Here, our meetings are about discovering how to be attentive, how to pay attention to this moment, without placing this element that separates itself from the moment in order to make choices. And why is this fundamental? Because this is what provides the answer to the question: "What is life?"
Life is what happens, not what thought says it is; it is not what thought tries to say about it, to talk about it. This moment now, here, is a unique moment. There is no room in this moment for something like thought present making an interpretation of this instant.
So, placing yourself, at this moment, just to follow what is happening here is to position yourself in this attention to the moment. In this attention to the moment, we have the Revelation of life as it is.
Notice that it is when thought arises that ideas about how life should be happen, not when you look at experience and discover what it is to deal with experience. It is when this moment becomes a particular experience for you that your contact with the moment is this particular contact of thought about what should be. In this moment, we are not faced with an experience as a pure experiencing, we are faced with an experience for someone. Let's delve deeper into this here, with you, at this moment.
This sort of investigation is important here. This investigation is the one that brings you closer to the truth about yourself. So, it is very important, in life, to learn. We do not know how to learn. We can learn some things in life; in fact, we can learn many things in life, but to be very honest in this statement - and don't be upset with what I am going to say - we learn many things, but many of these things we learn poorly and inadequately. And why? Because our heart was not inclined to this learning.
Here it is important for you to realize the beauty, the importance of this extraordinary thing, which is learning about yourself, which is learning about Self-Awareness, because this is the basis for a life in Love, in Freedom, in Happiness, in this Divine awareness, in this awareness of God.
Here we are with you in this learning about Self-Awareness, and this requires a new approach. In general, we have a lot of difficulty in learning, especially a subject like this, which involves the end of this psychological condition of conditioning, in which we have already been established throughout our lives. After all, this learning here requires unlearning this confusion, this disorder, these conflicting and distressing psychological habits that have been part of our lives and to which we are already very accustomed.
Notice the difficulty we have, for example, in listening to something. We listen with opinions, with inclinations to like or dislike, to accept or reject, saying internally "yes, I agree" or saying "no, I don't agree with any of that." Notice, this is how we function psychologically, and it is something like a conditioning, like a mechanical process of functioning. We are not aware of any of this, and all of this happens because we have not learned that this moment is a moment of listening, of paying attention, of observing, precisely to these internal reactions within each one of us.
So, this is the science of approaching Self-Awareness. There is a basic element here for this approach, and this basic element is this looking, this listening, this perceiving, without these conclusions, opinions, evaluations, beliefs, without this liking or disliking. The importance of this approach in this attention, in this Mindfulness, which is just listening, perceiving, being aware of, for example, here, the speech, this requires a quiet brain, a silent mind, and the beauty of this is that when this is present, we are accessing something fundamental in life, which is the presence of Intelligence.
You see, there is a presence within you of extraordinary Intelligence. We do not access it because we do not approach this study of ourselves, this vision of the truth of how we function, which requires the presence of this attention. So, here, the subject is the Truth of this Mindfulness and Self-Awareness. Here, the subject is the approach of this learning about how we function.
All of us, in life, have problems. There is no problem in life, there is a problem in us. We are the basis, the reference for life with problems. It is not life with problems, it is the particular life of this sense of someone present. This someone is present when there is this lack of attention to life as it happens, because we are always, based on memory, on the past, reacting to the present moment, responding to the present moment based on a reaction that comes from the past. See how delicate this is.
Life is happening now, here, bringing us challenges. They are present challenges, and these challenges find us, but these challenges are challenges when they meet this element in you that reacts to life as it happens. So, life as it happens is a challenge to this sense of the present "I" that separates itself from life to react to the present moment, in this thought, feeling of liking, disliking. This is the absence of this looking, of this observing, of this "realizing" life as it happens.
This self-discovery, this self-revelation of your Essential Nature, of your Divine Nature, which occurs with the Awakening of this Intelligence, which is Spiritual Intelligence, which is the Intelligence of God in you, is something present when you discover what it is, in that moment, just approaching it without this experiencer, without this thinker, without this observer. This observer, experiencer, thinker is the element in you that you feel to be you and that, in reality, is a reaction of memory, it is an element that comes from the past and that evaluates, judges, compares, accepts and rejects everything based on thought.
