Joel Goldsmith | The heart of mysticism | God in action | God's action | Master Gualberto

GC: Hello everyone! We are here for another videocast. Once again, Master Gualberto is with us! Gratitude, Master, for this opportunity.

Master, today I'm going to read an excerpt from Joel Goldsmith's book called “The heart of mysticism.” In this book, Joel, in this excerpt that I will read, says the following: “By achieving a conscious feeling of Presence, there is a guarantee of well-being or the ‘click’ that announces God in action. You have attained an atmosphere of Christ, fulfilling the thing that has been designated and perfecting what falls to me.” About action, Master… Can you tell us what this real action is, God’s action?

MG: This action, this God’s action, is the action present when the “I” is not there, when there is no longer the sense of someone present being, naturally, the one who is directly involved in the role of experiencer, in the role of author of the actions. See how this needs to be understood! Our actions are actions that can be centered on the “I” or they can be actions free from that center, which is the “I.”

There are two types of actions, Gilson. The first action is the action we know, so let's talk about that action. Because this is the quality of action that we need to investigate. This idea in us is very interesting – because it is just an idea – that tries to explain divine action, that tries to explain God's action, and this is something completely absurd. All we can do, and need to do, is investigate what represents our actions, which are actions in this “I,” this “ego,” this “person.” So, there are two types of action: the first is an action that we cannot talk about until we first have an understanding of what this action of the “I,” of the “person,” which is the action of the ego, is. So, this divine action… We can have an approach to this, but first we have to clear the ground, discover what this “I,” this “me,” this “person” in action, this “person” in operation is.

Our action is born from an experience, always from the past. We like to exemplify this, to make it easier for all of us: speaking is an action, it is an action that is born from an experience. All of our speech comes from a background of knowledge, memory, which is a remembrance, which is based on a past experience. So, the language we use here is recognized, when it is heard, due to memory, experience, and remembrance. So, our action – for example, here and now is the action of speaking and this action of listening… life is this movement of action – this requires experience.

So, action, as we know, is the result of the past, of what was acquired. There are two types of action, I will repeat once again: an action of a quality completely foreign to this model of action, which is the second type of action, which is the action known to all of us. So, this action known to all of us is the action that has as its principle knowledge, memory, and the past.

This action in us is an action that, at this moment, happens in a very simple, very natural way, but apart from this natural action, still linked to this background of knowledge, memory, remembrance, and experience, we have the action of the “I,” the action of ego. It is not an action of simply talking, preparing a meal or writing a letter, taking the child to school... Here, we are talking about an action centered on the “I,” on the person.

The action of the person is the action of separation, of division, an action that produces, in our relationships, in our world, in our life, confusion and problems. “I don’t like you” or “I like you,” “we don’t get along,” “I don’t get along with that person,” “she doesn’t like me,” “I can’t stand so-and-so, because he acts like that,” “he doesn’t accept me,” “he doesn’t understand me,” “he doesn’t recognize me,” “I have a serious problem with my wife,” or “with my husband,” or “with my children,” or “with my boss” ... All this is happening because of the action in the “I,” the action in the ego. This is no longer a simple, practical, objective action, like taking your child to school, driving your car or opening your computer and accessing your email. This is already a conflicting action, which is the action of this sense of division, separation and, therefore, of suffering.

Our actions, ego-centered actions, we know very well. Suffering happens, dispute happens. Envy is present in our relationships, possession is present in our relationships, control, emotional dependency, vanity, pride, arrogance, violence, verbal aggression, physical aggression, all of this is present among us. So, who are we in this action? The “I,” the ego, that sense of person, of separate identity, with a particular center, with its own desires, interests, goals, purposes, and fears. So, this action is the illusory action of the “I,” it is the illusory action of the ego. See: we say it is an illusory action, but in reality, it is a very objective illusory action, with a very specific purpose and producing a result that is not illusory at all.

The sense of a present identity, which is the “I,” the ego, this sense of present illusory identity, this “I,” this ego, is the illusory sense of identity, but despite being illusory, it exists within this “reality,” which is the “reality” of this dream of the world, this dream of separation, this dream of a relationship with others, this dream of an identity sees itself present, being aggressive, violent, possessive, and ambitious.

Yes, we have in our ego some moments of pleasure, of joy, of affection, tenderness, and caring for others, but none of this represents the Truth of Love. Love is something that is outside this model of this so-called “love” in our relationships. These relationships are relationships of the ego, of the “I,” they are relationships within this illusory sense of present identity, but, in a certain way, paradoxically, this is very “true.” However, there is no Truth in this! It “exists.”

