Joel Goldsmith | The Heart of Mysticism | What is the art of meditation? Marcos Gualberto

GC: Hello, everyone! We're here for another videocast. Master Gualberto is here with us again. Thank you, Master, for being here.

Master, I'm going to read an excerpt from a book by Joel Goldsmith called "The Heart of Mysticism." In an excerpt from that book, Master, Joel makes the following comment: "Silence is the language of God. Everything else is a bad translation." On this subject, can you share your vision about what the art of meditation is?

MG: Gilson, the presence of Meditation in our lives is the most important thing in life. Because, without the presence of comprehension of the Truth about yourself, whatever you do, think, or feel will be within a model, a mistaken pattern of the egoic mind, of a mind in duality, in separation.

Let's clarify this for you: thought within us is a background of memory, of remembrance, of knowledge, and we are always acting in life from this background. But the model of thought within us is based on a misunderstanding. Here, the mistake is the idea of ??someone controlling thought. Thus, there is the presence of thought and someone in control. There is the presence of an action occurring, and actions within us are also driven by thoughts, as well as by feelings and emotions. And we place, in this quality of action, the illusion of someone in action, as well as in sensation or perception.

Here, we find ourselves, in this position, within an illusory, mistaken view, because there is no one present here, in this moment, in life, as if life were happening for "me." See, there is no such thing as "someone and life." There is only the presence of Life. It is thought within us that suggests this, that creates and sustains the idea within us of this thing, that we are now thinking, as we are now speaking, or hearing, or feeling, or doing.

Here, there is the presence of a movement: it is the movement of Life itself, and the illusion of the idea of ??someone moving and responding to life. This is false! It is only Life pulsating, happening. You don't make the heart beat, you don't make a thought arise, you don't make an emotion surface or a feeling occur. All of this is Life in expression.

Just as when you look at the sky and there is no rain, and suddenly the weather changes and the rain arrives-and you did exactly nothing. that is exactly how Life is. You did nothing to make that rain happen, and now it is there, emerging, happening, for as long as it decides to happen. Then, it decides to stop, and there is no one in that decision. It is a natural event, something Divine, that you have no control over. But we have the illusion of someone present here, having control over life, having thoughts, feelings, emotions, having certainties and doubts. It is the suggestion of thought within you, creating the illusion of someone, making the rain, this particular rain of yours, which you call "my life."

So, what is the art of Meditation? It's the awareness of looking, the comprehension of looking, the perception without the perceiver, the free gaze that allows you to see Life as it happens, without the illusion of someone present. This "someone" is creating problems. This "someone" is supporting evaluations, comparisons, beliefs, conclusions about life, about how it happens. And that's why the person suffers.

Every problem in your life is solely in your particular life, in the idea of ??someone who particularized the experience of living. There is living, but there is no one living. There is Life, but there is not "someone" in Life. So, the art of Meditation brings you closer to what is most important and fundamental: the presence of a true gaze at Life. It's the gaze that allows you to witness the rain, with the clear certainty that you didn't make it. It's not you who makes the rain happen, not for the duration it lasts, nor do you make it stop when you wish. It is just there.

The beauty of encountering Meditation requires a deep comprehension of how, in illusion, thought within us establishes beliefs, establishes ideas, draws conclusions, and gives us suggestions. Direct vision of this is Clarity, Lucidity, the presence of Intelligence, which frees us from the illusion of someone, which allows Life to be what It is, without someone present. Thus, in the presence of this direct vision of Life, there is the revelation of Divine Awareness. This is Meditation. Either we continue living our days as we do, or we embrace the Reality of the days, without someone present in this experience. Thus, experiencing is Life flowing, happening here and now, moment by moment.

The presence of the art of Meditation requires Self-awareness, it requires the investigation of the nature of the "I," the structure and nature of the thinker, the experiencer, the observer, for the discarding of that illusion. When it is discarded, because there is now a new space, due to an emptying of this old content-which is the content of memory, knowledge, experiences, records, this entire history of the "I," the ego, which is, basically, thought- when we empty this history, we have a new space, and in this new space, That which is indescribable is revealed, That which is beyond the thinker, beyond thought, beyond the "I."

