The observer, the thing observed. Psychological escape. Observe without the observer. Self-awareness

The purpose of these meetings is to bring us Real clarity about life – the life we take, the life we know, the life we are situated within. We need to be clear about the meaning of all this.

Dissatisfaction is common among us. Human beings carry within themselves an internal state of dissatisfaction, and this dissatisfaction has different expressions particular to each person, however, they are always present; and there is a search, there is a search for an end to this dissatisfaction. And here I want to talk to you about the futility of this search, this quest.

This may sound strange to you, because we were educated, within our culture, within our society, within our world – this is, in fact, an internal conditioning that we have, a psychological conditioning that we bring – to look for a solution to end this dissatisfaction by accomplishing things.

As the model of achievements that we know, in the physical, material, professional sphere or in several other areas known to us, is through effort, we believe that, also through effort, one day we will put an end to this internal, psychological condition of internal suffering, of psychological suffering, we will put an end to this dissatisfaction.

What we are saying here in these meetings is that this dissatisfaction is present due to this psychological background of inadequacy, inability, inability to deal with life. So, as long as we are maintaining for ourselves a way of perceiving life, the world, the other, ourselves within this principle of psychological conditioning, of psychological approach to existence, this dissatisfaction will continue to be present.

And this dissatisfaction is what for A, B or C has a specific meaning, has a certain meaning. One talks about the pain of loneliness, others talk about anguish, others talk about existential suffering or existential pain, depression, syndromes, fears. Everyone has a way of approaching this dissatisfaction with themselves. And one thing we've been doing is giving names to these internal states. They are, in fact, internal states of unhappiness, of incompleteness.

And why is this present? Our endeavor here, our interest here with you, is to deepen this, to discover the Real possibility of a life free from psychological suffering. This means a life free from all forms of psychological conditioning. So, what is this conditioning that sustains this suffering? It is the model of the social psychological structure in which we find ourselves.

We learned from our parents, grandparents, great-grandparents – from those who came before us – life through effort, the effort to achieve something, to obtain something. Effort always presupposes the desire to obtain, to achieve. We are dissatisfied now, here with who we are. We are not investigating who we are, but we have an ideal, a projection, an objective. That goal is, through effort, to achieve something different from what is present here.

What we have been saying to you here, what we have tried to investigate with you here is the value of comprehending dissatisfaction. Comprehending dissatisfaction at that moment is dealing with this state of dissatisfaction at that moment. Notice: this is when you can deal with the pain, not after the pain is gone, not before the pain arrives. It is when pain is present that we can deal with the pain, but we have not been doing so.

The way of dealing with suffering is completely wrong, because, culturally, we learn to escape suffering, to escape what makes us suffer at that moment. So, we replace this, which is this pain, this suffering, with something that can console us, comfort us, make us, temporarily, forget the pain.

So, it appears that we are free from pain and, in fact, we are somewhat numb from pain. So, there is no pain at the moment, because we are forgetting ourselves, and we do this as a mechanism, as a strategy, as a way of dealing with pain – a mistaken way of dealing with this suffering, with this dissatisfaction.

So, people engage in all forms of psychological escapes. They are alternatives to forgetting themselves, due to the pain, the dissatisfaction, this suffering now, manifesting itself at this moment. So, it is through effort that we want to achieve something different from that. We do not approach, for example, the suffering of envy.

Our behavior is curious. We are worried about the envy that others have of us, we do not realize that envy is something present in this psychological model of being “someone.” This human being that we are is envious. You say, “No, I don’t feel jealous.” Look closely at this and you will realize that, like any human being, psychologically – unless you are really free of this sense of “I,” of ego – you carry envy.

So, the envy that others have of me and the envy that I have of others are, basically, suffering. We don't know how to look at this here, at this instant. This is a cause of psychological suffering and dissatisfaction. So, thought has opinions about it, ideas about it and thus creates an ideal in the future to get rid of this psychological condition.

We believe that it is through effort that we will achieve the purpose of being free of this envy that we feel and this pain, also of envy, that the other causes for me, for this “I,” for this ego. So, we want to get rid of envy that the other feels towards me and we want to get rid of the envy that I feel towards the other through an idea, through a purpose, through an objective, through an effort. So, we have, because we have ideas about it, an ideal of freedom from envy or jealousy.

