The question often asked is: “Where is happiness?” Another question is: “Who is God?” Another is: “Who am I?” So, notice what an interesting thing: “Where is happiness,” “Who is God” and “Who am I” seem to be different questions. In fact, the answer is the same; you have the same answer to these apparently different questions.
The matter of language is very interesting. The issue of speech and words is very interesting. You know that we have words that are synonymous, they carry the same meaning. And there are words that are not synonymous and, interestingly, carry the same meaning. The words “God” and “Love” are not synonymous, the words “Happiness” and “Truth” are not synonymous, but once you understand what they mean, you understand that they are just words. It is very interesting to notice that words do not declare what the thing is, they are just symbols, images, figures that represent the thing itself.
So, when someone asks where God is, thought immediately projects itself with a symbol, with an image, a photograph of what This represents, and this is totally wrong. Since reality is not the word, the real thing is not the word, taking this symbol, this image, this photograph and putting it in the place of the thing itself is a mistake. And that is what we have done with the word “happiness.”
What is the symbol of happiness for most of us? These are dreams, achievements, the conquest of pleasure, fulfillment in this or that; this is always personal. So, in personal fulfillment, in personal pleasure, in personal achievement, in personal dreams, for us lies happiness. So, for us, happiness is in accomplishing things; For us, the Truth of God is in an emotional, sentimental, spiritual symbol. All of these are representations of images that thought creates, that thought formulates. The Truth of “who am I” is the same thing.
What is the idea you have about yourself? This idea is a symbol, a photograph, an image, a construction of thoughts about yourself. So, we don't know the truth of this “who am I.” We have images, we have beliefs, we have ideas, we can make a biography of this person. All we have in a biography of someone are descriptions of memories, remembrances, images, which represent only thoughts, ideas. An autobiography or biography does not represent the truth of who is being described there; all we have there are thoughts, memories, stories, ideas.
What is the truth about this “I am?” What is the truth about God? What is the truth about Happiness? Observe the very movement of thought within you. You will, in this observation, become aware of how you function and, thus, you will realize that this “you” is just a set of remembrances, recollections, memories.
What is the truth of this “I?” Watch this here and now. When you describe who you are, what are you describing? When you write about this “you” that you are, what are you writing about? Thoughts, memories, remembrances, images. So, what is the I? The “I” is the one who is present because of memory. Without memory, there is no “I.” If you cannot have a clear memory of the name – your own name – you have no name. Someone may have the idea, the image, the memory of your name, but that is his or her memory. If you don't have the memory, the remembrance of your name, you remain nameless.
This sense of a present “I” is just a story one can remember. If you can remember, you have a story. If you can't remember, you have no story. It's simple. If you can remember your name, you have a name; if you can't remember, you have no name. This is the reality of this “I” consciousness in you. Thus, this sense of a present “I” is a set of remembrances, memories, recollections. This does, this gives, this demonstrates the presence of the experiencer.
The experiencer is this present person who, when going through experiences, recorded it at some point – recorded the name, recorded the story. This is what we call “consciousness,” the consciousness of the “I,” it is just that. You cannot be aware of what you do not remember. You cannot be aware of what you do not recall. Thus, the presence of consciousness is remembrance, recollection. That is the sense of consciousness we know, of self-consciousness, of ego consciousness, of “I” consciousness.
Thus, notice how interesting all this is: what you can have about God is just an image, an idea, a belief. This is memory, something you have learned, you have as a present thought, but you do not know the Reality beyond thought, the Reality called God. This Reality that we call God, It has no name, It is not part of history, it is not part of memory – notice this, how fascinating it is – it is not part of remembering or forgetting; It is not part of this consciousness, which is just a remembrance.
So, what is the Reality of God? What is the Reality of the Truth of this Being that we are when this “I” consciousness is not there, when this name is not there, when this story is not there? Do you see what we want to put here for you? Then, where is God? Where can we find Him? Can we find Him or is God's Reality the Only Reality? Do you see?
