Ramana Maharshi: the Sage of Arunachala and Advaita Vedanta | Personal development | The Jnana

Hello everyone! Welcome to another meeting here on our channel.

You all know that on this channel, our purpose is to discover this matter of Spiritual Enlightenment. How to Realize This here in this life? How to discover the Truth about who we are? How to find This within ourselves?

Human beings want to develop personally, they want to grow and change, they want to find something within this development, this change and growth, that can really satisfy them for their personal development, and here I want to question that.

First, it’s important you discover the Truth about who You are before you go in search of that development of the person, of that “person” you believe to be.

So, the question should, first of all, be this: “Who am I? What is the truth about me, about this ‘me’ that I am?” Or: “Is there really a ‘me,’ an ‘I’ to evolve, to grow, to change?” This is important because this issue of development is explained and elucidated.

Here, I want to reveal something about it. You are Consciousness. As Consciousness, there’s no change in What essentially You are, and each and every apparent change within this “person” you believe to be, which is basically that personality, will never represent What you seek, What you, actually, seek with this personal development.

I know what you're really looking for. All of us are looking for basically the same thing. A human being is in search of Happiness, in search of Love, in search of Completeness, something that can only be realized in your own Being, in Acknowledging the Truth of who You are. And for that, we don't need personal development, we basically need the Self-knowledge.

Understanding the Truth about Yourself - This is Self-knowledge. It’s not about the knowledge of this “person,” this “me,” this “I,” this personality, but rather the Knowledge of your Divine Nature, your Essential Nature. So, this Knowledge, the Self-knowledge… Ramana Maharshi was the greatest exponent of all time on This - Ramana Maharshi, the Sage of Arunachala. Knowledge according to Vedanta is Jnana, and Ramana was the greatest exponent of this important matter: the matter of the True Knowledge.

It’s not about common knowledge, ordinary knowledge, knowledge based on experience, memory, remembrance, experimentation, on ordinary life, scientific life or on so-called “science” as we know it.

Here, we mean Jnana, the legitimate, the true, the ultimate Knowledge, which is the Knowledge of Oneness, of non-separation, non-duality, the knowledge of the Divine Truth of all manifestation. What is the origin of This? What is the Truth about who I am, what life is, who God is? Where does this Reality exist? Where is this Truth called God, Presence, Consciousness?

So, the Jnana is about this Knowledge, the Ultimate Knowledge, which basically is the only Knowledge that can give you the Truth of the Revelation about who You are, and therefore, the end to suffering. Suffering ends when the sense of separation between you and Life, between you and God, ends. So, This is something much bigger than this personal development. Then, this Self-knowledge is the Knowledge of Yourself, the Jnana about Yourself, the Knowledge of the Divine Truth You bring.

Vedanta is the last part of the Vedas, and there you have access to the theoretical aspect, the verbal aspect of the Vision of all Sages. I mean Advaita, Advaita Vedanta. So, that Advaita Vedanta, which is the last part of the Vedas, reveals the Truth of who You are, the True Jnana, the Real Knowledge.

That's what we deal with here on the channel, and also on online and in-person meetings since, basically, Life reveals in Itself, in this direct Knowledge. Otherwise, there’s no revelation at all. The basic revelation of Life is in the Revelation of who You are. In this Oneness of being, there’s Completeness. Then, there is no one to develop; there is no development of the person, but rather the Verification that there is no “person” to evolve, to grow, to change.

The contact with the Truth of who You are is the end of all knowledge, the end of the illusion of the experiencer, the thinker, the one who believes in existing as a separate entity. Why is This fundamental to human life? Because This answers each and every question. The basic, primary question, the primary… if it’s not answered, many other questions arise, and the Truth of this Revelation of that primary question, This answers all other questions. “Where is the encounter with Happiness? The encounter with Love, where is it? The encounter with Life in Peace, where is it? Where do I find What will represent the end of all suffering, of all psychological misery, of all this internal contradiction I am living in?” Thus, the answer to all these questions is in the answer to this primary question: “Who am I?”

