A very common thing in life is this movement in us to escape from pain, to be always looking for something that fills us sentimentally, emotionally, psychologically, and that takes the place of this pain. Note that it is undeniable that, psychologically, as human beings, we live in a confused, disoriented way. We have problems of various types; and there is this movement of escape within us.
Here we have explained to you the difference between approaching oneself for Self-awareness and this movement of escape. So, escape and Self-awareness are something to be comprehended, investigated. We need the Truth of Happiness present in life, the Freedom that is present in it, the Love that is present in it. We do not have eyes for this, because we are always looking at life from the model of thought; and in this model of thought, we are looking for something.
I want to touch on this with you here, this no need for search. We have two ways of doing this: the first is by searching in the world, in the material environment; the second is by searching outside the world, in the so-called spiritual world or in the spiritual environment. Either we are searching for material achievements or spiritual achievements. This movement of search is, in fact, a movement of searching for experiences. So, let us touch on this here with you now, at this moment.
This search for experiences are projections that we have of what would be ideal for each one of us. Where do these projections occur? In the mind. The mind within us is the presence of the projection mechanism. What we call the mind is this present movement of consciousness within us; this movement is a movement of thoughts.
We were educated to live within a cultural context in which everyone is at some level of internal dissatisfaction, at some level of internal psychological condition of suffering, guiding their lives in this search, in this pursuit. And we have learned this, and we are constantly projecting, from within ourselves, from this conditioned mind, from this cultural model that we received from the world, also our ideals, our projects, our dreams, that which will make us happy. This is how we are moving through life, in this search.
This search is the attempt, in this projection of an ideal to be achieved, in this accomplishment of an experience, to escape from what is present here, which presents itself as dissatisfaction. Here I want to touch with you on the beauty of this encounter with what is here in this moment, without running away.
People are looking for relief from pain, for a refuge, for a place where they can hide, hide away, so as not to be reached by suffering, by some level of discomfort. Hence these two alternatives - this so-called material search or spiritual search - are learned alternatives, they are alternatives of thought, of this pattern of cultural conditioning.
What would it be like to face pain without running away? They don't show us the importance of this. You will never become aware of the end of this pain while you are escaping from it. This movement of escaping pain is a movement that does not end. Thus, every form of search does not end. It does not end because this element in the search, like this element in the pain, continues to live. And who is this element? It is the element that seeks to separate itself, to preserve itself, to distance itself from life as it is, from life as it happens. This element is the "I," this element is the ego, this feeling of personhood that you have, of someone, of this "me."
When you, for example, are angry with someone, instead of dealing with the pain of anger, the internal movement within you is to justify the anger, explain the anger, or take revenge, because there is in us the imagination that by doing so, this pain will end or diminish. This is the movement of running away from the pain, of escaping from the pain. We do not know how to deal with anger, but we also do not know how to deal with fear, with anxiety. We do not know how to deal with the pain that jealousy is causing in each one of us. The movement is to take revenge, to justify, to explain, to seek some new experience; this search for a new experience is to escape this contact with the pain.
The Truth of the Revelation of Bliss, of Love, of the Peace of Freedom, resides in the awareness of the Truth about You, and you do not have this awareness while you run away. Thus, this search is a distancing from oneself - this search for a new experience. This escape is a distancing from oneself. All this in an attempt to not deal with the experience and not to contact the experience, not to confront it, not to come into direct contact with it. This preserves this sense of ego, this sense of "I." In this self-preservation, pain, dissatisfaction, anger, fear, jealousy, envy are constantly present.
The various problems that you have in life only exist because you, as someone, are seeing yourself in this context, in this model of seeking new experiences or escaping from this condition. Here, the presence of Self-awareness gives us the basis for the end of this psychological condition, which is the condition of this someone, of this "me," of this ego. So, what is Self-awareness? Self-awareness is the awareness of what is. It doesn't matter what is present; what is present is what needs to be seen. What is present is what is revealing itself, what is present is what was inside and is coming to the surface; what was hidden and is coming to the surface; what was deep inside and is showing itself at this moment.
