Awakening of Consciousness. The consciousness of “I.” Mandukya Upanishad and the four states. Turiya

Here in the channel, we are working with you on the Truth of God-Realization, what some call Spiritual Enlightenment or the Awakening of Consciousness, and that is a new way of living, a new way of living; a way of living free from contradiction, conflict and all that suffering that we know as human beings within this “our life” – as we call it – this life of relationship with the world, with people, and also with ourselves. Everything here starts exactly in this duality, which is the mistaken principle of “I,” the feeling of a separate existence, of “someone” present within life having “your own life.” This is what we are questioning with you.

We are trying to show you, through these videos, and we also have online meetings – later we will put for you here in the description of the video our group on WhatsApp –, we have face-to-face meetings and we have retreats as well, and all of this has the purpose of investigating the Truth about who we are. Our work here offers a vision of the Reality about who we are. What is the truth about our own Being? What is the truth about our Real Nature, what we truly are?

I want to work with you over the next few minutes on this idea of consciousness that we have. You see yourself as someone who is conscious of life, conscious of the world. Now, what is this consciousness? Notice a very interesting thing here when we deal with this issue of consciousness: for us what is “being conscious"? We believe that we are conscious, but what is this “being conscious” basically? It is being conscious of something. This self-consciousness is the awareness of oneself in a relationship with experience. So, it’s very simple, I say I am conscious because “I am” and “you are,” “I am this and I have before me this other thing,” so there is always a duality in this so-called “consciousness.” I am the subject and that over there or that other thing is the object, so I am always in this vision of being conscious because I carry this “I” as being the subject and that of which I am conscious, that is why I say: “I am conscious” or “I know that I am conscious”; but “I am conscious” like this, “I am conscious” of something, “I am conscious,” even, of “myself.”

In deep sleep we have no such notion of “being conscious,” so we confuse the Reality of what I have been calling here on the channel Pure Consciousness, the Truth of Consciousness or Real Consciousness with simply “being conscious.” “Being conscious” is “me” conscious of the world, of the other, of life, of objects, of experiences, and this does not occur in deep sleep. When you are in deep sleep, there is no world, there is no body, there is no “other,” there is no “I,” and yet Something remains unchanged. In the morning, when you wake up, you realize that you are the same here awake and once again in this “being conscious” of the world. However, in deep sleep you have remained in some form and this form is the Reality of Consciousness. A Consciousness that is present in deep sleep, is present, also, here and now, and present in the dream that you have at night; while sleeping you have a dream and, also, there is this Consciousness, but this Consciousness is Something that is surpassing this deep sleep, this waking state and this dream.

So, what is the Truth about who we are? It is the Truth of that Pure Consciousness. It is not about “being aware,” “I am aware of you,” “I am aware of the world,” “I am aware of these experiences,” “I am aware of speaking,” “I am aware now of listening,” it is not about this experience, because this experience occurs in this “being conscious.” Here, the Truth of your Being, of this Pure Consciousness, goes beyond this state of “being conscious,” of “being aware,” of “coming to be.” So, the notion of “I was, I am and I will be” is within this “being conscious.” This consciousness I have called the consciousness of the “I,” this is the consciousness that we know.

Here, when we deal with you with the Liberation from the contradiction, the suffering and the illusion of this world, we are talking about this world of “I am, I was, I will be,” this world where you can say “I am conscious.” We are here and now dealing with Something that transcends this condition. All our psychological condition of being “someone” in the world, this psychosomatic being that we show ourselves to be in our life, in our experiences, in this perception of “being conscious” of the world, in our relationships with people, with objects, places, and situations, all this takes place within a condition, still, of unconsciousness that we call “consciousness.” Here the challenge is to realize that all human problems, all our suffering as human beings, lie exactly in this unconsciousness or in this condition of “being conscious,” as we believe we are living our lives, as a person separate from the other, as “someone” separate from the world, separate from objects, separate from life, this is the condition of this consciousness of the “I.” This quality is the quality of consciousness that we have, the consciousness of the ‘I’, in this mind which is the particular mind of this identity that we believe ourselves to be. This mind I have called the egoic mind, living within this consciousness which is the consciousness of “I” and which, also, I have called mental consciousness. Here I want to investigate with you the illusion of that consciousness.