The pain is here, but “one day I will be free from jealousy, I will strive for that.” “I feel angry, but one day I will be free of anger, I will strive for that.” Here we need to figure out how to deal with this state in this moment, right now; with suffering now, with dissatisfaction now. This is what we have been talking about with you here, this is what we have explored with you in these meetings.

Discovering how we work at this moment is the great secret of going beyond this psychological condition of internal conditioning, of suffering, of fear, of envy, of jealousy, the issue of anger, of dissatisfaction. All that we are here and now, to become aware of it, to have an approach through Self-Awareness, recognize it without effort. It's not about wanting to do something with what comes up, but just being aware of it.

Notice how important it is to have a new approach to these psychological aspects that give us this dissatisfaction, which brings this dissatisfaction, which causes this dissatisfaction in us, this pain in us, this suffering in us. Dealing with it now, dealing with it in a Real way is looking, not with the ideal of becoming different, of getting rid of it in the future, of getting a new condition tomorrow for that; it is now.

The question is: How to look at this? In general, we are seeing it in ourselves, but we are not looking at it. There is a difference between seeing and looking. You see it from an idea, a belief, a concept. You see from a viewpoint of an opinion, a liking or disliking of what you see in yourself. This is the common way we have of seeing what is happening within us: we are seeing it. This seeing is not looking.

We are seeing it, we are seeing it and suffering from this, because we want to do something, because we have a different ideal for ourselves. “I cannot be envious, I cannot be jealous, I cannot be ambitious or greedy – religiously that is wrong. That’s not being spiritual, that’s not a moral thing.”

So, we have a look that is not a clear look, it is just a seeing, a seeing based on a concept, an idea, a model within a cultural formation of condemnation, of rejection. So we are always seeing it with condemnation, rejection or approval.

Either we condemn what we are seeing in ourselves or we justify it. Some people justify their aggression, their violence, they justify these forms of desires and fears; other people condemn this in themselves, and all of this is cultural, it is something learned within the cultural, religious, philosophical, spiritualist, and psychological vision.

So, we are always looking without actually being aware of what a clear look is, because we are always seeing from that seeing. It's like when I put on glasses and look at something: if the glasses are colored, it seems to me the same color as the glasses, the lenses of the glasses.

So, we have a specific way of approaching life that is completely wrong. It is possible to look, and this looking is to observe without the observer. It is possible to look, and this look, notice, is a look where the “I,” the ego, this “me,” this observer does not enter. So, it is possible for us to become aware of it through our eyes without “someone” involved in it. So, it's not about seeing, inspecting, condemning, rejecting. Here it is about looking without the “I.”

When you look without the “I,” there is a look without that “you”; and when that look is present, something new happens. If I come into direct contact with envy, without this “I,” this element that wants to get rid of envy or wants to justify envy does not enter. Then, a clear vision is shown of this psychological condition, which is a mere conditioning that comes from the past, which is a memory, it is just an experience being observed without the observer, without the “I,” without the ego.

This is the approach to Meditation, which is Self-Awareness, because it reveals the illusory nature of this center, which is the “I,” the ego. We can only deal with it in this instant, in this moment; It's not before, it's not after. So, what do we need in life? We need to discover how to get closer to ourselves, and that is Self-awareness. This is coming closer to the Truth about Meditation.

True Meditation is here and now, in this instant. You don't set aside a moment to observe the mind. Observation of the mind requires the presence of a gaze free from the observer. This has nothing to do with the posture of the body and a specific time to meditate, but it is now, moment by moment, when you become aware of the thinker, aware that thought is the thinker, when you become aware of the sufferer, realizing that this sufferer is suffering itself, when you become aware of the envious one knowing immediately that this envious one is envy itself, there is no separation.

And when there is no separation between the observer and the thing observed, the envious one and envy, jealousy and the jealous one, when this separation no longer exists, because there is this look, this simple and direct look, this psychological condition dissolves. This is the end of dissatisfaction, this is the end of suffering, this is the end of fear. Something new emerges. This new Something is present due to the flourishing of Real Meditation. Are you with me?

To have such an approach to life is to have an understanding of the beauty of life, without this center, which is the “I,” the ego. There is no dissatisfaction, there is no suffering. This is our work; this is our proposal here for you. We are investigating this in online meetings, which take place here on weekends. You can find our WhatsApp link here in the video description to participate in these meetings. In addition, we have face-to-face meetings and also retreats.
