There is something we need to see here together. Human beings are not searching for the Truth, they are looking for an end to this old condition in which they find themselves. What we have noticed is that people come to us to lament, complain, look at the pain they are feeling and want to get rid of it.
People don't come to us to investigate the Truth, and this is explained in a very simple way: we don't know the Truth about who we are. We are unaware of the structure and nature of this “I.” Illusion, ignorance, and not understanding this puts us in a condition where we have no desire for the Truth. All we want is to get rid of the pain, and here we already come across the first difficulty.
We can't get rid of pain by wanting to get rid of it. Wanting to get rid of pain is not enough to get rid of it. We need to understand what that pain represents. It's not verbal understanding, not intellectual understanding. Intellectual understanding is a verbal understanding; you understand if you analyze. But here, analyzing doesn't solve it, having an intellectual understanding of the subject doesn't solve it.
It is necessary to have a direct observation, a direct perception, a direct look at this issue of pain; this is when we perceive the element of duality present within the experience of pain, this element that sustains this duality. And here the duality is this “me and the pain,” this “me and this situation that arises, that shows itself.”
Being aware of looking at this pain shows you this duality. This element in duality is the “I,” the ego, the element that separates itself from what shows itself here, from what is here and now. It separates itself by wanting to get rid of, to do something about, to eliminate this pain, not clearly understanding that this pain is sustained precisely because this “I,” this ego is present. There is no separation between the one in pain and the pain itself. Understand that.
So, this first difficulty is the crucial difficulty, the most relevant difficulty we have. Because we don't understand ourselves, we've never studied ourselves, we never come into direct contact with this “I.” We always look at the experience from the “I,” but we never investigate the nature of the “I,” which is the one observing the experience, then there is this separation. Follow that here with us right now.
For example, when you're sad, you never suspect that there's no separation between you and the sadness, but see, it's so simple: there can be no sadness without someone sad. Notice what an interesting thing we have here. You've never experienced sadness without being there, you can't have a memory without being present, you can't have joy without being there. So, there is no separation between you and the joy, you and the memory, you and the pain, you and this sadness. There is no separation. We always have two elements, two elements that are illusorily separate, supposedly separate because what we have is an experience.
So, the real approach to the Truth requires an approach that shows you that there is no separation. Therefore, this duality is the basis for disorder, confusion, suffering, and this is present because of ignorance, because of illusion. Then, we don't have an inclination to discover the Truth, but rather to get rid of suffering. However, notice this very clearly here: we can't get rid of suffering because you are the suffering. We can't get rid of anguish, fear, anxiety, depression, because there is no separation between this depressed person and the depression, between the anguish and the anguished person, just as there is no separation between this sadness and the one who is sad.
Understanding this is the contact with the Truth. Contact with the Truth sets you free. Truth is the awareness of what is here and now. The awareness of what is here and now, is the awareness of what IS, of what shows itself, of what is present. So, the sense of the “I,” of the ego, of this “me” is never separated from its experience, and yet it is all the time separating itself from its experience. This discovery is fascinating. It separates itself from experience by wanting to get rid of it – if you want to get rid of fear, if you want to get rid of sadness, if you want to get rid of depression.
How to overcome depression? How to overcome fear? How do I get rid of suffering? These are the questions, but look: separation is present, and if this separation is present, ignorance is present, illusion is present, duality is present, then there is no Truth, there is no understanding, there is no direct contact with experience. What is present is this model of separation, of duality. So, because there is no Truth, there is no Liberation. Thus, we have no end to this condition, which is experience.
Look how simple it is; at the same time, it's very new for most of us to hear something like this. You can't set yourself free, you can become aware of the experiencer in the experience, and this awareness of the experiencer in the experience is the end for this experiencer, this is the end for this experience. So, there is a Liberation, but it's not the “I” setting itself free, it's just Liberation happening. Liberation is present when the “I” is not, when the experience is not.
So, when there is no longer this separation, when the experiencer is the thing experienced, when the depressive thought is the own depressed one, when this separation disappears, when there is only one Reality present, which is the experience, what happens? When there is no resistance, when there is no struggle, when there is no desire to change, to alter, to get rid of, then we have at this moment the absence of separation, of duality, and when duality ends, the experience undergoes a radical transformation because there is no longer the experiencing element. Are you with me?
Before a thought, don't put the thinker, the one who wants to get rid of, adjust, modify, cling, get involved with thought. So, when there is no longer the element of separation, we no longer have duality, then at that moment we are before what IS. What Is is the presence of Life, the presence of experience without the experiencer, then in this experiencing there is Life, there is what Is. At that moment, Something occurs outside the known, Something outside this duality. This duality, I'll repeat, is resistance, struggle, the desire to get rid of, to do something with what is present here.
What we are sharing with you here is the contact with Self-Awareness. This Self-Awareness is simultaneously the presence of Meditation, the Real contact of Meditation, the Real Meditation present. So, we are facing the real end to suffering when there is an end to that sufferer; we are in direct contact with all that representation that comes from the past, that in this moment, which is the moment of experience, that past is being seen, because we are before pure observation without the observer. Notice that this requires the presence of an Attention on the whole movement of feeling, emotion, thought and perception.
Direct Attention to this movement is the end of this duality, the end of the “I” and its experience. It is the end for the fearful and the fear, for the sufferer and the suffering, for the one who is sad and its sadness, it is the end for the thinker and thought. Investigating this, looking at this, becoming aware of this is possible when there is this “look” at all this inner movement within you. A look that requires the presence of this Attention without any choice, without any desire, without any motive, without any intention.
So, to have an approach to the end of suffering, to have an approach to the end of the states of unhappiness, these various internal states that human beings have been experiencing for millennia. We are showing you here the end to anxiety, depression, to the end to anguish, the end to fear, the end to the contradiction of desires. Notice that all this produces a lot of suffering. Where there is contradiction between desires, when they oppose each other, when there is this conflict of internal contradiction within each of us because of this duality, there is suffering. We are telling you that the end of suffering is possible, the end of depression is possible, the end of anxiety is possible, the end of anguish is possible.
Being aware of the whole movement of the “I,” the ego, just being aware of it, without separating yourself, without being divided by intention, motivation, judgment, the will to do something. Just noticing it. Noticing the experience, becoming aware of this movement that comes from the past in order to judge, compare, evaluate, reject, wanting to do something with it. Becoming aware of this is the end of this separation, the end of this duality. That requires the presence of this Mindfulness. The beauty of Mindfulness, the Truth of Mindfulness, is that the “I” element, the “me,” the ego, the one who wants to maintain the continuity of the experience and the one who also wants to get rid of the experience, which is the experiencer, is not present. Alright?
So, our purpose here in these meetings is to become aware of the Truth since the Truth sets you free. The Truth brings this Freedom; it is the Freedom of the absence of the “I,” the absence of the ego. Then, for this purpose we have meetings here on weekends, they are online meetings that take place on weekends. You can find our WhatsApp link to take part in these meetings here in the video description. In addition, we have face-to-face meetings and also retreats where we are working on this with you. If this is something that makes sense to you, I'd like to invite you to leave your like here and subscribe to the channel, OK? And let's work on it. Alright? Here's the invitation and we'll see you. Thanks for meeting me and see you next time!
