GC: Hello, everyone! We're here for another videocast. Again, Master Gualberto is here with us. Gratitude, Master, for your presence.
Master, today I am going to read an excerpt from Joel Goldsmith's book called “Consciousness transformed.” In this book, Joel makes the following comment: “In our human existence, we are states and stages of consciousness, or degrees of consciousness. In its pure state, Consciousness is God, and in its pure state, it constitutes our Being.” Master, what is your view on this matter? How can we evolve spiritually?
MG: Gilson, this is, if not the biggest, one of the biggest confusions that we have within this mistaken vision that we have built about the Truth that we are, the Truth that we carry. We do not know the Reality of That which we are, that is why we have theories, ideas, and beliefs about this. We see ourselves as people or entities present within time and space. If we are in time and space as true people or entities, carrying a real “I” that we can call “soul” or “spirit,” or give any name to this entity, the belief is that we need to evolve, we have to evolve. But who is this element that evolves, that needs to evolve?
Gilson, there is no Truth of the Revelation of That which we truly are, which is this Divine Reality. And this Divine Reality, which is God present, is not in space, is not in time, and, therefore, does not evolve. We do not need to evolve! Who would be in this process of evolution? This element, which is the “I,” the ego, this “me,” this present entity, is a fallacy, it has no reality. The truth about this “I” is that it is nothing more than a set of memories, remembrances, recollections, reactive responses that come from the past.
This model of being someone is a model of belief, thought, feeling, present in each one of us, due to a conditioning that we have received. We believe and feel this, and, therefore, we trust this illusion. There is no “someone” present here, there is only the idea of “someone” present. When a thought arises, or a feeling, emotion, or sensation, this is something that occurs in this mechanism, in this psychophysical organism, and this is a reaction of the brain, a reaction of brain response of memory, in this mechanism. It is not the presence of “someone,” it is the conditioning of this machine, of this mechanism. Reality is present, yes, beyond this, but this Reality is the Nature of this Being, which is beyond this body and this mind, and, naturally, beyond these reactions, but we are unaware of That.
Here, it is not about evolving, but about becoming aware of this Reality. The awareness of this Divine Reality that we are, beyond the body and the mind, beyond this brain with its reactions and this body with its expressions, the Truth about this is Liberation, it is the end of illusion. It is not someone who has evolved, it is exactly the end of this illusion of this “someone” and, therefore, of this model of egocentric identity, which moves through life, in this existence, centered on itself, self-interested, producing problems in the world and for itself.
Our condition, Gilson, psychological, of life and existence in this egoic identity, which is the identity of the “I,” is one of problems, conflicts, dilemmas, suffering. Here, it is about discarding this psychological condition, this sense of “I,” of the ego, and this is Liberation, this is the Truth of the Awareness of God.
The point is that this entire condition of life as we know it, in this old and ancient format, is the condition of sleep, of dream, of unconsciousness. Thus, human beings live in this condition, because they do not know themselves. So, this whole idea of evolution and development… When we look at a tree, we see a tree actually evolving. It stops being a small plant and becomes a huge tree. When we look at nature, we do see this whole process of evolution. From a biological, physiological point of view, we perceive the changes, the transformations. From a physical, biological, botanical point of view, when we look at a plant, we see it grow. From a very young age to adulthood, it grows, it evolves. A child, before, was a baby, became an adult. So, there was a biological evolution, changes occurred in that structure, in that child. From a psychophysical point of view, we go through changes and we can, in fact, evolve, grow, change, but from the point of view of Reality, of That which we essentially are, there is no such thing. Divine Nature is the Nature of God within us, and this is the only Reality present in all manifestations, and this does not evolve!
Liberation – I want to emphasize this here –, the Truth of God’s Revelation is the Awareness of God in God, with God and for God. That which is You in your Being is complete, unique, singular, and does not carry this psychological condition that we know, within the identity of the “I,” in this egoic identity. You, in your Being, are Love, Intelligence, Peace, Happiness, Grace, Freedom. You are this! Prior to any appearance of notions, such as time and space, where this entire program of psychophysical evolution of this mechanism, of this organism, is processed.