Note that our actions are born out of a background of stored experiences, of memories, of recollections. We are responding to the experience of life based on the knowledge that we bring, this is what we call “being conscious.” If I recognize an object, if I recognize a person, if I recognize an experience, if I recognize a place, it is because this is something that is part of this memory record, so this so-called “consciousness” that I have in this experience is a mental consciousness, it is a consciousness that fits into this condition of memory recognition. Everything about us is based on that memory, our whole human experience is based on memory. We are, as human creatures, the result of memory, all human experience, all human knowledge, everything that has been stored over millennia is part of the information that we carry in us today, this structure of body and mind, as a presence of memory. Everything you have about who you are, is memory knowledge. Your body is a memory of your parents, your grandparents, your great-grandparents, it is their memory. Your whole body represents a memory and this biological memory is the memory of your ancestors, so your body is an inheritance of memory and your whole psychological formation is also an inheritance of memory, of memory of the human race, of human culture, of humanity, beyond this particular and personal memory of these last thirty, forty, fifty years – these years of life that you have. All this has given you a background of experience, knowledge, and memory.

So, when you refer to yourself as “somebody,” you are talking about “somebody” who is just a memory – a biological memory and a psychological memory. When you say that you are conscious or when we talk here about this consciousness that we have, we are just referring to this idea, this concept of being conscious, which is a recognition of memory. When there’s no memory, there is no consciousness, that’s what happens in deep sleep, that’s what happens when you don't have a particular memory of something. When you have no memory, you have no consciousness, and note that it is a personal, particular consciousness, linked to a formation that was acquired by the brain. It is the brain that has recorded all this memory, it is the brain that has all this memory, so what we call consciousness is nothing but memory. Your whole consciousness of the world is a consciousness of memory, and this consciousness is the consciousness of the “I.”

Here, what I want to tell you is that this is not the Truth about Consciousness. This is not the Truth about you, it is not the Truth about your Real Consciousness. The Real Consciousness is not particular and personal to this “me.” That “me” is a set of memories, a set of recollections. This “I” has no consciousness, this “I” is memory, this “I” is just knowledge acquired, an experience acquired, a memory, a recollection in this brain, in this body-mind. So, when you use the pronoun “I” referring to yourself present, you are just speaking from a memory and describing a memory. When you talk about who you are, when you tell your story, starting with your own name, your age, your address, when you talk about your ancestors, all you have are recollections, images, remembrances, and memories. That is not the Truth of the Reality of your Being, of that Real Consciousness, of that Real Presence.

This new way of living, this new way of living is the living free of this consciousness of the “I,” this egoic mind, this condition of a present entity, of a present identity within this experience, which is an illusion. So, this is the Awakening of your Real Divine Nature. In the Upanishads, the Indian Sages tell us about four states, and I have just spoken about three of them now, here. We know, yes, three states in this, so-called “human life,” “life of man,” “life of the human being.” We know the waking state, that state which, apparently, we are conscious of, but in reality, as it was put, there is only this “being conscious.” We have the dream state: when at night we sleep, we live in the dream world a whole dream experience and when we wake up or come out of that dream state into the waking state, we realize that it was just a dream, however, that was very real, very true, and while everything there was happening, you really saw yourself in that life, in that context, in that story and you felt yourself fully conscious, in that “being conscious,” as you do here and now. When you wake up, you realize that it was just a production of the mind, a set of images, remembrances, and memories. There were people, objects, places, sensations, perceptions, thoughts, and also feelings, all kinds of experiences of dream life, which is a life of sleep, which is a life in sleep, which is a life in a dream. Now we have here, in this waking state, something like that, perhaps a little bit clearer and apparently more convincing that this life is real, that we really are conscious, and in fact we're facing just another state, which is the waking state. And then we have the state of deep sleep. In the Mandukya Upanishads we have three states and a fourth state. So, in the Mandukya Upanishads it talks about these four states: waking, dream, deep sleep, and the Turiya State. Here it is about your Natural State of Pure Being, Consciousness, and Presence. Your Natural Real State of Being is not wakefulness, not dream, not deep sleep, it is the State of Turiya, in it there is Real Consciousness, not this particular consciousness of “I” where there is this principle of separation, of duality, where there is “you and the other,” “you and life,” “you and the world.”