When we look at the world, we see the confusion of these actions. And why does all this happen, Gilson? Because life represents a new moment, always a new moment. But we are coming – in this sense of the ego, of the present “I” – into contact with life, in this new moment, with the past of this representation of the “I,” this representation of the ego, which is in suffering, which is in contradiction, which has been in conflict for millennia. So, our psychological background of “being someone” is the result of a conditioning of human culture, which is in confusion, in suffering, which has been living in this condition of this past for millennia, of this psychological past, in this psychological time, which is the “I” time.

We are in contact with this present moment trying to adjust what is present here with this background. An example of this, which we have always given, is this issue of this illusion of believing... of believing that I know who the other person is, because I have the illusion that I know who I am. So, I think I know the wife, I know the husband, I know the boss, I know the children… I think I know myself. Based on this illusion, our contact with the other, which is always new... we are always, in this ego, faced with a contact with the past, with image recognition, with memory recognition. So, the ego is involved in this relationship with the other. It sees itself separate and having an idea about who the other is. A belief!

So, contact with the present moment is contact with something new, but the element we bring to this contact is an old element, which is the ego, the “I.” So, what is this divine action? It is the ego-free action! We can be aware of this, but there is no way to describe it in words. What we can say about this is that when this is present, conflict is no longer there, envy is no longer there, jealousy is no longer there, the weight of divergence, of contradiction, of dispute, of conflict of opinions, is not there anymore, and so on. Then, something new appears when the present moment is seen from an action of another order, of another quality, which is the ego-free action.

So, we have this action in the ego and we have the possibility of ego-free action. Our work here is to become aware of the illusion of this ego and let go of this present illusory identity. Then, a real action arises, which is no longer someone's action; it is the action of the Mystery, of the Unknown. It is the true action of Divine Grace. It is nothing that thought can idealize, imagine, or simply believe, within so-called “religious” principles, such as our beliefs, which are nothing but beliefs too. We need to experience this right now, in this present moment. This is something outside this known model. That's it.

GC: Master, we have a question from a subscriber here on the channel, from Genilza. She asks the following, within this matter of the action: “Talk about how to deal with a current problem, that is, debt that torments me now.”

MG: What is present is the model of thought. This model of thought is creating an identity present here and now. This present identity doesn't just have debts, it has many problems, there are innumerable problems. The question is: what is this identity present here and now? Dealing with something practical, with something direct... we deal with something practical and with something direct by taking action, and not idealizing an action. The idealization of an action or the psychological programming of what must be done to take action is still an ideological approach, it is still a belief, it is still a concept, it is still an idea. This is still within this model, which is the model of the present “I.” The idea of an “I” present with problems of all kinds is something that is happening within this illusion: the illusion of someone present here and now… the presence of someone present here and now idealizing to get rid of something.

So, we are always projecting the future for this “someone” who we believe to be here and now, having this or that problem, and this is only present in thought. It is when thought arises that the person arises. It is when thought arises that this problem or that other problem arises.

What we have stated here, Gilson, is that, as long as there is a sense of person present, that person will have problems. There is no person on the planet without problems. The very sense of a person is a big problem! He sees himself separated from life, he sees himself separate from others, he sees himself separate from what he wants in the future, he sees himself separate from the possibility of resolving a situation, because he sees himself within a limitation that is always egoic, always personal: “I don’t have money,” “I don’t have time,” “I don’t have a loved one”... So, there are countless problems for the “I,” for the ego.

Your question is “how to deal?” The idea is how to deal with debt, and here the proposal is how to deal with this sense of an “I” within the experience. That's the end of all kinds of problems. So, we are dealing with the Truth of What we are when we discard the illusion of what we believe to be; So, yes, there is the end of this illusory person who causes debts and who then finds himself in trouble to resolve these debts, because we are free from the problem of the “I,” the ego. It is always when thought is present that this or that problem is present.

So, we spend a lifetime in this model of an identity, which is the “I,” the ego, here, having problems. And when one debt is resolved, another arises; when a lack ends, it is filled, another appears; when one problem seems to have been resolved, the other begins to show itself, or, even before one problem disappears, we already have several others emerging.

The problem, Gilson, is that all of this is under the mind. The mind is the reason for this, the cause of this. So, the big problem is the mind. An approach to the Reality of your Being is an approach to the end for the “I.” This is the end of debts, the end of desire, the end of fear, the end of the one with debts, the end of the ego!

So, how to get closer to oneself? That's the question. How to recognize the illusion of this identity, which is the “I,” in this illusion of this debtor “I,” this “I” with a problem, this “I” with fear, this “I” with desires... Abandon this “I,” surrender this illusory sense of a present identity, which is appearing here, in this instant. When that sense of “I” is not there, when that thought model is not there, something new is present. This is the end of all suffering, of all illusory sense of identity with problems.

