People often ask: “How do I deal with fear? Or how to deal with jealousy? How to deal with jealousy and insecurity? How do I deal with suffering?” So, look: these are questions related to the internal movement of the “I” itself, the internal movement of the ego. We want to discover a formula, in the ego, in the “I,” to deal with the ego, with the “I.” You see the trick: people aren't looking for Truth, they're looking for solutions to problems. So, I want to talk to you today about how to really solve these problems. We don't have to focus on the issue of the search for the solution itself, but rather the Understanding of the Truth. Look at what we're putting here: it's the Understanding of the truth of the problem that makes the problem dissolve, makes the problem disappear.
What we've had so far in these alternatives for dealing with fear, dealing with jealousy, with insecurity, with suffering... what we've had so far are palliative forms of solutions that aren't real solutions. They're not real solutions because they're not definitive, because we're dealing on the same level as the ego, with the ego; we're dealing with the problem, with the problem. This is about investigating the nature, the structure of the problem. Of course, we can't do this by getting away from it, but by getting closer to it. But we can't deal with the problem at the level of the problem, we have to deal with the problem at the level of investigating what the problem represents, what the problem is. What is this element present in the problem, which sustains the problem as truly being a problem?
That's what we're investigating here with you. We're telling you that, in this channel, we're working with you on the end of problems. That's right, the end of problems. However, the purpose of this channel is the comprehension of the element that makes these problems present and that, at most, provides formulas or palliative methods to deal with; whereas looking closely, investigating the nature, the structure, the fundamental element of this problem, is the end of it. And when we use the expression “problem” in the singular, we are saying that we do have a problem. Of course, we have countless problems, of all kinds, but all these problems are based on a single problem. The problem is the problem of the “I,” of the ego.
Human beings are looking for solutions to problems. Here, we are investigating the nature of the human being, of this so-called “human being,” because, basically, the human being's life consists of problems. However, look at what we're about to say: we can't go on in life with problems, but how can we solve these issues, these so-called “problems,” without solving the basic problem which is the human problem, of this human being? We need to have a life free of problems, but first we need to discover what a life free of this so-called “human being” is, this “me,” this “I,” this ego. The sense of someone present is the problem! It's the problem that sustains all the various problems we have in life.
So, if you have a question: “How to deal with fear, how to overcome fear?,” note the question: “How to overcome fear?” We have to investigate the nature of the one who is in fear. Who is the one in fear? It is the human being. What is the human being? How does the mind work? What is this “I”? Note that fear is something that is always present in a relationship with something. You can only be afraid of something. Fear itself, fear in itself, is not real. There is no fear in itself, there is no fear except fear of something. And how does this fear work? Understanding how fear works is understanding the element that makes fear present. This element is the thinker, it's the experiencer... It's the one who is present in feeling, it's the one who is present in the relationship. So, we're talking about the “I,” this “me.”
So, what is a human being? It is this psychosomatic being, which carries this sense of present identity. Within a given experience, it is that element that separates itself as the experiencer of the experience. Let's look at this carefully. For example, a present thought... It's present! It's a present thought, but there's an element – that element is the thinker. At least that's how we see ourselves within the experience of thinking; there is no thinking without the thinker. So, the movement of thinking requires the presence of the thinker with its thinking. This thinking is present when the thinker, with its thought, is present. At least that's the model we know of thinking. When a feeling is present, there is the one who is in the feeling, with that given feeling. When anger is present, there is the one who is involved in the anger. Thus, in anger, we have the angrier; in fear, the fearful; in thought, the thinker; in experience, the experiencer.
So, what do we have? Separation, a duality is present; this duality sustains the experience. The experience here is fear, so the fearful one is here. Experience here is thought, so the thinker is here. We always have two things present within the idea of experience. So, this is the cause, the root, the basic reason for human problems, for human suffering. It's the basic root, therefore, of fear, jealousy, insecurity, envy, desire, and conflicts. It is always the sense of separation, of duality present. Are you with me? The end of this psychological condition of being, of this psychophysical being – the end of this psychological condition, of this being someone within thought, experience, sensation, perception – the end of this duality is the end of fear, the end of insecurity, the end of anxiety, the end of suffering. So, we have the end of the “I,” the end of the ego.