Therefore, the art of Meditation is the art of living. This "living life" is not someone living, it is Life in expression. Dealing with thoughts, feelings, or emotions is like dealing with rain. You don't directly engage with what happens when it rains. You stay with what is reasonable, simple, and practical so as not to get wet. You protect yourself from the rain. Dealing with thoughts requires the presence of an Intelligence to not be confused with thoughts, and to not create an identity behind thought. This identity is the "I," the ego. This is what we have been doing. This is our mistake, our mental confusion, our suffering. The reason behind fear, anxiety, depression, anguish, worries, and all human suffering lies in the illusion of someone behind thought, behind feeling or emotion, making choices, making resolutions, believing in the power to act, to interact with the present moment. This someone separates himself from Life itself and believes they can control: control thoughts, feelings, emotions, and everything else.

So, we are living in ignorance because we lack the art of Meditation, we lack the presence of Self-awareness, of a vision in Wisdom, of a perception in Lucidity, of feeling in Truth the present moment. Attending Life is not something for someone. Attending Life is something for Intelligence. Something that is present, being You, in your Essential Nature, when the ego is not, when the mind, in its confusion, is no longer present. Therefore, we need to discover what Life is without the "I," Life without the mind, Life without the ego, Life without the past. Then, there is Clarity in looking, feeling, acting, perceiving, interacting with him or her, because the ego is not there.

Thus, the art of Meditation reveals God, reveals That which is Real, that which is Eternal.

GC: Master, we have a question from a subscriber here on the channel, who made the following comment: "Master, I try to meditate, but my mind doesn't stop for a second. I get frustrated and end up giving up. Am I doing something wrong?"

MG: Notice, you say: "I try to meditate." In the presence of Meditation, there is no one-as we just stated here, in the first part, in the first answer. The Truth of Meditation is the moment revealing itself as it is. So, what we've been learning about meditation out there is mistaken, because they tell us we have to meditate, and meditation is about pushing away thoughts and focusing on a single thought, or visualizing a blue globe, or visualizing a blue ball, or breathing in a certain way, sitting in a certain way, in a quiet place. Therefore, what we're taught as meditation technique or practice is mechanical, something someone does.

We don't need to do what's already here. You don't get involved in doing it. If someone presents you with a cake, a chocolate cake, it's ready. It's placed before you; you have nothing to do but eat the cake. The presence of meditation is the Awareness of God. This Awareness of God is already here. The only thing you can do is enjoy this Divine Presence by embracing the Truth of your Being, which is the Awareness of God itself. That's eating the cake. But people dedicate themselves to techniques and practices, and then become frustrated, because they haven't grasped the truth that Meditation, like rain, happens. Meditation is also happening here, moment by moment. It's not happening for someone. That's the problem. You can't be in Meditation. In True Meditation, there is no one meditating, as people try to do. The presence of Meditation requires no effort, because it's not something-I repeat-it's not something you do, it's something that happens when the space is present.

So, what do we need for the Awareness of God, which is the Awareness of Meditation, which is already here, to reveal itself? What we need for this to reveal itself is the foundation, and the foundation is looking, perceiving, becoming aware of our reactions. Therefore, Self-awareness is what gives us the foundation for the revelation of Meditation. Therefore, what gives us the foundation to eat the cake that is already here-which is Divine Awareness, which is the Awareness of God-is Self-awareness. Paying attention, becoming aware of our reactions, at every instant, at every moment. Be aware of the thought. A thought arises, become aware of it. A feeling arises, become aware of the feeling. When an emotion arises, be aware of the emotion. Don't neglect it. Follow it, look at it. Don't get involved, don't commit, don't fall into a pattern of liking or disliking. Just look, observe, be aware. So, with the foundation of Self-awareness, the Awareness of God is revealed, this cake here is revealed, what is present here is revealed as Love, Silence, Freedom, the Bliss of this Being, which is You in your True Nature.

When you speak of an effort, when you speak of the difficulty that ultimately leads you to give up, both this effort, the difficulty and this giving up, there is the sense of someone doing the thing or trying to do the thing, and even giving it up. Here is someone there. We have countless videos here showing you. We have a playlist here on the channel showing you that the Truth of Meditation is the absence of the meditator, the observer, the experiencer. This is not something that requires effort, concentration, or technique. All involvement with technique, effort, or practice is to obtain something. Here, it is not about obtaining, it is not about achieving. Here, it is about noticing, this "becoming aware" of That which is present here, revealing itself as Divine Truth. This is the Presence of Meditation, this is the Presence of God.

