Joel Goldsmith | Consciousness is what I am | The Awakening of Consciousness | Master Gualberto

GC: Hello everyone! We are here for another videocast. Gratitude, Master, for your presence here again.

Master, today I am going to read an excerpt from Joel Goldsmith's book called: “Consciousness is what I am.” In this book, Joel makes the following comment, Master: “Some sort of shock will be necessary to awaken humanity to what it has been doing.” In this context, Master, what is the meaning and what does this shock or suffering mean according to the Awakening of Consciousness?

MG: This suffering, Gilson, is the present condition of resistance, of conflict with Life. It is something that is present due to the presence of this psychological background that is the “I,” this “me,” this ego. Life, in It, as It is – as It is, exactly as It is, not as the “I,” the ego, is seeing Life, but as Life is – does not carry suffering. The human being, the person, within this dream of a world, where he sees himself as an entity separate from Life, he gets in conflict with Life as It is. So, in this conflict with Life, there is resistance, there is a struggle, there is this sense of separation, and therefore suffering is present.

So, the role that suffering plays is this present role due to this model of separation, of duality, where the sense of an “I” is present looking at Life from what it expects Life to have for it, to represent for it, what it desires from Life. And when this is present, due to this separation and this model of judging, comparing, evaluating Life based on this mistake, suffering is present.

So, what is the role of suffering? The role of suffering is a role that this sense of an egoic identity is sustaining in Life, is sustaining in Existence, because Life, in itself, is something that is outside this movement of the ego, but the ego is trying to adjust Life to what it aims, what it desires, it has expectations from the viewpoint of this sense of separation, where Life and it exist. From this condition, conflict is established, and where there is conflict, there is suffering. But this is present because of this illusion, this ignorance, this illusion of “someone” present in Life, “someone” present being the experiencer within the experience, being the observer seeing things and having the expectation from those things that it desires, that it seeks, that it longs to have. So, conflict is established.

Suffering, in itself, is not real without “someone.” It's like the issue of fear, Gilson. There is no fear in itself, there is no fear in itself, just as there is no suffering in itself. Suffering presupposes the presence of an identity that separates itself as the sufferer; fear presupposes an identity that separates itself to be the fearful one. So, there is no fear without the fearful one, there is no suffering without the sufferer, and the presence of that suffering is, in fact, the presence of that sufferer, because he is the one resisting, fighting, trying to change, trying to alter Life as It is.

So, as long as this is sustained, illusion is sustained and suffering is sustained. When we become aware of the Truth of simply Being, that Being is Life itself. As there is no separation, there is no conflict, if there is no conflict, there is no suffering. So, the end of suffering is the end of this “I”, this sufferer, this one who sees himself with expectations, this one who sees himself looking outwards, seeing the world from this illusion, this dream, this egocentric model, where there is this self-centeredness, this self-interest, and this desire for Life to be as one wants it to be. But it's not like that! Becoming aware of this, of this sense of the present “I,” is the end of this “I.” Therefore, it is the end of suffering. This issue of suffering is something that we need to investigate, and we can explore this a little more here with you.

GC: It's very interesting how this vision that the Master gives... I have been closely following the work with the Master, participating in the Satsangs, and a little while, this vision happens. A professional situation happened recently that, certainly, if it had been a while ago, I would have been in a lot of pain. And an external event happened that didn't depend on me, and then a “machine gun” of thoughts took place. Normally, before following the Master, I would become entangled in those thoughts that it was a defeat, that I lost this, I mislay that, it didn't go the way I wanted. And what happened? This “machine gun” of thoughts came and I saw these thoughts coming. And it's just thoughts coming! There is a fact, something that happened, and the mind sent a bunch of thoughts, but they were seen. And then, it was funny, because instead of diving in with them and suffering from it, like people close to me professionally did – they were outraged, etc. –, I saw how much it was just this intense flow of thoughts. So, it's very... I want the Master to talk a little more about it.

MG: That’s very interesting. We are in the illusion, in this ego-identity, particularizing the experience. So, there is only one experience happening, but this experience happening, when it is not particularized, it is part of the experience of Life. Life is a constant experiencing. It is always showing itself as a possibility for pure experiencing when the ego is not there. When the ego comes in, this sense of “I,” which is what we have been doing for millennia – this is our conditioning, this is the prison condition for this ego-identity – we are always interfering and particularizing what happens as being an experience for “me.” And, from the point of view of this “me,” it just wants to win, it just wants to take advantage, it just wants to do well, because it is 100% interested in itself, always, always, always, invariably.

All the ego's interest is in itself. It has no relationship with Existence, with Life.

Gilson, this is very delicate. We believe we are doing something for the other. If we look closely, we will see that the egocentric interest in us is such that the human being is never, ever interested in anything other than himself. So, he always has to do well, he always has to succeed, he always has to achieve, obtain, accomplish, even if it implies, externally, a tremendous confusion and disorder in this Manifestation, in this Big Dream, which is not his dream – he is particularizing this Dream for himself, but Existence is a Divine Dream. But each human being wants Life to be at his or her service.