The direct understanding of this, not the intellectual understanding – you can read this somewhere, you can listen to a speech like this and repeat it... That's intellectual! – the direct understanding of this is what the sages – I'm referring to this experiential understanding of this, this non-duality, this absence of thought, which is the experience with its thinker, this absence of emotion with the element that got emotional... the absence of anger with the angry one; the absence of jealousy with the jealous one; the absence of fear and the one in fear, which is the fearful one – the absence of this, the direct experience of this absence, the sages in India call it Advaita, non-duality. Non-duality, which is Advaita, is the Presence of a Reality outside of the “I,” outside of the ego, outside of this sense of separation and, therefore, free of these problems.
So, you see: here we are offering you the possibility of a truly free life. A life where the Presence of the Reality that is Divine Reality, of this non-separation, this non-duality, is That which is present. Your Natural State of Being, your True State of Being, is not something that is within time. Yes, I'm referring to that psychological time, which is where this “I” resides. The “I,” the sense of someone present, is only the sense of someone present because it carries the idea of coming from the past and going into the future. That's the presence of time! So, the presence of thought is the presence of time, because it is thought that, in memory, gives you the idea of someone here, who has come from the past and is going into the future. This sense of someone present is thought; this thought is the presence of time. So, the time that thought constructs, idealizes, mobilizes, is only a psychological time. This psychological time is the imagination of a time created by thought.
Note how interesting it is to deepen this here. All our problems are present because of this model, which is why this investigation, this discovery, this realization is essential. Observing that every human problem is the problem of this “human being,” who is based on this model of thinking and feeling within this principle of duality, and that this is present because of thought. So, what is the truth about thought? What is thought? Thought is memory, recollection, it's remembrance! Thought is time, thought is the past. Realize that the whole movement of the “I,” of the ego, is something now, here. Every reference of being someone that you carry is something that comes from the past. And everything that comes from the past is memory, remembrance, and thought. So, as human beings, we are the result of a culture, a history, a humanity, a model of human being that comes from the past. We are continuing a model that comes from the past when we sustain this element which is the “I” element, ego, this sense of someone present, separating oneself from experience, whatever it may be.
Can we eliminate this from our lives? Can we find a quality of life that is totally different from this quality of life, beyond this sense of a particular “I,” of a present identity with its problems? Can we live free from fear, jealousy, envy, ambition, anger, violence... a life outside the known? The understanding of a life outside the known is not the mere recognition or knowledge of a life in continuity. We are facing something entirely new, foreign to this whole model of the brain we already know, which is a conditioned brain, within a program of human history, of identity that separates itself from life, from living, from every form of experience. So, Something is present, and that Something present is Divine Reality, it's God's Reality, it's the Reality that I've been calling “the Unknown,” “the Indescribable,” “the Unnameable.” A life free of contradictions, a life free of problems, a life free of suffering, where there is the Presence of Truth, the Presence of Divine Reality.
This approach to the truth, this study of ourselves, understanding how we work, how this mind works, how thought works – what is the truth of this model of duality, of separation – studying this, studying ourselves here, right now. Thus, we have the Truth of the Revelation of Self-Awareness. Note that the word Self-Awareness is used here in a different sense from what people generally use it out there. Here we are talking about the Understanding of this principle of separation, of duality, of illusory identity that is present when an experience is happening here. Becoming aware of this is Self-Awareness. To have a direct approach to this is to experience True Meditation in an experiential way, in a practical way. So, the Truth of Meditation is revealed when there is an understanding of this whole process of duality, of separation, of the experiencer with one’s experience, of the thinker with one’s thought... the one present in this feeling and what one is feeling. The vision of this, the Understanding of this is the Revelation of the Truth of your Being. This occurs when there is this Awareness of Self-Knowledge, when there is this approach to True Meditation in an experiential way, in a practical way.