The presence of this “I” is something learned, it is part of memory. This name, this history, this “I” consciousness, all this appeared in time and, also, in time it disappears, while the Reality of God is That which is here, outside of time, outside of history, outside of memory. See where we are signaling to, where we are pointing to. So, for the answer “Where is God?” there is the Truth that there is only God. To answer this “Who am I?” what is the truth of this “I?” The end to the illusion of this “I” is the answer to where God is, where God is found.”
So, we are talking about the same Reality, the same Truth. And here, the word “God” and the word “I” are not synonymous, but the Truth of Divine Reality, the Reality of Divine Truth is the Reality that is here, at this instant, beyond this sense of “I,” of the ego, beyond this sense of a separate identity, seeing oneself as separate from others, from the world, from life and from God. All of this is part of beliefs, all of this is still part of thought.
Thus, discovering the Truth of What we are is discovering the Truth of where God is. The understanding of this is the understanding of Love. For us, love is a sensation, pleasure, the joy of being with another. There is in this so-called “love” the relationship between two things: the one who loves and what is loved. So, love for us is sensation, pleasure, it is always a relationship between two things. We do not understand the Truth of Love.
What we call “love” is full of jealousy, possession, control, desire and, therefore, fear, violence, and suffering. This is not love, but we call it love because somehow it gives a certain fulfillment to this “I,” it brings some level of sensation to this “I.” The truth is that this “I” always depends on something else to sustain itself as a separate identity.
Therefore, the presence of this “I” is the absence of Love because when Love is present, there is no other, there is no search for this or that sensation, this or that fulfillment. It is something totally different from what the “I,” the ego, the person knows. The matter of happiness is the same thing. Happiness is not something in time; it is not something attainable, achievable, it is not happiness for “me,” it is not happiness for the “I.” The presence of Happiness is the Truth of Love, which is the Truth of God, which is the Truth of this Not-I.
The presence of your Being, of this Real Being, which is outside of the known, which is outside of this limitation of thought, is the Truth of God, the Truth of Happiness, and the Truth of Love. Getting closer to this is possible, yes, when there is an understanding of all this movement, which is the movement of the “I,” and when there is an emptying of all this internal movement that sustains the illusion of this experiencer, of the one who is always cultivating the movement of thought and sustaining itself as an experiencer of its personal and private experiences.
Here, we are telling you that there is a new quality of life, free from the sense of “I” and in this full awareness of the Reality of Love, the Reality of God, the Reality of Happiness. This Reality of God, this Reality of Love, the Truth of Happiness is the Nature of God, is the Nature of this Being that we are. This becomes possible when there is an emptying of all this psychological content, of all this psychological conditioning that we carry, which has given us this illusory identity, which is the illusory identity of the “I.”
Notice that this “I” is always living within its dissatisfaction, within its set of beliefs, ideas, concepts, opinions, judgments and evaluations of what life is, who it is, who the other is. This sense of “I,” which is the ego, is loaded with envy, fear, jealousy, living in this dissatisfaction because it lacks the clear understanding that it is not the Unique Reality. When the mind becomes ready, when we learn to become aware of the movement of the “I” itself, when the mind begins to observe itself, this internal confusion, this internal disorder, begins to become clear.
When there is this Mindfulness, this Full Attention to this observation of the movement of the “I,” this ego, this sense of separation, this experiencer, loses relevance, then there is an emptying of all this psychological content. This experiencer, this thinker, this person who takes action to seek, to accomplish things, loses relevance. So, the sense of “I” disappears when there is awareness of the Truth of Self-awareness.
When there is a true approach to the Truth of Real Meditation, which is this awareness of all this internal movement, then the brain quiets down, the mind in a very natural way becomes silent and Something new, indescribable, nameless reveals itself. This new Something is beyond all name, all verbal formulation, although we also call it God, Truth, Consciousness, but it is Something indescribable, unnameable. This is the Reality of your Being, of Happiness, of Love.