All the psychological suffering of the human being – anxiety, fear, anguish, despair, guilt, the contradiction of desires – all the psychological disorder of the human being, all the inner confusion in which he lives, in which he finds himself, all the psychological suffering is something that is present because of this condition of unconsciousness that we call “consciousness” in this waking state. Real Consciousness is the State of Turiya, it is the Awakening to your True Divine Nature, to That which is you. The human being spends thirty, forty, seventy, eighty years of his life living from wakefulness to dream, from dream to deep sleep, from wakefulness to deep sleep, from deep sleep to dream; he lives these three states and does not recognize the Truth of his Natural State which is beyond these three states and which, paradoxically, is the True State of his Self. That which is innate in each one of us is that Natural State, the State of Turiya.

The Awakening of Consciousness, Spiritual Enlightenment is to assume this Truth, the Truth that you are this Presence, this Consciousness, this is the end of the illusion of being born, growing up, and dying. This is Something that is beyond birth and death, beyond waking, dreaming, and deep sleep, beyond this “being conscious,” beyond this condition of “I” consciousness, of the egoic consciousness, of egoic mind. We are functioning in this waking state within a conditioning of culture, of society, of the world, a conditioning of behavior, actions, movements, reactions, reactive responses to experiences Besides this physical conditioning that we have, of behavior, of practices, of skills that we learn from each other, we have a conditioning which is the psychological conditioning and in this conditioning we are living in the same patterns as humanity for millennia: envy, jealousy, the feeling of possession, the search for power, desire, as I said just now, all the contradiction present within desires and ambition that needs to be investigated. There are internal states in us of chaotic deep confusion, there is a psychological disorder present in our life, in our living. Our relationship with the external world, based on this conflict, this contradiction, and this internal suffering that we bring within ourselves, in this format of existential pain, existential emptiness, all this is reflected in our relationships, and this is present due to this psychological conditioning, this pattern of inheritance that we inherit from this world, that we inherit from this culture, that we have inherited from this society. So, the Awakening of Truth, which is the Awakening of Real Consciousness, is the Awakening of that Natural Divine State which is the State of Turiya, the Truth of God, the Realization of God.

That’s the subject that we delve into here on the channel. We have several playlists here on the channel. The videos are in the format of playlists where you can deepen this, investigate this, discover what it is to live this Natural State of Meditation. It is not a practice of meditation, but the deepening of the Revelation of True Meditation in a practical way, so the awareness of Real Consciousness is possible, because this consciousness of the “I” is thus emptied of all this content of psychological conditioning, and Something new, Unknown arises at that moment. So, this blossoming of the Truth of your Being, the Revelation of your Divine Nature, the settling of this Natural State, which is the State of Turyia, the fourth State, is something possible for you. This is one of the subjects that we work with you here on the channel, basically deepening themes in this direction, in the direction of the Awakening of Consciousness, the Awakening of the Truth of your Being. Okay?

If this is something that makes sense to you, I want to remind you that we have online meetings, we have in-person meetings, and we also have retreats where we work on this with you. Here in the description of the video we have our WhatsApp link so you can get closer to this work and know what’s going on. Okay?

If this is something that makes sense to you, we'll see each other. Thanks for the meeting and here’s the invitation. See you next time!
