Mandukya Upanishad: the four states of consciousness | New Consciousness | The State of Turiya

The question is: is a life free from all suffering possible? A life where there is this Real Presence of Peace, Freedom, Happiness, and Love?

So, only asking “Who are you” or “Who am I” is still very, very vague. Here, I want to invite you to investigate the nature of the “I,” this “you” as you see yourself, but this requires you to understand, first of all, the nature of this feeling and thinking you have. Have you noticed your thoughts are not original? There are no authentic thoughts, and here I refer to common thinking of living, not to the creative one, which is another matter; here I refer to this thinking of living, in this living.

We are a set of memories, psychologically speaking, of ideas, concepts, memories, recollections, political, philosophical, and religious positions making a set of beliefs; we have this structure formed, the constitution of the “I.” Everything we talk about is based on theories, ideas, concepts, and thoughts, and there is nothing original about it. We are the result of the culture where we were born, the education we received, and the propaganda we are exposed to. So, these thoughts in us are all the result of cultural, social, and educational conditioning, and this gives this formation, which is the formation of the “I.” Thus, this person you believe to be is just a set of memories, ideas, remembrances, conclusions, evaluations, concepts, prejudices, and beliefs; your name is something given and taught you; you are not that name, you are not that set of memories, remembrances, and recollections either.

All this conditioning, this programming, this whole program of being “someone,” moving as “someone” in the world, is something based on this pattern, this conditioning. That present sense of “I” is that. So, when you say “I,” you refer to a set of memories and remembrances. When you speak, you do it from what you’ve heard, read, learned, studied, saved, and recorded. Here, we work with you to end this illusion of the individuality you believe you have and are, the illusion of that individual. There is no such thing as an individual; there is this illusion of individuality.

Our consciousness is the consciousness of that “I,” and that consciousness of the “I” has no reality outside that context because whatever you call consciousness is simply being aware. You can only be conscious of what you identify, and you can only name what you know, and that is part of the conditioning, the set of memories and remembrances. That is not you, and that consciousness is not your consciousness; it is the consciousness of humanity, the consciousness of culture, the human consciousness. So, this truth of individuality does not exist, but rather the illusion of thinking about this individuality. You see yourself as an individual and separate entity, although only from a physical viewpoint that this separateness exists, because, psychologically, you are the whole culture, every human being around you, and you carry everything that everybody does; there is no difference. Thus, there is nothing really singular, unique, particular, or individual.

It’s interesting when people talk to us about the problems they are experiencing, see that we work like this: when talking about our problems, we particularize these problems as if there were really particular problems. Every problem you have is just a human problem; the only particularization is that it is linked or connected to this body-mind; however, your problem is the human problem; the present fear, anxiety, envy, jealousy, ambition, and concern, all these are human problems. They are private because of this particular body-mind experience, but the problem is human. It’s not that person’s problem; it is that person who particularizes the problem because of that singularity, that particular experience of that “I.” Here lies the illusion; we carry the illusion of an “I” and that “I” has problems; it is naturally the problem of humanity, it is everyone’s problem, but it is particularizing it for this body-mind.

I want to invite you to the end of this “I” and, therefore, to the end of this human problem. The ego, the “I,” is the only problem present, particularizing personal issues for this body-mind. Is that clear? Or are you a bit confused? Once free from this sense of the “I,” this ego, once free from this cultural conditioning where problems exist, you will be free from complications because these problems consist of the illusion of being “somebody,” seeing yourself as “somebody,” of positioning oneself culturally, socially, psychologically, as “someone” in the world.

The work of the Awakening of Consciousness is the Awakening to a new Consciousness. So, what we call “being conscious” or this consciousness of the “I” is this set of conditioning, of psychological programming we carry; this is what I have been calling psychological conditioning, the conditioning of the “I” in this consciousness of the “I.” The Real work consists of the Awakening of the Truth about your Being, which is the Real, the new, and the True Consciousness. If It flourishes, problem ends, and here I used the expression “problem ends” and no longer “problems end,” because these “problems,” in the plural, are problems that exist in this single problem, this single problem that is the “I,” which is the sense of a separate identity living within this psychological structure of cultural and psychological conditioning. Then, the end of this problem, which is the “I” problem, is the Realization of God, Spiritual Enlightenment, the Awakening of Consciousness, or Spiritual Awakening. It has many names; I have called it the Natural State, the State Free from this illusion of “someone” present, here and now, in living. It is evident that, for this to become possible, we all need to work in this direction, and this work is on that psychological deconditioning, on the deprogramming of this psychological condition of thinking and feeling.

This mental consciousness, this consciousness of the “I,” of the ego is what we have called consciousness, all this content that some call conscious and unconscious is part of the content of this consciousness of the “I.” This consciousness is not the Reality, not the Truth; it is what is shown, what presents itself as being the truth, the reality, what we know. When we look at the world, the world is living within this programming, this psychological conditioning, this “I” consciousness. I have compared this consciousness of “I” to the dream state we have at night. Notice that while you dream at night, everything that happens in the dream is very real, until you wake up, then you realize that it was a dream, none of that was real, but while the dream was happening, you rarely become aware that it is a dream because, in general, oneiric consciousness is the consciousness that the dream is the reality of that instant, of that moment; that world, that experience, that “me” is real, and only when you wake up, when you open your eyes and realize you are in bed, only then it becomes clear that all that world and all that presence of “someone” there, which was this “I,” was just part of an imagination, of a mental construct. Then, all that was a mental world, all those experiences were mental and that “I” was also part of the mind, all of this was part of a movement of thoughts unfolding with sounds, colors, shapes, and names: the world of the dream.

