Gilson – Hi guys, we're here for another videocast. Gratitude, Master, once again for your presence here with us. Master, today I'm going to read an excerpt from Joel Goldsmith's book “The Infinite Way”, which was his main book. I also bring you some questions about what this Real State of Meditation is, about what it is and what it's like to live free, the way the Master does.
First, I'm going to read this excerpt from Joel's book called “The Infinite Way”. In this excerpt, Master, Joel says the following: “All the good necessary for our well-being will be provided to us in great abundance when we can accept that we have to abandon our efforts and desires to have, to achieve or to accomplish, and go deeper into the desire to fulfill only our destiny on earth.” Master, on this subject of destiny, life mission, the purpose of life, can you tell us a little bit about your vision on this subject?
Master – Gilson, the only truth about you, about each one of us, is the Truth of Life. And Life is already extraordinary, it is already complete. Look at what we're saying: it's already a great, indescribable event, it's the True Nature of each one of us. The movement of restlessness in us, of dissatisfaction in us, of fear and desire in us is what idealizes something separate from Life. So, there is this restlessness, there is this dissatisfaction, but it doesn't come from Life, it comes from the “I”, from the ego.
Only the sense of an “I”, which is the ego in us, has ideals, goals, aims, and purposes. Your True Nature, being Life, is complete. So, Gilson, it's a great fantasy that we've been shown out there – within philosophy, psychology, spirituality, or any other science that involves this aspect of thought present, human thought present – this idea of purposes and goals.
I would say, Gilson, that the only purpose is Life; Life is already your own purpose. The only thing here is to assume this Truth that You are Life. Assuming this Truth is the end of the “I”, the end of the ego, and it's exactly the opposite, it's the end of every goal, every target, every intention, since this intention, target, and goal are born precisely from egoic dissatisfaction. Do you understand it?
It is always the sense of an “I” in its dissatisfaction that is looking for something, that is searching for something. Even this so-called “search for God” needs to be understood, because who is it that is searching for God? Is it the “I”, the ego? Certainly not. So, what's wrong with this search? In fact, the “I”, the ego is dissatisfied, and it is projecting something as a greater satisfaction. First, it was looking for it outside, in external achievements, and now it's looking for it here, in so-called “inner” achievements. First, it looked for it in materialism, now it's looking for it in spiritualism. But the “I”, the ego, is not searching for Truth, it is searching for a greater and permanent satisfaction, since everything it has achieved has proved impermanent to it. Realize how fascinating it is to have a clear understanding of this.
The ego, Gilson, by nature, is dissatisfied, and there is nothing that can satisfy it. It achieves in the material world, becomes someone famous, successful, rich, powerful, loved by many, but it is still miserable, still unhappy, still complex, still bored with itself. Even in the midst of all the comfort, pleasure, and wealth, it remains dissatisfied. Nothing can really satisfy the “I”, the ego, because it is the structure, the nature of the ego to live dissatisfied, and nothing can satisfy it. It lives in incompleteness because it lives in this sense of separation, where there is “it and life”, and life is seen by it as something always to be achieved; and however much it achieves, it is never satisfied, because it is in its nature to be dissatisfied because of this separation. In this separation, we have conflict.
So, Gilson, the general idea of seeking a purpose is typical. Understand that. Life is Love, is Beauty, is Truth, is Freedom, Life is Divine Celebration when the “I” is not, and when the “I” is not, there is no other purpose. Life is its own purpose, Life is its own goal, but it is not the goal for “someone”; it is not the purpose for “someone”; it is Life in Life for Life when there is no longer the “I” element separating itself.
It's something simple and at the same time wonderful, the comprehension that Life is God, and Life as God is your Being, but the person is not, this set that we call person, which is a center that has stored experiences of all kinds – they are experiences of humanity, of collectivity, of society, of the world.
So, the human being, living this condition of being human, in the egoic life, in the egoic mind, will always fantasize about something in the future, within a goal to achieve, to complete oneself. This is completely false. Even because, Gilson, we have explored and investigated this with those who approach this work. Note that all these notions of time that we have are fantasies of thought. There is no time. There is no time to be happy, no time for love to arrive, no time for happiness to be found. This is fantasy. Either That is here and is seen in this Reality of simply Being, or That cannot be achieved. Happiness is not found in time, Love is not found in time, Truth is not found in time, God is not found in time.
All that is found in time is satisfaction, is pleasure. People call it happiness, they call it an encounter, but it's an encounter where there's this “I” and that other thing being found, and once the thing is found, it always proves to be insufficient. So, it's always about satisfactions being achieved.
So, these so-called “purposes” are fantasies. You fulfill one purpose and then you have another purpose and then you have another purpose. And who is always dissatisfied in this achievement? The ego, because this illusion is in its nature. Life carries this Beauty of Being Happiness, Consciousness. Gilson, this is the nature of those who are living the Reality of their Being, which is the Reality of God, which is the Reality of Life. The whole purpose has already been fulfilled, or that's the whole purpose. I don't know if that makes sense.