GC: Master, we have another question from a subscriber here on the channel. She says the following: “Thank you, Master Gualberto. Precious videos! I would like to ask a question: is it thought that says what I should say or not?”

MG: Notice how interesting the question is: “Is it thought that says what I should say or not?” Note, it is always thought that says things. In this answer that was given now, it was clearly stated that what we call “debt” is inside the mind. The debtor is within the mind, the thinker is within the mind, and thought is within the mind. So, here we have to figure out how to deal with the mind, which is this debtor, which is this thinker, which is this sense of “I” in trouble, in problems. Learning to deal with this is becoming aware, here and now, of this movement, which is the movement of the “I.”

Note that everything is, as we have said, a movement. This movement is action. This inadequate action, which is the action of the “I,” is what sustains the problem. There is always implicit, in our questions, an illusion, of which we are not aware, which is the illusion of an “I” – an “I” to get rid of debts, an “I” to take actions, an “I” to do or an “I” to stop doing. Thus, we are stuck to a completely illusory notion of time, which the “I” itself is introducing, to solve problems. Note that this second question is connected to the first one. We are always introducing the “I,” “ego,” and the “time” element to free ourselves from problems. Problems that, by the way, thought itself creates, and it revolves around a thinker who, in fact, is its own production, to solve a problem that thought itself is creating.

Here, we are inviting you to go beyond this sense, which is the sense of “I.” Therefore, awareness of the Truth of what You are, outside of this sense of “I,” there are no thoughts to know what to do with them, nor are there debts to get rid of. So, it's fascinating, Gilson, an approach to the Truth of action. You can only respond to action, at this moment, when that element, which is the “I,” which is the known, disappears. We don't have much time to explore this now, but there is, yes, the possibility of an action free of the known; It is the action of the Unknown, it is the action that is not premeditated, not calculated, not programmed, not idealized by thought. It is the action in itself, for itself.

The interesting thing about this action, Gilson, is that there is no author, there is no doer, there is no one involved in this. It is the action itself in expression. The art of approaching this quality of action is Self-Awareness.

We realize the Truth of this when we discover what it is to look without intervening, without trying to do something with what we look at, observing without this sense of an “I” that is the observer, becoming aware of thoughts, emotions, perceptions, and remembrances, whether good, like good remembrances, or bad remembrances, like the remembrance of a debt.

To become aware of this movement arising, putting attention on this instant, without this element that is involved, which is the “I,” the ego, in a sentimental way, in an emotional way, in an imaginative or imaginary way, with a thought, this is to be in contact with an action of another order. This is an approach of this Attention, which is the Truth of your Being revealing itself, when there is the Presence of True Meditation. This is what we are working on here with you, signaling to you a free life, in an action where this sense of “I” is not there. So, we are faced with That which is indescribable, That which is unnamable, That which is outside of what the ego knows, within its ancient model.

GC: Impressive how it is totally outside of what is known, what is understandable by the “I,” what the Master brings, this real action, this Freedom, because, no matter how hard one tries, it has no way of understanding what it is this Reality and what this free action is, because the ego is always in memory, in this psychological memory, and acting according to beliefs, according to what it knows. And only in Satsang, only with the Master, who, in this sharing of Consciousness, soon everything becomes very light and there comes an understanding of this Real Nature, this Natural State, as the Master says.

MG: Now, this is the point, Gilson: it is something natural, yes! That's the beauty of these statements here. Here, we find ourselves faced with the beauty of what is placed here, because we are talking about something that is natural. This ego-free action is something natural. The truth is that, in this conditioning of human social culture, we are not aware of this, because we are involved in this artificial condition of egoic identity, in an action driven by ego. We've been like this for millennia! And here we are pointing out a spontaneous, natural action, free from this sense of separation. This begins to happen in a very simple, very direct way, when we get closer to the Truth of our Being through Self-Awareness, through True Meditation.

That’s why we have invited you to approach Satsang, because there is something present in Satsang capable of making this possible, right now, for you; because, in truth, this is naturally already You, but it is necessary to empty all this egoic content, which is what occurs within the Truth of Real Meditation, in an experiential way, in a practical way. Before the Power of this Grace, this Presence, in Satsang, something new reveals itself, something outside the “I,” this free, indescribable, nameless action, which is the action of the Unknown, which is the divine action.

GC: Master, our time has come to end. Thank you for this videocast. And for you who are watching the video, if there is a sincere yearning to know this Reality of this Natural State, as the Master just commented, you are invited to come to Satsang. There are intensive online and in-person meetings. In the first comment, pinned, there will be a link to the WhatsApp group with information about the meetings, and go ahead leave a “like.” If you're not subscribed to the channel, subscribe now, share the video, and we'll see you next time.