The basis of our relations, when they are based on this ignorance about this "me," this "I," this ego, are relations that are constantly producing suffering, producing discomfort, producing problems. This is present because of the presence of ignorance. You see yourself as a separate element from him or her; this separation is sustained by a construct of thoughts that you have about who you are, about who he or she is. This is how all our relations are. They are producing confusion, producing disturbance, producing disturbances for both, for this "me" and for the other, for this someone and for the other. This is the life of the "I," this is the life of the ego.
So, what is the presence of Self-awareness? It is the presence of the awareness of how you are functioning at this moment, of how you feel, of how you think, what your emotions are, what your vision of him or her is, what your vision of yourself is. The awareness of this is the presence of Self-awareness. Comprehending oneself, becoming aware of oneself, and discovering what this "me" is, what this someone is. This is only possible when you are no longer in search, either of experience or escape. In search of an experience of gratification, of greater fulfillment, of greater satisfaction, of greater external fulfillment, or in search, in this sense of an escape, the search to escape from this state in which you find yourself.
If there is fear present, it is fear to be seen. If it is frustration, if it is disappointment, if it is anger, that is what is present here, that is what you are. Getting closer to yourself is becoming aware of how you function, of what these internal processes are in this consciousness, which is the consciousness of the "I," which is the consciousness of this "me." And when there is no such separation, this contact with oneself brings us closer to the Revelation of how this "I," this thinker, this element in feeling, this element in action responds to this moment. When we come across this comprehension of ourselves, a new quality of action emerges; this action is the end of this reaction response, which comes from this past movement.
You have always responded with sadness to thoughts of sadness; you have always responded with anger to thoughts of upsetment - ??of frustration of your desires - and now you are realizing this. Your relation with him or her has always been, within you, suspicious, insecure, fearful; this has just revealed to you the presence of jealousy, of emotional dependence. Note, the awareness of oneself is not to do something against it or to do something with it, but it is simply to become aware. The simple and direct look, without this element that comes from the past to interfere with it, is the elimination of the ego, it is the elimination of the "I."
So, what do I do to free myself from jealousy, envy, fear, anger, worries? Observe! Just observe the pattern of thought, the pattern of reactions, that have always been repeated there in this structure, in this body and mind, whenever they appeared, whenever they appear. Be aware of this, in this instant. You are in touch with the present moment without this element that separates you, which is the observer, which is the thinker, which is the experiencer, which is this "me," this "I." This is the presence of Self-awareness.
So, what is Self-awareness? It is to realize, to become aware, to bring to this moment the comprehension of the very movement of this "I," which separates itself into observer and observed thing, into thinker and thought, into experiencer and experience, into this "I" and the "non-I." When you become aware that an image has been constructed, and from this image this movement of reaction maintains its continuity, due to inattention, simply looking at it is the presence of Attention, it is the presence of Consciousness, the presence of this passive, real vigilance. Thus, a new quality of action emerges.
This is what I could call here as the practical vision of Self-awareness. Some out there call the practice of self-awareness something entirely different from what we are addressing here, because it is not about someone knowing themselves in order to adjust, to change, to behave in a different way. Here, the presence of Truth, of the awareness of Self-knowledge, of practicing Self-awareness, is not someone involved in a practice, but the pure awareness of the revelation of this "me." This is practicing Self-awareness! It is not someone practicing Self-awareness. It is Truth of the awareness of oneself revealing oneself.
Revelation itself is the end of this psychological condition of duality, of "I" and "not-I," of observer and observed, of experiencer and experience. So, the truth of this self-inquiry is the awareness of this looking, without the past. It is just looking, listening, perceiving; it is becoming aware of oneself, in this instant. This is the end of the "I," this is the end of this "me," this is the end of the ego. This ends the search for experiences, this ends the escape for these states. This is the end of the "I" in search or in escape, this is the end of the ego.
A contact with the Reality of this Being is a contact with the Reality of That which is beyond this "me," this sense of someone present. Then, there is a profound change, there is a profound transformation. Something new emerges, and this new Something is the presence of Love, it is the presence of Freedom, it is the presence of Happiness, when the "I" is not there, when the ego is not there, when all this psychological disorder, which thought sustains in this egoic consciousness, is no longer present. This is the Flourishing of your Natural State of Being, which is Real Consciousness, which is Real Bliss. It is the presence of God, it is the presence of Truth.