So, this egocentric model of being “someone” within the experience causes this experiencer, which is the ego, to have successes and failures, failures and successes. And he lives in this seesaw between failure and success, success and failure, and he knows absolutely nothing, because things happen as they happen. He has no control over this, but he knows... despite, in a little while, suspecting that he has no control, he remains recalcitrant and in the belief that he can do something, when, in fact, he cannot.

Everything is determined, Gilson, by Life, by Existence, and the ego feels very important in the midst of all this. And that's why it rebels, it gets frustrated, it suffers, because it sees itself as a separate entity that believes it has control, can control, but, in fact, it's not like that. The biggest proof of this is that its projects don't always work out, and when it seems like they're working out, something up ahead... it's just a matter of time to show that it's not quite like that. In other words, that's not how things work, Life is as it is! But the sense of a present “I,” of a present egoic identity, trying to make Life something particular to it... this identity is creating suffering for itself and for others.

So, our relationships with the closest person, whom we say we love, is still an egocentric relationship, because we are, basically, in this sense of the “I,” the ego, with problems. How can we have a relationship with the other without offering him or her the problem that we are? So, our condition is very delicate. Unless we know ourselves and understand all this movement of this illusory center and, in fact, free ourselves from it, from this illusion, this egoic identity, suffering will continue in its various forms.

So, people want to find out how to get rid of suffering, but they don't realize that suffering is not something separate from them that they could get rid of. The presence of suffering there, is the presence of the sufferer there. So, when we look at life, we believe that life is being difficult for “me.” In fact, this “me” is the difficulty in life. “Life is producing suffering for me.” In fact, this “me” is the suffering of life. And one detail, Gilson, it is just about this private life, this ego-centered life.

So, the sense of a present “I” needs to be investigated and discarded, because it is a fraud, it is the sufferer, and it is this sufferer who sustains suffering; it is the fearful one, and it is this fearful person who sustains the fear. See how this, Gilson, is different from anything we've ever heard out there. Things make us afraid; people make us afraid; situations make us afraid. The world causes us suffering, people make us suffer, and so on... But that's not true!

The sense of a present identity is sustaining the experience of fear, the experience of suffering and conflict, including with people, with situations and with everything else. Life is what It is. If the “I” is not there, the ego is not there, no matter what is happening, there is no sufferer, then there is no suffering; there is no fearful one, so there is no fear. But this is really something, as you often say, quite radical, it is the end of the illusion of “someone” present. We need to figure this out. We were born, Gilson, to discover that we were not born. We were born to discover that, beyond this so-called “birth, life, and death,” our Real Nature remains untouchable in this Reality that

is God. The Awareness of this is the end of the dream. This is the end of suffering, it is the end of the illusion of a present “I,” loaded with conflicts, fears, desires, and everything else.

GC: The Master's speeches, this vision of the Master, is completely radical and completely different from everything we see within the self-awareness and spirituality out there. Master, we have a question here from someone subscribed to the channel, who says the following: “Yes, it makes perfect sense. I comprehended every word, perfect connection. But what now? Do we need to scrutinize every thought and attitude?”

MG: “I comprehended!” No, actually, you understood, you managed to follow. So, intellectually, something became clear to you. But now something else is necessary, and that thing is the Awareness of Comprehension. This Comprehension does not come from a verbal understanding, from an intellectual understanding. This Comprehension comes from a direct perception, and this direct perception means the Awareness of Truth revealing itself and touching you on a level outside the intellect, outside that perceiver. Then, the Awareness of Truth reveals itself in Truth. In other words, this Being that You are, is Truth itself having a Revelation.

So, it is at this level that Comprehension happens. This requires work on Self-awareness, it requires work on bringing this attention closer to the movement of the “I,” to the movement of the mind. When this approach to Self-awareness is here, there is a revelation, which is the revelation of Meditation. In this Meditation, Silence reveals itself, and there is the clarity of it. So, it's not about analyzing, it's not about scrutinizing, it's not about reflecting. Another thing that is necessary is the Awareness of Self-Knowledge and a direct approach to the art of Being Consciousness, which is Meditation.

This is why our invitation to online and in-person meetings are fundamental, because something happens and becomes clear on a new level. A real approach to this is revealed when, in this readiness to perceive Reality, Silence happens, this Looking without the “I” happens. So, there is something that communicates outside of speech, outside of words, outside of the intellect, outside of verbal understanding.

GC: Master, exactly on this subject, “being in Satsang”... Here in the videos on YouTube, the Master is always in this State of Presence, in this Silence. But, really, there is a difference between being in a live meeting and, even more so, in Satsang, which is the entire weekend. So, it really is something that… the Master, also in Satsangs, shares words, answers our questions, but this Presence, this State of Grace that the Master lives, which is an Energy – the Master once talked about it, we don’t not use that term – it is a Field in which the Master lives, which greatly facilitates this State. Because I speak of myself: in the beginning I watched a lot of videos, then when I started participating in Satsangs, first online, in the third or fourth online Satsang, soon it became very clear how much this “I,” this center is just a thought! And it is obvious that there came a comprehension, but this center is always returning, but with this sharing of the Master's Presence, it is an incredible facilitation, beyond words.