Gilson – Master, it makes a lot of sense and it's [like] taking a backpack of stones off the back, because for me the whole purpose and mission thing have always been very heavy, and it's caused me a lot of anguish, you know? Having a purpose, doing it and making it happen. Not to mention that within spirituality itself, within these studies, I had a very strong desire, which was also a purpose, to do God's will – “Thy will be done”– so any decision I made created a great anguish for me to be able to do God's will. And then the Master comes and takes this bag of stones off my back, with this freedom of “it is Life that lives”. In this story, “I” is nothing but a nuisance. The ego in this story is only this hindrance, it's only this movement of guilt, this movement of self-punishment, and eternal suffering, isn't it Master?
Master – We have an idea, Gilson, that we know. That's an idea, that's just a mental concept, that we know or that we can know God's will because books tell us, because other people teach us. That's something theoretical. You know God's Truth, and in that knowing God's Truth, which is to be in your Being, you know God's will. But it's not you and God. Your Being is Wisdom. Realize how fascinating that is, Gilson. Your Being is the whole God’s will, because your Being is God.
So, it's not about “someone” doing God's will, it's about this Being, who is God, who is Truth, Revealing Himself in Life, but there is no longer a separate “I” element. See how this has been shown to us, from a philosophical, spiritual, and religious point of view in a very mistaken way, because they tell us that you are going to do God's will, so you have yourself as an instrument and you have God as the source or as the one to whom you must serve.
Reality is something else. Reality is that you are an illusion, and God's Reality is odd, is unique, is singular. This Truth of God does not give His Glory – this is also in the Scriptures – to anyone, because there is no “someone,” there is only this Divine Reality. This Divine Reality, when it is in action – and It is in action when the “I”, the ego, is not – there is only this Will being done. So, the Truth is that there is only God in His Grace, in His Truth Revealing Himself.
When the sense of an “I”, of a separate identity, sets out to do something, no matter how doctrinally right it is, no matter how scriptural that doing is, with the idea that it's doing the right thing, it's still there doing it. So, it's always the sense of “I” in doing something, even something that some say is God's will, even something that the Scriptures say is God's will, but there is the “I” involved in that doing, and if there is the “I” involved, that doing is still an egocentric doing.
So, look: people want to love, they want to serve, they want to help. Why not let Life do that? Why not give up this sense of an “I” present in doing, allowing Life to happen without the sense of a “someone” present in doing? So, yes, at that moment, Life is Revealing Itself. Life Revealing Itself is the Divine Will, it is God's Will Revealing Itself; and this is possible when the ego is not present. Otherwise, Gilson, we are trying to adjust the life of the “I”, the life of the ego, to this Divine Will.
First, we don't know the Reality of the Divine, nor do we identify the illusion of this “I.” So, we don't know the truth about this “I,” nor the Reality about the Divine, and we remain in this psychological condition, dazed, full of ideas, beliefs, and thoughts. This generates fear, it generates guilt, it creates purposes and desires that are still merely self-centered, disguised as altruism, as a philanthropic movement, as a charitable movement, as a so-called “love-your-neighbor” movement, and it's all within the same confusion, within the same illusion. We need to discover the Truth of this Being. Assuming the Truth of this Being is the only Divine Will, the only Reality. Taking on the Truth of this Being does everything.
I would say, Gilson, that the only thing here in Life is to live God's Reality. That's the only thing we have to accept. To assume the Truth that God is the only Reality and that this sense of an “I” is an illusion; and this is possible when we investigate the nature of the “I.” So, it's up to us to investigate the nature of this illusion. When we investigate it, we put an end to this illusion. This very awareness of the Presence of Truth puts an end to illusion, then the Reality of God, which is already here, reveals itself.
Gilson – Master, we have a question here from a channel subscriber on this topic, from Eliel Gonçalves. He asks the following question: “Master, what is the Universe's purpose for us?”
Master – There is no such thing as “for us.” And what we call the “Universe” is what thought says is out there. It's something very “subtle.” I would say “subtle,” “delicate,” like an elephant's paw. In fact, there's nothing subtle about it at all. This movement of the intellect in us is very gross, it creates a universe out there and the idea of an “I” present here separating itself. Here is duality, here is separation, here is the basis of confusion.
So, what is the purpose of this Universe with us? A single Reality is present, It is beyond the known, so what we call the Universe, what we call “I” or “we” are intellectual conceptions. We have the idea of “someone” present seeing the Universe; seeing the Universe and believing that there is a relationship between this “I” and the Universe. All this is within the merely mental concept, this is within this dream of being “someone” in the world, the world being the Universe, and this “someone” being “someone” present in all this appearance. Whereas, in reality, it's all part of one big dream.
