Joel Goldsmith | The Infinite Way | Observe without observer | Real Meditation | Master Gualberto

GC: Hello everyone! We are here for another videocast. Again, Master Gualberto is with us. Thank you very much, Master.

Master, today I'm going to read an excerpt from Joel Goldsmith's book called “The Infinite Way.” In this excerpt from the book, Joel says the following: “Truth is normally not within the sphere of our understanding and, when it appears to be, it must be investigated more deeply to verify its authenticity.” Master, could you talk a little more about this investigation of one's own mind, of observing one's thoughts?

MG: Let's go then! This expression “investigate” is actually a very good expression, if we understand its meaning within this context here. We actually just have to have a new approach when it comes to this word. In general, people use this expression in the sense of looking inward, like introspection. And as an introspection, we make a mistake here, because we look from one place.

So, looking from a place is this introspection. In this introspection, the person looks inside oneself to analyze, and not to become aware, which, for us here, would be the truth of the investigation. So, a direct approach to yourself, Gilson, is something that requires an investigation of what is going on inside each one of us; not only inside, but in this entire context of this life, this person, this sense of someone present internally and also externally. So, this is an investigation.

What is this investigation? It is an approach in which you do not interfere. You have to learn to look. It's like in a criminal investigation: the first thing you do is isolate, isolate the area where the crime occurred so that there is nothing new there, other than what was there at the time the situation occurred. So, investigating is looking without contaminating, it is having an approach without involving other elements within that approach. And this is, from a psychological point of view, something very delicate and very complicated for us.

For us, it is always easier to look from an analysis, to look from an introspection. And here, introspection will not work. The work of Self-awareness requires an approach to oneself without the sense of “someone” present doing analysis or introspection. Analysis, introspection means looking and seeing what we like and what we don't like, and what can be done with regard to what is being seen, what is being seen there.

In this work here, Gilson, the true approach to Self-investigation is the approach of looking without a reference, that is, discovering what it means to look without that observer, which is what judges, compares, evaluates, justifies, explains, and analyzes while looking. So, we have to learn to look at everything that happens here without interfering. This is something we don't know how to do.

One of the most complicated things for human beings is to become aware of the movement of the mind without getting involved with that movement. This would be, in reality, to look without the observer. And that's what we need: to learn to look without the one who is seeing to judge, compare, censor, want to remove things from there or add things there. Thus, the truth of this look is a look free of the “I.”

So, I see a classic difference, Gilson, here, between just looking and seeing. When you're seeing, it's you seeing. When you see, you see from a place, and when there is only looking, there is only observing without observer. It means looking without “someone” in that look. When we don’t put “someone” in that look, it’s a real look; When we put “someone” in that gaze, we are just seeing.

In fact, all this internal movement within us, of contradiction, of desire, of fear, and suffering, including guilt, remorse, regret, or any reactive response to what is being seen or appearing here in this moment, it always comes from this backdrop, that it is the egoic background, which is the foundation of this egocentric consciousness.

It is necessary to learn to observe without the observer, to look without the one who can see. That’s when there comes an understanding free of “someone,” of this personal center, of this personal “I” to like or not like, to do something or not do something. When this is possible, we break this psychological condition of identity, because there is great power in the awareness of this look, in the awareness of observing without the observer, and we are unaware of this. But this is the key to Self-awareness, this is the key to Meditation.

We can go a little deeper into this with you here. We need to figure out how to observe, just observe! A thought arises, a feeling arises, an emotion... a way of perceiving, a sensation... this is present as looking. This is enough so that this sense of “I,” of the ego, of this observer, does not come in to interfere, and when this happens, there comes the power of Silence revealing itself in Self-awareness.

This Silence, which reveals itself when there is this Verification without the center, without the “I,” reveals something outside the egoic mind. It is the Revelation of a New Consciousness and the Revelation of a New Mind present, which is Meditation. So, True Meditation is an approach to yourself here, in this moment, without this “I,” without this ego, without this observer, without this analyzer. Therefore, there is no analyst, there is no one who judges, there is no one who compares; there is only this Realization.

So, a fundamental element in Meditation, which is part of the Revelation of Self-awareness, is this Attention. The issue of Attention is essential to be understood. Bringing Attention to this moment means being aware of this moment, of whatever is arising here, without interfering, without getting involved. So, this look is revealed, Self-awareness is revealed, Meditation is revealed.

GC: It's interesting how the Master's vision of investigation is very innovative and different from what is addressed out there in spirituality. I speak for myself, because I studied a lot about this “investigating” and it was always me analyzing myself, investigating what the limiting beliefs were, etc. And then, when I had this approach to working with the Master, first with the videos, where the Master brings this speech, but I still didn't have any understanding. Later, when I started participating in the intensive weekend meetings, the Satsangs, I remember that, after some weekend intensives, then, in a different way, this observation happened without an observer, and it is something that Master knows very well how to bring into words, but it is something very different, very different from this “normal” of an observer seeing, someone investigating oneself.