And that's what Jnana is about. Ramana put that as the basis of Truth, of Revelation for that Truth.

Therefore, the direct path to the Acknowledgment of the Truth about who You are, is in this self-inquiry: “Who am I?” So, this is what matters to be apprehended, understood, experienced. In this sense, the Jnana gives you access to the Yoga of the Revelation of your own Being. Then, the Jnana Yoga is what you can practice everywhere, anywhere, anytime, in any situation of everyday life. The practice of Jnana Yoga lies in being here and now, aware of all this movement of the mind present, all this movement of this “sense of person,” of the personhood thought is producing within you.

Then, the Real Revelation of your Being is at the end of this illusion, the illusion of this “sense of person,” something that lives and depends on the psychological time - I refer to this as time created by thought. Basically, the end to that time, the end of psychological time, is the Revelation of your Being, which is Consciousness. And what is psychological time? It is this movement of the mind based on memory, on thought.

Human beings are either in the past or in the future. Their lives reside in this context of psychological time, of remembrance, of memory. Basically, thought upholds it. Thought upholds this condition, the psychological time condition for this entity, for this “person” you believe to be.

So, human beings live on recollections, on remembrances, on memories; they mistake themselves for these memories, for these remembrances, these recollections. They see themselves in time; they move in this so-called “present, past and future” as a separate entity, in this mistaken notion of being “someone,” in this illusory notion of being “someone.”

Then, the Self-knowledge gives you the Vision of the Truth of your own Being, and there is Completeness, and there is Peace, and there is Truth, and there is Spiritual Enlightenment. Then, it’s not about this personal development, but rather about the Realization that there is no entity present to achieve something, to accomplish something.

Truth is present here! You are full, complete, in What You are.

All you need is this Awakening to the Truth of your own Being. All we are proposing within these meetings, within this Vision of the Real Knowledge, of this Ultimate Knowledge, of this Final Knowledge, is that you Awaken to this Divine Reality of your own Being.

Then, through Self-knowledge, you have access to this self-inquiry, because from this moment on, you are investigating this illusory “me,” this sense of ego identity, and discarding the egoic life, ending this illusion of all this time created by thought.

Notice, thought is telling a story about who you are and molding patterns of behavior, moving you every day into feelings, emotions, giving you sensations, perceptions, and all of this based on the criteria thought has.

Thought doesn’t deal with Life as It is, thought doesn’t deal with Reality. This behavior of thought is of ignorance. So, the illusion of the egoic sense, that sense of separation, that has upheld this psychological time for this entity with which you mistake yourself for, it’s within that foundation: the foundation of ignorance. In India, they call it the illusion of ignorance, and what can break this is the Vision of Knowledge. And here, it’s not about theoretical, verbal knowledge, but rather about the direct, experiential Knowledge of your own Being.

Then, your Being needs to Awake, to Awaken; this Consciousness needs to take over this body-mind. This egoic mind condition is of mental consciousness. Unless there is the Awakening of that Consciousness, that old and ancient pattern, that old and ancient movement will continue. Thus, the Awakening of your Being is the Awakening of Consciousness. And there’s a mechanism in the body there, a whole mechanism capable of realizing this process of the Awakening of Consciousness. In Yoga, this is called Kundalini.

So, this Kundalini goes through an Awakening process - this Kundalini Energy. When it Awakens… it’s settled in the body, at the base of the spine, and when it goes up, it creates a change in this structure, in the body and in the mind. So, this is the process of Kundalini Awakening, which is the Awakening of your own Being, which is the Awakening of Consciousness. And for this to become possible, the Vision of Discernment, the Vision of Real Knowledge is proposed to you.

Then, our encounter… in it, here, we propose the practice of Jnana yoga, in your living, in your daily life. This can be done anywhere, anytime. Here on our channel, we have a playlist about Meditation. And there are two very full ways for it to happen, very perfect, very complete for this to happen for you. One is through True Meditation, this self-inquiry. In this self-inquiry unfolds the True Meditation, the process of Meditation here and now. The question is “who am I?” This is the self-inquiry put by Ramana Maharshi. This is called Atma Vichara.