Becoming aware of your Divine Reality is discovering Reality outside of the known, therefore outside of time and space. It is the Nature of your Being; it is the Nature of God! So, what we are dealing with here is precisely to nullify the illusion of this psychological time. You see, psychophysical evolution occurs in this chronological time, but we also carry, outside of this chronological time, the psychological illusion of time. This is a subject that we have explored a lot with you on the channel. This psychological notion of time is what gives you the mistaken idea of “someone” present here and now, who lived the past, who is living this present and is moving towards the future. This is where our illusion of becoming, of achieving, of “coming to be” arises. This is within this psychological confusion of the ego, this notion of psychological time.
When someone touches on this issue of evolution, they are invariably touching on this model of psychological time, on the belief in this “becoming,” this “coming to be,” this “achieving” something. And here, in the realm of spirituality, it is about becoming spiritual, about evolving spiritually. See, this is the great confusion, because this whole psychological movement of time is the movement of the ego, it is still the movement of the “I.” Here, Liberation in this life, the Realization of Divine Truth, Enlightenment or Awakening, whatever we want to call This, is exactly the end of this model of psychological time, of this “becoming” or “ceasing to be,” of this “achieving” something or “getting rid of” something.
You, in your Real Nature, do not have to get rid of anything or achieve anything. Your Real Nature is not in this time, and this psychological time is an invention of thought. It is thought that has created this idea of becoming, of achieving, of coming to be, also of getting rid of. All this disappears when illusion ends, when the illusion of this psychological time ends. So, from a psychophysical point of view, changes are present in this mechanism, in this organism, in this so-called “human” body, but from a real point of view, within a perspective of Divine Reality, You are Real Consciousness, You are Love, You are Happiness, You are the Reality of God!
In fact, there is no you and God, there is only God present. This entire psychophysical structure is only within this divine dream, but that is not you. This is what God Realization reveals, this is what Enlightenment presents here, at this moment: your Natural State of Being, beyond time and space, beyond the body, the mind, and the world, beyond this whole illusion of psychological time. So, here we have this notion of time and space as part of a divine dream, we have this psychological time created by the psychological model of the ego, in this format of human cultural conditioning, where thought has constructed this model of time, which is a fallacy, an illusion. Naturally, this time, since it has no reality, is something that is not present in your Natural State of Being. So, it is not, notice, it is not evolution; it is the awareness of the end of this psychological time that we actually need.
As for this whole process of evolution in nature, this is a matter for nature, but it has nothing to do with what You are in your Real Nature, since your Real Nature is beyond the illusion of this psychological time and this chronological time.
So, Gilson, it is essential that we have a new approach to all of this, and we have to discard this whole model of beliefs that we were taught within this pattern or this format of philosophical, religious, psychological, humanist teaching. We need to go beyond all of this, we need to discover the Reality of That which is here and now, beyond the “I,” beyond the ego. Okay?
GC: Master, I had a very strong idea of evolution, of spiritual growth. Especially because it is often said within spirituality that we must evolve, always with this idea of “becoming.” And only in Satsang, which are these encounters that the Master provides, only by getting closer to this work with you, Master, that I was able to realize how much this idea of becoming, of coming to be something in the future, different from what I am today, is just a thought, it is just a thought that leads to time, that leads to this idea of always becoming something.
MG: Yes, Gilson, everything that the ego has done in this model of thought – because it is what sustains its continuity – is to try to sustain itself, to maintain itself in this creation of a means of transportation for its journey. See, this means of transportation for the ego's journey is psychological time, and this psychological time is, in fact, a construct of thought. Look at yourself and you will realize this. How simple it is to have an intellectual approach to this at first. It is clear that we have to go beyond this intellectual vision to a Real, Direct Understanding, but notice that thought within you is what tells you what happened. Without a thought here, at this moment, you do not know what happened. You know what happened because thought tells you what happened. And one detail: what it tells you about what happened is its interpretation, in this memory that it brings of what happened or supposedly happened.