So, forget absolutely everything you've learned, throw it all away. If you truly want to get closer to Real Meditation, come closer to Satsang. The word "Satsang" means association with Truth. We have online meetings taking place on weekends. Log on to Zoom and participate. We have in-person meetings, we have retreats. This requires a deep commitment to this surrender to the Truth of Self-awareness. And that's what we're working on here with you. Okay?

GC: Master, we have another question from another subscriber here on the channel who made the following comment: "I feel like I'm living on autopilot. Can you talk more about conditioning?"

MG: Gilson, the movement of the mind is automatic. And why is it automatic? Because it's a learned movement, and it repeats itself over and over again. Such are the internal processes within each of us. What we call the mind is nothing more than a movement of repetition, of continuity, of self-maintenance of the past. The presence of thought is memory. It's the past. Look at your head! You're constantly having thoughts. Where are these thoughts coming from? From memory. And what is this memory? It's the reinforcement of the past. But notice, the past isn't here. It has no importance; and yet, thought is constantly valuing the past, inside your head. And why does thought do this? Thought does this to sustain the continuity of a supposed identity, which makes you believe it is you. And why does thought do this? Thought does this because it's sustaining the idea, within you, of someone present thinking. This someone present thinking is the "I," the person you believe you are.

So, notice the game, notice the trick, the great trick of thought. All it does is maintain itself in this automatism, this mechanicality. Therefore, what we call consciousness is the presence of thought telling us something. Notice, that's what we call consciousness. When are you conscious? Isn't it when you remember? When there is the memory, you are conscious. This is what we call consciousness. Now, this consciousness, which is memory, is actually just a movement of thought. And this movement of thought is automatic. This automatism shows us that what we call consciousness is, in reality, complete unconsciousness. Mechanicity. Automatism.

We do need awareness of our reactions. This awareness of our reactions is Real Consciousness. We don't have real consciousness; we're just responding reactively, that is, from memory, from the past, within automatism. You ask: "How can we break...?" Your investigation is to break this automatism. Become aware of automatism. This awareness requires the presence of complete, deep, real, true attention, here and now, on every thought, feeling, emotion, sensation. Discover how to follow with real accuracy, with real precision, with depth, each occurrence, each event, internal or external: to look, listen, perceive this reaction. This is bringing awareness to the present moment. It's not about doing something against it, but simply about acknowledging it. When you begin to become aware of your reactions, you notice the play of thought. You notice the movement of unconsciousness. You realize that your reactions are mechanical and automatic. Then, there is a break from this old condition. This is because, in this moment, the mind becomes silent, the brain quiets, and there is a direct perception of the reality of the moment. And, at this moment, there is no longer this "I." So, in this instant, all automatism dissolves, because it is based on the pattern of unconsciousness, repetition, non-observation, non-attention.

Therefore, all the automatism present in this model of the "I," of the ego, is, in fact, inattention. This is the unconsciousness of this egoic consciousness. What ends this condition is looking, perceiving. It is what brings this Mindfulness to the moment. Then, we break with the sense of "I," with the sense of ego. We thus have an approach in this Self-awareness of the Truth of Meditation, the Awareness of Meditation, which reveals that which is beyond the mind, beyond the "I," beyond the ego, and therefore, beyond the unconsciousness and automatism of the mind, this egoic mind. Okay?

GC: Gratitude, gratitude, Master. Our time is over now. Thank you for this videocast. And for those of you who are watching to the end and truly desire to experience these truths, I invite you to participate in the intensive weekend meetings that Master Gualberto offers. In these meetings, which are much more profound than these videos here on YouTube, something very powerful happens: because the Master already lives in this Awakened state of Consciousness, He shares a field of presence around you. And, in these meetings, we end up being carried by this field of Master's presence, which is pure Power and Grace. And, by being carried by the Master, spontaneously, effortlessly, we quiet our minds, enter the meditative state, and can truly glimpse what these Truths are. So, the invitation remains. In the first pinned comment, there's the WhatsApp link to participate in these meetings. Also, please like the video and subscribe to the channel. And, once again, Master, thank you for the videocast.