MG: At first, Gilson, our approach is verbal, it is intellectual. Rarely does anyone approach through Silence. In general, our intellect is very active due to this search, this quest, and this whole movement of approaching through books and listening to lectures, participating in events. Intellectually, it is the most common form of this first approach, but, in this contact, there is something that occurs. It's interesting that you discover what it is, because we can't put it exactly into words.

You used an expression: “there is a Field.” There is something, yes, present in this contact, which silences this restless intellect which, in truth, is a chatty, agitated intellect, full of ideas, full of beliefs, full of concepts. Even listening to a speech like this, in general, human beings face great difficulty, because listening means the freedom to listen in silence. You cannot have an active intellect by drawing conclusions, agreeing, disagreeing. That's not listening! And this is, in general, how we approach these lines.

So, we have very little internal Silence space for Real Understanding. It is when Silence happens internally that words lose their importance, because, at that moment, Gilson, intellect, lost its importance. At that moment True Communion happens. What people don't know, Gilson, is that in this work there is something much, much bigger than speech, than words: it is contact with Silence. When it occurs, there is a Communion of Heart. So, in that moment, there is a sharing of Presence, of Real Consciousness.

Here, this Natural State is shared from this Silence, and not from this speech. The most important thing there is, is not speech, Gilson, it is sharing Silence. So, it is very common, in the contact with a Realized Being, for this sharing to happen through the look, through silence, through physical touch... Thus, physical presence, physical contact with a Realized Being, has an extraordinary value. There is another way which is also through the word, but this occurs despite this egoic, illusory, hyperactive center, with the conditioned intellect, running within each one of us, when we are in contact with a Realized Being. So, there is something being shared that, despite you, happens. So, you are silenced by the Power of that Silence, by the Power of this Presence, of that touch, when we physically have the opportunity; through Silence, when Silence touches us on a real, deep level, and the brain quiets down; by the look, anyway... There is a way for this to happen. This contact in Satsang is fundamental.

And as you said, a twenty-minute video is one thing, two videos, three videos... But the intellect is very busy! One still agitated after a video… So, one has the next video, and this is really wonderful, this really gives him great internal support for getting closer, but there is something much greater than a twenty-minute video or two videos: it is the contact of a few hours under this Silence, under the Power of this look, under the Power of this word, in this “looking and being looked at,” in this real “seeing and being seen”; this contact that, in India, they call Darshan, just discovering what it is to be still. Then, Meditation flourishes, your Natural State reveals itself. This is something that does not require any intellectual movement, verbal understanding.

GC: Master, speaking about myself, I was so unconscious of this intense flow of thoughts that... obviously, I know that there are thoughts, but I wasn't aware of this intense flow of thoughts. In Satsang, as there is this parameter – because the Master is in this Silence – and diving into this sharing of Presence with the Master, soon something new happens, where this Silence happens, then it becomes very clear how in the ego we live a very miserable life, we are slaves to thoughts and always have a lot of worry, restlessness or satisfaction with things, etc. And the Master, in this Silence, lives free, and embarking a little on this Silence of the Master, we can see how miserable this life in the mind is, this life in this identification with thoughts.

MG: It's because our particular vision of the world is the vision of a dream, of “someone” present within the experience, of “someone” present being the experiencer, whereas, in truth, there is only Life happening, there is no “someone.” This “someone” is a projection of thought itself. Thought itself passes as the thinker, passes as the observer, passes as the one who is listening, passes as the one who is doing, feeling. It is the movement of thought itself that is the movement of the present past, creating this illusion.

In Satsang, in these meetings, it is revealed. There comes a moment when your Being is revealed to you, which has nothing to do with this thought, has nothing to do with this movement of the “I.” Then, something new appears. That's when you start to realize something very real, outside of this dream. This is something really fascinating.

GC: In fact, Master, it is outside the concept of this, because, within the studies of spirituality, we study “I Am,” “there is only God,” and it ends up being just another trick of thought, repeating phrases. In this Silence with the Master, it is something completely outside of that, there is no thought, it is this Silence, so it is something that is really beyond words.

Master, our time is over, so gratitude for this videocast. For those who are watching the video, leave a “like” here on the video, leave a comment with a question so that we can bring it for the next videocast. And, mainly, for you, for those that what the Master says makes sense, give yourself the opportunity, come, and participate in an intensive weekend meeting. In the first comment, pinned, there will be a link to the WhatsApp group with information about these meetings, where you will be able to experience it in some way, to be able to understand everything that the Master says. Master, gratitude.

MG: Okay, Gilson.