What we call “life” here and now, actually, in the consciousness of the “I,” is also a dream; this here is a dream. All kinds of things are happening here; all experiences are happening here. There are feelings, actions, and sensations here. There is a whole movement of feeling, thinking, doing, and undoing; here, we have birth, old age, illness, marriage, children, a family, success, and failure. What we call “consciousness of the world” is this consciousness of the “I,” and this, here, is a dream. We do not realize this is a dream because we don’t awaken. We have it here as something very real, good and bad things; the good ones please us, we seek them, we feel happy with them; and the bad ones displease us, we try to get away from them, they make us sad and unhappy creatures. The “being happy” or “unhappy,” “being well” or “bad” within this context of this life, which is the life common to everyone, is taking place within a dream, but we do not realize that because we have no “where” to wake up from. From a dream at night, we have a “where” to wake up from, and we do it and realize it was a dream, but what about this one? Unless you awaken, you never see this here as a dream because it is very, very, very real for this context of the consciousness of the “I.” This, here, is as real as that context of the consciousness of the dream.

Here, unless you wake up, you will never know that it is a dream, and here our job is to invite you to Awaken, to the Awakening of Consciousness because what we have here is not really consciousness; here, we have the consciousness of the “I,” mental consciousness, another type, another quality of dreaming; the Sages have been declaring this for millennia in India; Mandukya Upanishad says the following about the “four states.” What four states are these? We know three of them. All this happens because we are sleeping. Three states are well known to all of us: the vigil, dream, and deep sleep states. But there is a fourth state which is unknown but clearly known by the Sages, by those who have realized God, who are actually experiencing this Awakening of Consciousness – Mandukya Upanishad deals with it: the four possible states.

The psychological conditioning we carry, all this programming of being “someone” within the human experience occurs because of this sleep state we are in; so in this dream state we do not realize that we are sleeping, but we are. In the vigil state, we do not perceive we are asleep, but we are. And in the state of deep sleep, there is no awareness of dreaming, of the vigil state, nor of sleep. These are the three states we know: vigil, dreaming, and deep sleep, and in these three states, the condition of the consciousness of the “I” of this human consciousness – which I also call egoic consciousness – is the consciousness of the ego, the state of sleep. It is like I have already told you: from the dream state you can wake up to the vigil state and realize that it was a dream, but from the vigil state unless you really awake to the Turiya State, which is your Natural State of Being-Consciousness-Bliss, you will never know you are asleep. You may even have a belief about it, and we must say this here: it is no use reading the Mandukya Upanishad, the entire Vedas, or all the Scriptures because that is at the intellectual level; you have to experience It. People greatly appreciate reading and listening to Sacred Books, but we need to live This, that Reality, to directly experience the Reality of What is your Being.

The State of Turiya is the fourth possible state, the State of the one who is Awake; so it is not the vigil, not the dream, nor is it the deep sleep state; it is the Awakened State. The fourth state is something possible for each of us in this life, in this existence. The presence of the Reality of your Being is the end of that consciousness which is the consciousness of the “I,” that conditioned consciousness, which is that consciousness, in reality, of complete unawareness of Truth – what I have also called unconsciousness.

So, what we call “consciousness” or “being conscious” is unconsciousness, this sleep state which occurs to us in deep sleep, in the vigil state, and the dream state. The Truth of your Being is in this Full Consciousness, Real Consciousness, the Consciousness of Being. The Truth of your Being is that fourth state beyond vigil, dreaming, and deep sleep. This State is Love, Happiness, Freedom, Presence, Intelligence, the Divine Truth free from this psychological time, from all this oneiric condition of the vigil state and the dream state, and beyond this condition of sleep, as it happens to us in the vigil, dream, and deep sleep. That is the State of Turiya, your Natural State of Being, straight from the vision of the Sages living This. This speech, like the Scriptures, is something to live and not theorize or intellectualize, simply placing it as more intellectual or verbal knowledge. Then, that Reality establishes itself as the Truth of your Being, here and now. That is Spiritual Enlightenment, the Realization of God, the Realization of your Being; thus, What is present is Love, Peace, Freedom, and Happiness, the recognition of the Truth of What you are, of this Divine Truth you Are and bring.

Now, you must understand that theoretical aspects are theoretical. Here, sometimes, I have quoted the Vedas or the Upanishads, expressions of Christ, of Buddha; here, I have cited, as I am doing now, the Vedas, but this is a purely theoretical aspect. You can read the Vedas and intellectually believe that you know about the four states now; this is not real; it is intellectual, verbal, and theoretical. Books and theory cannot give you That; the only contact with True Meditation in practice can show you the Truth of This, the Truth of your Natural State of Being-Consciousness-Bliss, which is the State of Turiya. So, it’s not about reading the Upanishads or studying the Scriptures; it’s about, as I have always said, studying yourself, observing the illusory nature of this “I” moving in this world of psychological conditioning and programming, only then is the end for this dream, for this sleep, for this illusion, possible.

So, what we have in the Scriptures, in the Mandukya Upanishad, these four states, is something that when you Realize your Being, you are aware of what the Scriptures are about, not theoretically, verbally, intellectually, but experientially. Your Natural State of Being is beyond sleep; it is when you are in the truth, Awake, aware of the Truth because you are that Truth, that living Scripture, which is the Reality of your Being.

We have several playlists here on our channel, one of them is about this approach to the True Meditation in a practical way; this is what puts you in front of the Truth of your Being, the Revelation of What you are in your Natural State, which is the State of Turiya, your State of Pure Consciousness, of Presence and Reality.

This is our subject here on the channel. If this is something that makes sense to you, leave your “like” and subscribe to the channel. We have online, face-to-face meetings, and also retreats where we work on this with those who approach. In the video description is our WhatsApp group for these meetings, including online ones.

If that’s something that makes sense to you, see you again, okay? Thanks for the meeting, and see you!