So, it is thought that tells us about the past. There is no past here and now, just as there is no future here and now, but thought speaks of a future. So, it projects a future based on the images that it forms; that is what thought does. Thought creates the past, because there is no past here. It creates the past based on the memory of what happened or supposedly happened – notice how delicate this is – and it creates the future based on what it imagines that could happen, what could arise. See, we are faced with a lie. All that thought does inside you is telling stories, and these stories are always based on a past that it imagines and a future that it idealizes. So, it imagines the future and imagines the past.
Basically, thought is constructing this psychological time. Notice how important it is for us to have a direct approach to this here. You are not living in this moment, because at this moment the sense of “I” is not there, but it enters, in this format of thought, and says that it is here and now, coming from the past and moving towards the future. See, there is no “I” here and now, it is just thought telling us about someone here, giving itself a pronoun. So, thought gives itself a pronoun, it calls itself “I,” and tells a story of this “I” based on a memory that it brings. But who is “it”?
All of this is within a game, which is the game of thought. So, this notion of psychological time – yesterday, today and tomorrow – is not real, but that is how we are living. We need to strip ourselves of it, let go of it, get rid of it, go beyond it, for the Awareness of Reality, which is the Reality of God, here and now, which is the Nature of your Being, which is the Nature of Truth.
I usually ask people: “Does this make sense?” Look, Gilson, I ask these questions, but it’s so simple! In reality, if you look closely, it’s the only thing that makes sense! This idea of being someone is a thought! And this concept of having lived yesterday as someone and living today as someone and moving towards living as someone tomorrow, that’s a thought! There is no reality, but because we live within this set of ideas and beliefs that thought establishes, supporting this notion of psychological time, we live within an illusion, and in this illusion, there is the sufferer with his suffering, the fearful one with his fear, the angry one with his anger, anxiety with the anxious one, depression with the depressed one, and so on. Okay? And this is the life of the ego, and this is the life of the “I.”
GC: Master, we have a question about this topic, which was asked on the channel. The question is the following: “I have always studied that I need to evolve spiritually. So, is it just a matter of the ego wanting to evolve?”
MG: So… we just saw this here, didn’t we? Who is this element in us that wants to evolve, that seeks to evolve, that needs to evolve, that has this idea of “I was,” “I am,” and “I will be”? Or “I’m not good enough, but I need to become a better person, I need to evolve?” “I wasn’t a good person, I’m not being a good person yet, but if I evolve, I will become a good person.” For whom is this notion of person? What is this sense of “I” present here? Notice, we are dealing with thoughts. Everything you have about who you are is a set of remembrances, recollections, memories, images. It is in this sense that the “I,” the ego, thinks about changes. When its condition is unfavorable and it is unhappy with its memories, recollections and remembrances, it thinks about evolving to feel better, happier and more fulfilled, but all of this consists of a mere movement of thought, something that comes from the past, giving the suggestion of a future for this “someone” to become a better person, to achieve a more excellent status or state of being someone. All of this is within thought.
Note that everything is a great game of thought itself to maintain its continuity, which is the egoic continuity. Even a better person continues to be a person, and a person suffers, a person has problems, a person still has something to achieve and things that one has to get rid of, and this never ends, because the sense of the thinker, which is actually thought itself, which is the ego, which is the experiencer, which is the “I,” continues to be present. Here, the Truth of That which is You in your Being is not part of this, it is something beyond all of this, it does not know such a thing as a “someone” present. Everything you have about you at this moment is discarded when the Reality of this Being, which is You in your True Nature, flourishes. And if That is present… That is beyond, as has already been said, beyond time and space, therefore beyond this idea or need idealized by thought to evolve. Okay?