There is a Reality present, but this Reality is not in this thinker, in this experiencer, in this observer. And this present Reality is the one that reveals itself beyond this "me," this "I," this person. This is what we are working on here, with you, for this realization. The realization of this is the Truth of the Presence of Real Meditation. So, the Truth about Meditation is the presence of Reality without this element that comes from the past.
So, there is a new way of approaching the present moment, no longer considering this present moment as an experience for the "I," for this "me." Because the great truth is that this moment is a unique moment, it has never happened and it will never happen again. Therefore, we cannot take an experience from it, and that is what thought has done in this old model of egoic consciousness, of consciousness of the "I."
We are passing through moments and transforming these moments into experiences for this experiencer, into perceptions for this perceiver. This way, you have memories, images of the world around you; you have people you like and you have people you don't like; you have friends, you have enemies. As long as the sense of this experiencer, thinker, observer, as long as this movement, which is the movement of the "I," of the ego, of this "me," is present, all this contact with the moment will be the contact of an experiencer acquiring experiences, it will be the contact of an observer seeing things separate from itself, things it likes and dislikes, people it likes and people it doesn't like.
So, our relationship with life, in this self-centeredness, in this sense of someone present in the experience, is a condition of existence in isolation, in this separation. So, we are constantly giving continuity to this element that comes from the past. And what is this element that comes from the past? It is the imagination of an entity that has friends, that has enemies. Notice the implications of this.
Our relationship - and life consists of relationships - with the world around us is a relationship that has as its principle a present element that has things, that is afraid of losing things, that does not have things and desires to gain those things. You see, we cannot have anything, nor can we lose anything, because the great truth is that this feeling-thought "I" is only a fiction, an imagination of a present identity that possesses, that gains and that loses, and yet it is here that this life of the "I" is present, this life of the person as we see ourselves in life: in suffering - suffering for things that are being lost, suffering for things that have not been gained.
So, in this sense of the ego, of the "I," in this illusion, in this fiction of existence, of identity separate from life, the human being is possessive, jealous, envious, attached, full of jealousy, envy, and has many fears. This is the life of the "I," this is the life of the ego. Can we break with this and go beyond this psychological condition of illusory identity present in life to the Real Life, free from this "me"?
Here we are telling you that life is what happens. There is no one present in life as it happens. But we are creating life as it should happen, could happen, as we, in the ego, in this "I," in this self-image, in this image that thought has built about who we are, are seeing life happening. Here, with you, we are working on the Awakening of your Divine Nature, the Awakening of the Truth about you.
So, the presence of this look at the moment, of listening to the moment, of perceiving the moment, without the interference of the model of the past, which is this fictitious "I," which is this illusory "I," is the presence of attention. In this attention, the Truth about Self-Awareness is revealed, which is nothing other than the discarding of this illusion, of all this illusion that has been human life. This is how human beings are living, this is how we were educated to live: an illusory life, separate from the Reality of Real Life, from this Divine Life.
See the implications of all this: all this mess, confusion, suffering, conflicts, contradictions, the countless problems and difficulties that we have in life are all centered on this illusory identity that sees itself separate from life, that sees itself separate from others, that sees itself separate from God. To have an approach to life in this moment, as it really is, as it really happens, without this sense of someone present, who carries this illusion of being able to do, choose, decide, control, reject, accept, is to have contact with this moment without any separation. When there is no separation, there is no disorder, there is no confusion, there is no suffering, there is no conflict, there is no problem.
A Life in Bliss, a Life in Love, a Life in Peace, a Life in Freedom, a Life in the awareness of Life itself is the Real Life in its purpose, it is the Real Divine Life, it is the Real Life of God. This requires the Presence of that Silence, that Space that opens up when you, in your Divine State, in your Natural State, is the very Presence of Meditation. So, this is what we are investigating here with you. What is life at this moment? It is the Truth of this awareness of God, which is You in your Real State, which is Meditation, in that absence of the "I," in this absence of the ego.