MG: So, Gilson, it's because, in general, the way we have to approach a given experience, whatever it may be, is from a center, from an observer, from a judge, from a sensor, of “someone” present analyzing, observing, based on what he already carries, and this element does not enter here. Our habit, for example, is to listen from the viewpoint of “someone” present in that listening; it is seeing, and, to see, there has to be “someone” present seeing.

Here, the invitation is to discover what listening is, not listening from a listener; It's looking, it's not seeing from someone seeing. And our psychological conditioning of the human race, of human culture, of education, of culture, of society, of the world is to act, think, feel, speak, listen, do anything from a present “I,” because there is this belief of “someone” who is present. And, in fact, what is present, which is this conditioning background, is always interfering with listening. So, there is no listening, there is only hearing.

When listening to you, when “I” listen to you, “I” listen to you from this center, this “I”. When I look at you, “I” look from this center, this “I.” So, “my look” is already contaminated by a psychological condition of memory, of the past. So, what “I” have of you is not a real look. “I” am seeing you from the viewpoint of “my” conclusions, “my” beliefs, “my” opinions, “my” ideas, “my” images, that “I” make about who you are. When “I” listen to you, “I” am not listening to you, “I” am listening to you from a “me,” to see if I agree, if I don't agree, if I accept, if I reject. So, “my opinions,” “my ideas,” “my beliefs,” the mental images that “I” have are much more important than this simple and natural act of listening.

So, all of this, Gilson, is part of this movement in “me,” of an action centered on the “I.” Notice how fascinating it is for us to have this understanding: all our connection with life, with situations, with events, with experiences, with people, is always from a center, which is the “I”: this “I” that thinks, this “I” that speaks, this “I” that listens... That is, is it an “I” that is listening? There is just listening! This “I” that is seeing is actually an “I” that is just looking!

So, our entire worldview, in this psychological conditioning, in this state of sleep, of unconsciousness, which is the common state of the human being, we live in this dream of separate identity, of egoic identity, being someone present in a movement of egocentric action. So, speaking is an action, listening is an action, feeling is part of an internal movement happening; therefore, it is an action. Thought is an internal movement; therefore, it is an action. And all of this is happening from one place: that place is this “me,” this “I.” So, there is no awareness of the Truth of simply Being.

We are unaware of this, because all we know, which is part of this human consciousness, this consciousness of humanity, is this psychological condition of being “someone” within the experience. So, the way we have to do anything is by being present, considering, Gilson, the issue of meditation. How are we taught about meditation practice? From “someone,” from “someone” doing something. You sit down, cross your legs, close your eyes, and enter into a certain technique or practice. There you are! So, it is always “someone” in the action; this action is egocentric action.

So, the Truth in Meditation, the revelation of Meditation, does not show itself, because the sense of “someone” is present in the practice, in action, in the act of meditating. Meditation is the Natural State in which there is this Awareness of Being, but there is no “someone.” Just like speaking or listening, there is no need to have “someone.” If there is no “someone,” I call it “listening.” If there is “someone,” there is “someone” hearing; in looking, if someone is looking, I usually say that this is “seeing.”

In general, we are seeing things, we are hearing about things, and we are also in practices within spirituality, always with this sense of “someone” present. This “someone,” notice, always comes from the past, “someone” already with a background of past experiences; that is, it is this entire movement of the egoic mind, of egoic consciousness, of this state of being “someone” in life, in living. And in this instant, in this present moment, the Reality of Life, in It, there is “anyone.” The intervention or interference of this background falsifies this Reality, which is the Reality of simple Being, of simple experiencing, without the background, without the “I.”

This, Gilson, is what we need to discover in life: a life free from this center, free from this “I.” So, there is a look without desire, without fear, without conflict, without contradiction, without opinion, without judgment, without comparison, without analysis. It is a look free of a psychological background, a look free of the ego, a listening free of a psychological background, a listening free of the ego. So, an action occurs at that moment, without this movement, which is the common movement of this ego-identity, which always moves with its intentions, with its motivations, based on its desires and, also, its fears.

So, Gilson, we are facing something that is fascinating: it is the Discovery of your Essential Nature, free from all this movement, which is the movement of egoic identity, which is the movement of conditioning. So, in that moment, there is something entirely new, something entirely indescribable present, and it is present because of the power of this Silence, this Presence, this Grace, which is the Presence of Divine Truth, the Truth of God. Alright?

GC: Master, this Natural State that the Master lives in, in this Silence, in this Completeness, is something unspeakable, because this flow of thoughts is so strong within the human, this flow of being the center of experience, that it seems like it is a dead end. Now, in Satsang with the Master, this Presence that the Master shares, this Natural State that you live in, Master, is something… It is something very beautiful, very light, very indescribable. Because, embarking on this Presence of the Master, we can see this: the mind is a dead end, but it can be seen. But it's this looking, which is totally different from “someone” seeing oneself; It’s this look, this looking, this life happening. It is something unspeakable, Master.

