts, from thoughts that produce anxiety, from thoughts that produce fear, because there is no longer this “I,” which is the thinker, to sustain this experience. This is the end of the “I” and, therefore, the end of this ego, which is the sufferer, which is the fearful one, which is the problematic one, which is the one involved in this process of separation.
That’s when life is lived without this thinker, without this observer, without this fearful person, and a life like this no longer carries the weight of thought, the weight of fear, the weight of suffering. Maybe this doesn't make much sense to you now, because for your entire life – for thirty, forty, fifty years – your entire experience of being someone in the world is the experience of the thinker who believes to be thinking, feeling, doing, acting, listening, speaking... That's always the idea: the idea of an “I” present in the experience. This ends with the Awakening of the Truth of your Being. That’s it.
GC: Master, it's funny what the Master says and it even makes sense – and this approach that the Master explains, that the Master brings, is not so simple. And then, when... in Satsang mainly, it occasionally happens here: a memory reaction appears and this “seeing” simply happens. So, there is a pattern of thought that is very strong here. The thought pattern came, the thinker loved that thought pattern, stuck to it, generated an emotion and so on, and now, most of the time, when there is this reaction in the brain of that thought pattern coming, it is something that I don't even know how to translate it into words, but there is an awareness of this pattern of thought, and the moment there is this consciousness, as the Master said, this thought appears and simply disappears, and all that attachment – I got all tangled up in that thought – simply does not occur. It 's very funny.
MG: The problem, Gilson, is that we are not dealing with Life as It appears. In this pattern of the “I,” of the ego, in this common pattern, which I call psychological insanity, we are distorting this Sense of Reality. So, there is this Reality, but this sense of an “I” is present, which is this thinker, which is this movement of unconsciousness, of psychological insanity present, in the majority of humanity. We are dealing with this moment from a dream, which I have called “the ‘I’ dream.” Our vision of the world, of what is here, right now, showing itself, is the vision of a false identity and therefore of a dream.
We have a particular dream of the world, which is this dream of the “I.” In this dream of the “I,” there is no Peace, there is no Love, there is no Happiness, there is no Freedom, because there is, deep down, within each one of us, in this sense of the ego, a dissatisfaction created by this sense of duality. This “I,” as it comes from the past and this present moment is always interpreted from this background of desire and fear, there is always suffering, there is always unhappiness and restlessness. So, the ego, the “I,” this mind, as we know it, remains, in fact, totally unknown. We are not aware of this mind: how it processes, how it occurs, how it works. Our thinking, our feeling, our acting, is all conflicting, problematic, because it is born from this psychological insanity, it is born from this pattern of centering this “I,” this thinker, this one who feels, which is the past.
Here the proposal is: is it possible for this moment to be just what it is, without placing this element, which is the “I” element, ego, which is just a set of conditioning coming from the past, showing itself at this moment, to get into a conflict with this instant? In other words, is a Divine Life possible? This is a Divine Life, a Real Life! So, when we say “ah, this is God Realization!” or “this is the Realization of Truth!”, don’t imagine That, because we will be back to the same pattern of thinking. What this Real Life is, is this Life where the sense of an “I” that separates itself from this moment is no longer present. That's it! And this represents a vision that is not a private vision of the ego anymore, but God dealing with this dream. It’s no longer the dream of “I,” see it?
I have said: there is this divine dream, which is the dream of God, and there is this particular dream of the “I,” which is the dream of the ego. It is this particular dream that we need to free ourselves from. And God's dream? God's dream is a perfect dream, because it is God's dream. It is when the ego is present, in its particular dream of the world, of life, that problems are present. Without this, there are no problems, there is no suffering. It's strange... I know it's very strange, but it's Life... but it's a possible Life, Gilson! It is the possible Life, it is the only Real Life. This particular life of the “I” is a complication. That’s it!
GC: In this “I” are just complications, just traps, right, Master? But, internally, within many, there is this sincere yearning to “know” this Truth, to truly live this State of Freedom and have the Grace of, like many of us, having access to someone who is no longer someone, like the Master. And whoever has access – I've already said it in other videos, and I reinforce it –, whoever has this sincere yearning for God, for something else beyond all this human dream, as the Master well said, comes to Satsang, comes to the intensive meetings with the Master, because what the Master shares is something beyond this ordinary dream, this human dream.
MG: This question of the human dream is interesting. It is into this human dream that people project... into this condition of human dream, which is the dream of the “I” itself, that they project the ideal of happiness, love, peace, and truth, including the ideal of finding God. Note, everything is still within this dream. This all needs to end. Reality is present when every form of dream, of projection of the own “I” disappears. Therefore, here, it is a matter of this Truth finding you, of God finding you, and not of you searching Him, as you also look for happiness, love, and peace. Everything you can find in this search for the “I” itself is still within a projection of the “I,” is still within the dream of illusion. Do you understand it?
GC: Master, how strong it is within the “I” … The “I” is in time, right, Master? As you already said a lot about [this], the “I” is in time, and in time it comes to be: “One day I will meet God…” and, in this, it perpetuates itself, in this idea of being someone who is walking somewhere. And then, in a little while, in a mysterious way, Grace reveals Itself through a Master, as we have already mentioned here in other videocasts, and that is a unique opportunity, because it is being revealed, in this sharing of Consciousness that the Master is, in this Natural State, that this search is really a trick of the ego wanting to become, because that is not in time. It's this now, in experiencing without this experiencer, this “I,” that is always wanting to do, judging, comparing... It's Grace.
MG: That's why only Meditation reveals This, Gilson. Meditation is the key that opens this door. I speak of True Meditation... It is the key that opens this door, or rather, opens this window, so that, in this house, this light... It is like a closed, dark house, because the window is closed. You open the window and sunlight comes in. The light is already present, but it cannot enter. Contact with the Truth of True Meditation, which requires Self-awareness, which requires a work of surrender, of abandonment of this own ego, of this own “I,” opens this window. The very Presence of Grace opens this window. So, it comes from Grace Itself, from God Himself, revealing Itself, Himself to this body-mind and bringing an end to this illusion of this sense of separation. This is the Realization of your Being.
GC: Master, we have ended our time here. Thank you for this videocast. Whoever is watching the video, go ahead and leave a “like.” Those who are not subscribed to the channel, also subscribe to the channel to receive notifications of upcoming videos and also make a comment with any question or questions for us to bring to the Master at a future meeting here. And, especially for you, who have a sincere, internal yearning, something that pushes you in this “search” – who, in a little while, by Grace, will discover that you have nothing to look for, because that is already there, as the Master tells us a lot –, give yourself the opportunity, come to face-to-face and online meetings with Master Gualberto, which are the Satsangs, because, by immersing yourself in this atmosphere of the Master, we can receive this True Meditation and have some glimpse, some understanding that a life free from problems, a life free from suffering is truly possible.
Master, gratitude for this videocast. We stop for now.
MG: Okay, guys. See you soon!