Within a projection of the intellect, there is this “me and the world,” “me and the Universe,” but this is within this dream of being “someone.” When we investigate the nature of this “I,” we discover that these so-called “world” or “Universe” is part of this dream of the “I.” When we investigate the nature of this “me,” we discover the illusion of this sense of separation between “me and the Universe,” “me and Life,” “me and God.” Then, Truth is revealed, which is the Truth of God, the only Reality present, and this dream of separation ends, and this illusion, this projection of relation ends, and this whole idea of what seems to be or what should be ends.
Reality, Gilson, is the Reality of Being. When we realize the Truth of this, which is the simple realization that the only Reality present is not the reality of the “I,” when there is a full awareness of this, this dream of “me and the world,” “me and the other,” “me and Life,” “me and the Universe,” “us and the Universe,” all this falls apart. So, I would say that, yes, this is the only purpose. Life is assumed, Life is seen for what it IS when the “I” is not there.
Gilson – Master, it's indescribable and unique when in Satsang, in your presence, in this sharing of the Master's Presence, this vision that the Master has of this Life happening without anything to be altered, changed, comes, it's seen from here too. Because I had a very strong anguish about making things happen, which really made me feel many times; about helping those in need, things like that, you know? And then the Master brings this vision that is far from what... it's even difficult to put it into words. It's not that we can't help, we can help, but it's another vision, where there's no longer that anguish, that suffering that was there.
Master – It's because there's actually a burden in this egoic identity. The ego sees itself in duty, in obligation, in guilt. Sometimes it sees itself as so acknowledged and so privileged that it feels guilty if it doesn't privilege, if it doesn't serve, if it doesn't try to help. This is a burden.
We have the illusion of self-importance, self-importance when we are ignored or when we are acknowledged. These are aspects of the ego. When it sees itself ignored, it is offended, when it sees itself despised, it is hurt, and when it sees itself loved, accepted, and recognized, it still sees itself as someone special, important.
So, it's typical of the ego's nature to see itself as “someone” within the experience. And when you see yourself as “someone” within the experience, you always look out into the world and see others also living their lives. So, you have a life and you see others having their own life, and you see yourself as “someone” who can attend to, who can help, or who needs to get rid of, or get away from. So, there is always an internal movement of identity that separates itself, which is the ego, from the experience of seeing oneself as important or unimportant, with a duty to help or with no duty at all, but there is always an implication present, the implication of an identity that separates itself in Life.
When the ego is not there, there is no more of that; there is Life happening and there is something indescribable present now, which is Life in everything, in everyone. But there is no longer this specialism, there is no longer this sense of an “I” protecting itself, defending itself, or attacking, trying to do something, careless of doing or careless of attending to. There is no longer this movement, because the Presence of Being is Love, is Consciousness, is Truth, is Intelligence.
So, Life moves, things happen, but there's no “someone” being charitable, “someone” being kind, “someone” trying to protect oneself, or “someone” trying to serve. It's a natural flow, it's Life moving without the sense of “someone.” This is something, Gilson, that the intellect can't reach, because the movement of the intellect, as it is a conditioned and programmed movement within an egocentric action, that is, based on a center that is always in a movement of doing or not doing, of liking or not liking, of irresponsibility or responsibility, then this is something unknown, because the movement of the intellect is this.
So, it's something simple, but it requires a direct understanding from an experience of this ego-free State. The good news here is that as you begin to work on this in Satsang, in these meetings, you begin to have a clarity that this really is the Truth, because you are disappearing and yet actions are happening, but with no more of this burden of egoic identity in guilt, fear, remorse, regret, or else in vainglory, vanity, in the sense of altruism. All this is undone, all this disappears when action takes place without the sense of the “I,” without the sense of the ego. This subject of non-egocentric action is fascinating. The understanding of the ego-free action, the understanding that there is only Life moving, there is only Life happening, but there is no more so-and-so, there is no more person.
Gilson– Master, I have one more question here – so we can finish our videocast – from Fernando Moreira Silva. He asks: “But then I have to realize that I don't exist. Won't that cause a lack of personality?”
Master – Gilson, the idea of a personality is a belief. When we say: “This won't cause a lack of personality,” this personality that you believe to exist is a set of memories, it's a set of beliefs.
When you say: “It won't cause a lack of personality,” what personality are you talking about? What we have when there is an end to the illusion of the sense of ego-identity, what we have now is the end of a psychological memory, conditioned, attached to the ideological movement of someone present moving, that's what disappears. This has nothing to do with the Reality of That which is the Truth of Being.
This sense of person or personality is an illusion, it's a fraud, there's no reality to it, it's a thought about someone present; it's actually a big prison. The end of the sense of the “I,” of the ego, or of this sense of person is the end of this set of psychological memories sustaining this sense of someone present in this instant, in living, in life. That's what falls apart.
That's the only illusion. The end to it is Love, it's Freedom, it's Happiness, it's Something Indescribable, it's the Reality of Being. This Reality of Being is not something within this sense of an “I,” it is not something within this sense of the ego. When that “I,” when that ego is no longer present, that Reality is Present, and that Reality is pure Intelligence, Real Truth, Real Happiness. That's it.
Gilson – Master, thanks for another videocast, we've reached our time.