MG: Your Natural State, Gilson, is the State free of this “I.” This Natural State is Meditation. In this state, all the conditioning or all the programming, all the way of being “someone” within the experience, is no longer present. So, here it is about a direct response to the present moment, without a movement that is coming from the past. So, it is a response to the instant, to the moment, where action, as it does not come from the past, is not reactive. If it is not reactive, because it does not come from the past, it is an action free from this self-centeredness, from this self-interest, free from the ego. So, we have an action free from this dream, from this so-called “model of existence” common to everyone, which is this dream of separate existence, of separate identity. So, this is Liberation in life.

The only thing, Gilson, in life is Being. It's not accomplishing things, it's not achieving goals, it's not finding purposes, it's not obtaining, it's not becoming powerful, famous, rich, someone successful. None of this is real. All of this is still part of that dream, where the center of that given experience is still the ego. So, none of this provides Real Love – Real Love, not the love that people seek – none of this provides Real Peace, Real Happiness, Real Freedom, Real Completeness, because all of this is occurring within this model, which is the pre-set model of egoic consciousness, of this condition, which is just a repetition of the past.

People have obtained achievements, but the achievements they obtain, others have already attained similar achievements and have not realized this Completeness of Being, this Totality of Divine Consciousness, of God Consciousness. The detail is that, in our culture, human beings are conditioned to envy, to ambition, to this model of copying human culture. So, everyone is looking for something that they don't actually know they are looking for. Ultimately, the human being is not in search of anything other than the Truth about himself, but the egoic mind has diverted the human being, due to the conditioning of humanity, towards the various external searches for achievements.

So, it ends up that the human being begins to believe that one day he will be happy, that he will have love one day, one day, peace, and that he just needs to study more, work more, try harder. This requires the presence of time, the presence of a present, determined identity, with purposes and objectives, which are, in reality, purely egocentric. And all this movement is, in fact, a movement away from That which is here and now, when, exactly, there is no longer this movement of reaching, of obtaining, of accomplishing, of getting there. This “there” is a psychological future that thought has built in order to be happy in it – this thought in the format of the “I,” the ego, which is the thinker. And that never happens! The point is that this never happens!

The Reality of God is here, Happiness is here, Love is here, Life in its Totality is here. There is nothing that can be achieved, accomplished, or freed from, in this psychological condition of conflict, contradiction, and fear that we are in; that could give us the Truth that we already are in this moment, when the ego is not there. The point is that, at this moment, what we are or what we appear to be, what we represent to be, is something else, it is confusion, it is disorder, it is suffering. But there is a Reality beyond this, which is present in the Nature of Being, at the center of all existence, being Life itself, Reality itself, but This is hidden from the eyes of the ego, from the eyes of the mind. So, we are blind to It, because we have nothing that can help us to understand It.

In our world, we do not have any vision of this possibility, because human beings are not aware of what the Reality of their Being represents, due to this dream and sleep condition in which humanity finds itself. It's exactly like that.

GC: Master, we have a question here, from someone subscribed to the channel. Sula Kruger asked the following, she made the comment: “Yes, it makes perfect sense. I understood every word, perfect connection. But what's now? Do we need to scrutinize every thought and attitude?”

MG: Absolutely, it’s not about that! Understanding the Revelation of the Truth of Being does not require the intellect analyzing, seeking to adjust, or having a mere verbal or intellectual understanding. Here, it is precisely an emptying of this psychological content, which is the content of the “I,” of the ego. And this is something that becomes possible, not when we analyze or when we make this intellectual, merely verbal approach to understand this. We need to get closer to this look without this center, without this “me,” without this “I.”

So, on the channel, Gilson, we have been talking about the importance of Real Meditation and the Truth about Self-awareness, not what some people talk out there about “self-awareness.” In the Revelation of the Truth of Self-awareness, it is very clear that the approach is the approach of a look as it was addressed now: without “someone” looking. This look without an observer, this observing without this seeing that the “I” does. We don't need to use the intellect; all we need is to become aware of what is here. Just looking... This has great power to break all this conditioning of programming, of past continuity. So, Meditation is the awareness of this Being, at this moment, revealing itself without this background that is the “I,” which is the ego. Participating in the meetings is essential to further investigate this.

GC: Master, we've had our time, but that's it: participating in these meetings with you, Master. And, then, these words that Master speaks in the videos posted here on YouTube, they really have a meaning, but not an intellectual meaning of understanding what the Master says, but in this experience, in this understanding. Because in Satsang, it's not just a 20-minute video or a few 20-minute videos, but it's an entire weekend, where the Master goes live, is available, answering questions, talking and pushing us into this investigation, but with this touch of this Presence that Master lives, in this Natural State, which makes all the difference.

Master, gratitude for this videocast. For those who are watching the video, leave a comment, leave a “like” and also share this video. And in the first comment posted here below, there will be the link to the group for information about the meetings, online and also in-person Satsangs. So, here's the invitation.

Thanks, Master! See you soon!