The question “who am I?” brings you to this instant, to this moment. It makes you question all these patterns of behavior; it makes you break this model of psychological time pattern, of conflicts and contradictions produced by thought inside you. So, for example, you are challenged in an argument, and in an argument… no one wants to lose, but no one wonders why it’s so important to win an argument. It’s the nature of the ego to always seek to prevail, to win, to gain, because it feels null, empty, powerless, unable, if it loses. Thus, the desire to argue when challenged and win is very strong, and this is a purely egoic propensity. A human being doesn’t want to be annihilated - this is a typical egoic movement. Then, you need to investigate who is it that cannot lose. For whom is this victory so important, this pain that arises when your ego is defeated, annihilated, for example, in an argument, in a debate?

Here, I’m giving you an example. You can find many examples of how much the ego feels diminished when it is offended, when it is hurt, when it is injured, when it is challenged in its foundations of certainty, of self-confidence. So, they are patterns present in the ego. We are envious, we are jealous, we have our self-image hurt or offended, and when you ask yourself the question “who am I?” you have entered this process of direct Acknowledgement of the Truth about who You are. At this moment, you are in this question, observing yourself and realizing that all this movement is of pure reaction, of pure egoic reactivity.

So, when this happens, at that moment, without resisting, without fighting, without condemning yourself, without censoring yourself, also without defending yourself, looking inside and realizing all this resistance to this movement of life, seeing this “me,” this “I,” this ego, this egoic pattern… this direct look at this reaction, this breaks this process of continuity of an ego safeguarding itself, protecting and defending itself. This is real renunciation of illusion. I’d say that this is the real spiritual practice, which is present in this self-inquiry “who am I?”

Therefore, Meditation, the True Meditation, is that which must be done here and now, in each and every situation, in each and every circumstance, this looking within yourself, moment by moment. That’s the first way.

And the second way is in Guided Meditation. On the playlist, I put for you a form of Meditation and another I call True Guided Meditation the contact with this Consciousness bringing that guidance to this Meditation, showing you by its Divine Grace what it is like to enter that State of Meditation, becoming aware of the egoic movement, becoming aware of the movement of the “I.”

This happens when you are in some space, somewhere, and in contact, for example, with something in nature, it creates a tremendous impact within you and there is a Space, a new Space opens up. Your mind stops at that moment before a sunset, before a full moon, looking at the sea… and at that moment there is a Space, your egoic mind is kind of swept away and you get in touch with something inside you beyond the egoic mind, with a Silence, with a Beauty, with something outside of what thought can explain. Then, there’s this Space, there’s this Stillness, there’s a Joy without any reason present.

So, this is another form of this contact with Meditation. This is Guided Meditation. This serves… This can happen in contact with nature, this can happen in contact with a Realized Being… something that touches you: a speech, a look, a moment of encounter, then there’s a power present and this natural process of Perception of Reality outside the ego takes place, outside this center of self-defense, of desire and fear. Then, this new Space is revealed.

The contact with a Realized Being, in India they call it Darshan - the contact with the Divine Presence. In Existence everything is full of this Presence… in all Existence!

You are alienated from this Presence and you don’t get in contact with this Presence because you are involved in this psychological time, in this egoic movement, and you don’t do this work of self-inquiry, this work of Meditation.

So, here, I want you to understand that it is possible to Realize your Self, your Divine Nature, the Truth about who You are. This happens when the Kundalini Awakens. Then, this Energy takes possession of that body and that mind, in True Meditation or the True Guided Meditation. So, the process takes place in that organism, in that mechanism, for the Awakening of Consciousness. It’s this Awakening of Consciousness that every human being needs, and he has the Truth within this Revelation of Self-knowledge, which brings Meditation, and in this Meditation there’s something outside the ego that is revealed, which is your own Being, taking on this body and this mind! Ok?

This is the subject we address to you. Leave your “like,” leave your comment… We have online and also in-person meetings. If this touches you, let's work it out together! Ok?

See you next meeting!
